    Achieving Scalable Capacity in Wireless Mesh Networks

    Wireless mesh networks play a critical role in enabling key networking scenarios in beyond-5G (B5G) and 6G networks, including integrated access and backhaul (IAB), multi-hop sidelinks, and V2X. However, it still poses a challenge to deliver scalable per-node throughput via mesh networking, which significantly limits the potential of large-scale deployment of wireless mesh networks. Existing research has achieved O(1)O(1) per-node throughput in a dense network, but how to achieve scalability remains an unresolved issue for an extended wireless network where the network size increases with a constant node density. This issue prevents a wireless mesh network from large-scale deployment. To this end, this paper aims to develop a theoretical approach to achieving scalable per-node throughput in wireless mesh networks. First, the key factors that limit the per-node throughput of wireless mesh networks are analyzed, through which two major ones are identified, i.e., link sharing and interference. Next, a multi-tier hierarchical architecture is proposed to overcome the link-sharing issue. The inter-tier interference under this architecture is then mitigated by utilizing orthogonal frequency allocation between adjacent tiers, while the intra-tier interference is reduced by considering two specific transmission schemes, one is MIMO spatial multiplexing with time-division, the other is MIMO beamforming. Theoretical analysis shows that the multi-tier mesh networking architecture can achieve a per-node throughput of Θ(1)\Theta(1) in both schemes, as long as certain conditions on network parameters including bandwidth, antenna numbers, and node numbers of each tier are satisfied. A case study on a realistic deployment of 10,000 nodes is then carried out, which demonstrates that a scalable throughput of Θ(1)\Theta(1) is achievable with a reasonable assumption on bandwidth and antenna numbers.Comment: ~12pages, 4 figures, submitted to IEEE TIT, part of this work has been published in IEEE MASS 202

    Communication Over a Wireless Network With Random Connections

    A network of nodes in which pairs communicate over a shared wireless medium is analyzed. We consider the maximum total aggregate traffic flow possible as given by the number of users multiplied by their data rate. The model in this paper differs substantially from the many existing approaches in that the channel connections in this network are entirely random: rather than being governed by geometry and a decay-versus-distance law, the strengths of the connections between nodes are drawn independently from a common distribution. Such a model is appropriate for environments where the first-order effect that governs the signal strength at a receiving node is a random event (such as the existence of an obstacle), rather than the distance from the transmitter. It is shown that the aggregate traffic flow as a function of the number of nodes n is a strong function of the channel distribution. In particular, for certain distributions the aggregate traffic flow is at least n/(log n)^d for some d≫0, which is significantly larger than the O(sqrt n) results obtained for many geometric models. The results provide guidelines for the connectivity that is needed for large aggregate traffic. The relation between the proposed model and existing distance-based models is shown in some cases

    Achievable Throughput in Two-Scale Wireless Networks

    We propose a new model of wireless networks which we refer to as "two-scale networks." At a local scale, characterised by nodes being within a distance r, channel strengths are drawn independently and identically from a distance-independent distribution. At a global scale, characterised by nodes being further apart from each other than a distance r, channel connections are governed by a Rayleigh distribution, with the power satisfying a distance-based decay law. Thus, at a local scale, channel strengths are determined primarily by random effects such as obstacles and scatterers whereas at the global scale channel strengths depend on distance. For such networks, we propose a hybrid communications scheme, combining elements of distance-dependent networks and random networks. For particular classes of two-scale networks with N nodes, we show that an aggregate throughput that is slightly sublinear in N, for instance, of the form N/ log^4 N is achievable. This offers a significant improvement over a throughput scaling behaviour of O(√N) that is obtained in other work

    On the Delay-Throughput Tradeoff in Distributed Wireless Networks

    This paper deals with the delay-throughput analysis of a single-hop wireless network with nn transmitter/receiver pairs. All channels are assumed to be block Rayleigh fading with shadowing, described by parameters (α,ϖ)(\alpha,\varpi), where α\alpha denotes the probability of shadowing and ϖ\varpi represents the average cross-link gains. The analysis relies on the distributed on-off power allocation strategy (i.e., links with a direct channel gain above a certain threshold transmit at full power and the rest remain silent) for the deterministic and stochastic packet arrival processes. It is also assumed that each transmitter has a buffer size of one packet and dropping occurs once a packet arrives in the buffer while the previous packet has not been served. In the first part of the paper, we define a new notion of performance in the network, called effective throughput, which captures the effect of arrival process in the network throughput, and maximize it for different cases of packet arrival process. It is proved that the effective throughput of the network asymptotically scales as lognα^\frac{\log n}{\hat{\alpha}}, with α^αϖ\hat{\alpha} \triangleq \alpha \varpi, regardless of the packet arrival process. In the second part of the paper, we present the delay characteristics of the underlying network in terms of the packet dropping probability. We derive the sufficient conditions in the asymptotic case of nn \to \infty such that the packet dropping probability tend to zero, while achieving the maximum effective throughput of the network. Finally, we study the trade-off between the effective throughput, delay, and packet dropping probability of the network for different packet arrival processes.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theory (34 pages

    Buffer Sizing for 802.11 Based Networks

    We consider the sizing of network buffers in 802.11 based networks. Wireless networks face a number of fundamental issues that do not arise in wired networks. We demonstrate that the use of fixed size buffers in 802.11 networks inevitably leads to either undesirable channel under-utilization or unnecessary high delays. We present two novel dynamic buffer sizing algorithms that achieve high throughput while maintaining low delay across a wide range of network conditions.     Random Access Game and Medium Access Control Design

    Motivated partially by a control-theoretic viewpoint, we propose a game-theoretic model, called random access game, for contention control. We characterize Nash equilibria of random access games, study their dynamics, and propose distributed algorithms (strategy evolutions) to achieve Nash equilibria. This provides a general analytical framework that is capable of modeling a large class of system-wide quality-of-service (QoS) models via the specification of per-node utility functions, in which system-wide fairness or service differentiation can be achieved in a distributed manner as long as each node executes a contention resolution algorithm that is designed to achieve the Nash equilibrium. We thus propose a novel medium access method derived from carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) according to distributed strategy update mechanism achieving the Nash equilibrium of random access game. We present a concrete medium access method that adapts to a continuous contention measure called conditional collision probability, stabilizes the network into a steady state that achieves optimal throughput with targeted fairness (or service differentiation), and can decouple contention control from handling failed transmissions. In addition to guiding medium access control design, the random access game model also provides an analytical framework to understand equilibrium and dynamic properties of different medium access protocols
