Unified Capacity Limit of Non-coherent Wideband Fading Channels
In non-coherent wideband fading channels where energy rather than spectrum is
the limiting resource, peaky and non-peaky signaling schemes have long been
considered species apart, as the first approaches asymptotically the capacity
of a wideband AWGN channel with the same average SNR, whereas the second
reaches a peak rate at some finite critical bandwidth and then falls to zero as
bandwidth grows to infinity. In this paper it is shown that this distinction is
in fact an artifact of the limited attention paid in the past to the product
between the bandwidth and the fraction of time it is in use. This fundamental
quantity, called bandwidth occupancy, measures average bandwidth usage over
time. For all signaling schemes with the same bandwidth occupancy, achievable
rates approach to the wideband AWGN capacity within the same gap as the
bandwidth occupancy approaches its critical value, and decrease to zero as the
occupancy goes to infinity. This unified analysis produces quantitative
closed-form expressions for the ideal bandwidth occupancy, recovers the
existing capacity results for (non-)peaky signaling schemes, and unveils a
trade-off between the accuracy of approximating capacity with a generalized
Taylor polynomial and the accuracy with which the optimal bandwidth occupancy
can be bounded.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Wireless

Nearest Neighbour Decoding and Pilot-Aided Channel Estimation in Stationary Gaussian Flat-Fading Channels
We study the information rates of non-coherent, stationary, Gaussian,
multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) flat-fading channels that are achievable
with nearest neighbour decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation. In
particular, we analyse the behaviour of these achievable rates in the limit as
the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tends to infinity. We demonstrate that nearest
neighbour decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation achieves the capacity
pre-log - which is defined as the limiting ratio of the capacity to the
logarithm of SNR as the SNR tends to infinity - of non-coherent multiple-input
single-output (MISO) flat-fading channels, and it achieves the best so far
known lower bound on the capacity pre-log of non-coherent MIMO flat-fading
channels.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. To be presented at the IEEE International

Capacity of Underspread Noncoherent WSSUS Fading Channels under Peak Signal Constraints
We characterize the capacity of the general class of noncoherent underspread
wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) time-frequency-selective
Rayleigh fading channels, under peak constraints in time and frequency and in
time only. Capacity upper and lower bounds are found which are explicit in the
channel's scattering function and allow to identify the capacity-maximizing
bandwidth for a given scattering function and a given peak-to-average power
ratio.Comment: To be presented at IEEE Int. Symp. Inf. Theory 2007, Nice, Franc
One-Bit Massive MIMO: Channel Estimation and High-Order Modulations
We investigate the information-theoretic throughout achievable on a fading
communication link when the receiver is equipped with one-bit analog-to-digital
converters (ADCs). The analysis is conducted for the setting where neither the
transmitter nor the receiver have a priori information on the realization of
the fading channels. This means that channel-state information needs to be
acquired at the receiver on the basis of the one-bit quantized channel outputs.
We show that least-squares (LS) channel estimation combined with joint pilot
and data processing is capacity achieving in the single-user,
single-receive-antenna case.
We also investigate the achievable uplink throughput in a massive
multiple-input multiple-output system where each element of the antenna array
at the receiver base-station feeds a one-bit ADC. We show that LS channel
estimation and maximum-ratio combining are sufficient to support both multiuser
operation and the use of high-order constellations. This holds in spite of the
severe nonlinearity introduced by the one-bit ADCs
Optimum Pilot Overhead in Wireless Communication: A Unified Treatment of Continuous and Block-Fading Channels
The optimization of the pilot overhead in single-user wireless fading
channels is investigated, and the dependence of this overhead on various system
parameters of interest (e.g., fading rate, signal-to-noise ratio) is
quantified. The achievable pilot-based spectral efficiency is expanded with
respect to the fading rate about the no-fading point, which leads to an
accurate order expansion for the pilot overhead. This expansion identifies that
the pilot overhead, as well as the spectral efficiency penalty with respect to
a reference system with genie-aided CSI (channel state information) at the
receiver, depend on the square root of the normalized Doppler frequency.
Furthermore, it is shown that the widely-used block fading model is only a
special case of more accurate continuous fading models in terms of the
achievable pilot-based spectral efficiency, and that the overhead optimization
for multiantenna systems is effectively the same as for single-antenna systems
with the normalized Doppler frequency multiplied by the number of transmit
antennas.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Trans. Wireless Communication
