    Sociocultural and demographic factors that influence academic performance: The pre-university case of the Universidad Polit茅cnica Estatal del Carchi

    The pre-university course established at the Universidad Polit茅cnica Estatal del Carchi (UPEC) after the disappearance of the Sistema Nacional de Nivelaci贸n y Admisi贸n (National Equalization and Admissions System, known by its Spanish acronym as the SNNA) posed new challenges for the organizational and academic structure of this university. To start with, the challenge began with the adaptation of a curricular structure according to the educational needs of the nine undergraduate degrees offered at the university. It was followed by the implementation of the program, and finally its evaluation. The present research was designed and carried out as part of the latter goal. Its main objective was to determine the sociocultural and demographic factors that influence the academic performance of the students in the course. For the purposes of this investigation, from a methodological perspective, academic performance was associated with the number of subjects passed by the student. Using multivariate dependency techniques, a logistic regression was performed, which determined the degree of incidence of sociocultural and demographics factors on academic success. After applying the model, the results indicated that the demographic factors in this case do not influence academic success, while variables such as the educational level of the student鈥檚 parents, the student鈥檚 grade on university entrance exams and work status are significant when it comes to establishing a cause and effect relationship in this case studyPeer Reviewe

    An谩lisis longitudinal del rendimiento acad茅mico en los cursos de letras en estudiantes del VI ciclo en una instituci贸n educativa privada

    El objetivo principal de la investigaci贸n era determinar la diferencia que existe en el an谩lisis longitudinal del rendimiento acad茅mico en los cursos de letras en estudiantes del VI ciclo en una instituci贸n educativa privada. El enfoque que sigui贸 la investigaci贸n era cuantitativo, tipo de investigaci贸n b谩sica, el m茅todo descriptivo comparativo, el dise帽o de investigaci贸n era no experimental longitudinal. La variable estudiada era el rendimiento acad茅mico, la poblaci贸n estaba constituida por 113 estudiantes y la muestra estaba conformada por 68 estudiantes. La recolecci贸n de datos se realiz贸 en base a la t茅cnica de observaci贸n no participante ya que la informaci贸n que se manej贸 era de los registros de notas y tambi茅n se utiliz贸 la t茅cnica de revisi贸n documentaria ya que los registros de notas estuvieron a la mano para la investigaci贸n. Para la obtenci贸n de los resultados se realiz贸 la prueba de Kruskal- Wallis donde se obtuvo un p-valor de <0,05. La conclusi贸n general mostr贸 una diferencia significativa en el rendimiento acad茅mico en los cursos de letras ya que el p-valor encontrado en todos los resultados era de <0,05 dentro de la investigaci贸n demostrando que existen diferencias significativas en el rendimiento acad茅mico de los cursos de letras
