Support Constrained Generator Matrices of Gabidulin Codes in Characteristic Zero
Gabidulin codes over fields of characteristic zero were recently constructed by Augot et al., whenever the Galois group of the underlying field extension is cyclic. In parallel, the interest in sparse generator matrices of Reed–Solomon and Gabidulin codes has increased lately, due to applications in distributed computations. In particular, a certain condition pertaining to the intersection of zero entries at different rows, was shown to be necessary and sufficient for the existence of the sparsest possible generator matrix of Gabidulin codes over finite fields. In this paper we complete the picture by showing that the same condition is also necessary and sufficient for Gabidulin codes over fields of characteristic zero. Our proof builds upon and extends tools from the finite-field case, combines them with a variant of the Schwartz–Zippel lemma over automorphisms, and provides a simple randomized construction algorithm whose probability of success can be arbitrarily close to one. In addition, potential applications for low-rank matrix recovery are discussed
Noncommutative Geometry and String Duality
A review of the applications of noncommutative geometry to a systematic
formulation of duality symmetries in string theory is presented. The spectral
triples associated with a lattice vertex operator algebra and the corresponding
Dirac-Ramond operators are constructed and shown to naturally incorporate
target space and discrete worldsheet dualities as isometries of the
noncommutative space. The target space duality and diffeomorphism symmetries
are shown to act as gauge transformations of the geometry. The connections with
the noncommutative torus and Matrix Theory compactifications are also
discussed.Comment: 17 pages, Latex2e, uses JHEP.cls (included); Based on talk given by

On products and powers of linear codes under componentwise multiplication
In this text we develop the formalism of products and powers of linear codes
under componentwise multiplication. As an expanded version of the author's talk
at AGCT-14, focus is put mostly on basic properties and descriptive statements
that could otherwise probably not fit in a regular research paper. On the other
hand, more advanced results and applications are only quickly mentioned with
references to the literature. We also point out a few open problems.
Our presentation alternates between two points of view, which the theory
intertwines in an essential way: that of combinatorial coding, and that of
algebraic geometry.
In appendices that can be read independently, we investigate topics in
multilinear algebra over finite fields, notably we establish a criterion for a
symmetric multilinear map to admit a symmetric algorithm, or equivalently, for
a symmetric tensor to decompose as a sum of elementary symmetric tensors.Comment: 75 pages; expanded version of a talk at AGCT-14 (Luminy), to appear

Skew and linearized Reed-Solomon codes and maximum sum rank distance codes over any division ring
Reed-Solomon codes and Gabidulin codes have maximum Hamming distance and
maximum rank distance, respectively. A general construction using skew
polynomials, called skew Reed-Solomon codes, has already been introduced in the
literature. In this work, we introduce a linearized version of such codes,
called linearized Reed-Solomon codes. We prove that they have maximum sum-rank
distance. Such distance is of interest in multishot network coding or in
singleshot multi-network coding. To prove our result, we introduce new metrics
defined by skew polynomials, which we call skew metrics, we prove that skew
Reed-Solomon codes have maximum skew distance, and then we translate this
scenario to linearized Reed-Solomon codes and the sum-rank metric. The theories
of Reed-Solomon codes and Gabidulin codes are particular cases of our theory,
and the sum-rank metric extends both the Hamming and rank metrics. We develop
our theory over any division ring (commutative or non-commutative field). We
also consider non-zero derivations, which give new maximum rank distance codes
over infinite fields not considered before

On the Geometry of Balls in the Grassmannian and List Decoding of Lifted Gabidulin Codes
The finite Grassmannian is defined as the set of all
-dimensional subspaces of the ambient space . Subsets of
the finite Grassmannian are called constant dimension codes and have recently
found an application in random network coding. In this setting codewords from
are sent through a network channel and, since errors may
occur during transmission, the received words can possible lie in
, where . In this paper, we study the balls in
with center that is not necessarily in
. We describe the balls with respect to two different
metrics, namely the subspace and the injection metric. Moreover, we use two
different techniques for describing these balls, one is the Pl\"ucker embedding
of , and the second one is a rational parametrization of
the matrix representation of the codewords.
With these results, we consider the problem of list decoding a certain family
of constant dimension codes, called lifted Gabidulin codes. We describe a way
of representing these codes by linear equations in either the matrix
representation or a subset of the Pl\"ucker coordinates. The union of these
equations and the equations which arise from the description of the ball of a
given radius in the Grassmannian describe the list of codewords with distance
less than or equal to the given radius from the received word.Comment: To be published in Designs, Codes and Cryptography (Springer
