Towards quantum-based privacy and voting
The privacy of communicating participants is often of paramount importance,
but in some situations it is an essential condition. A typical example is a
fair (secret) voting. We analyze in detail communication privacy based on
quantum resources, and we propose new quantum protocols. Possible
generalizations that would lead to voting schemes are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, improved description of the protoco
Three Puzzles on Mathematics, Computation, and Games
In this lecture I will talk about three mathematical puzzles involving
mathematics and computation that have preoccupied me over the years. The first
puzzle is to understand the amazing success of the simplex algorithm for linear
programming. The second puzzle is about errors made when votes are counted
during elections. The third puzzle is: are quantum computers possible?Comment: ICM 2018 plenary lecture, Rio de Janeiro, 36 pages, 7 Figure
Continuous variable controlled quantum dialogue and secure multiparty quantum computation
A continuous variable controlled quantum dialogue scheme is proposed. The
scheme is further modified to obtain two other protocols of continuous variable
secure multiparty computation. The first one of these protocols provides a
solution of two party socialist millionaire problem, while the second protocol
provides a solution for a special type of multi-party socialist millionaire
problem which can be viewed as a protocol for multiparty quantum private
comparison. It is shown that the proposed scheme of continuous variable
controlled quantum dialogue can be performed using bipartite entanglement and
can be reduced to obtain several other two and three party cryptographic
schemes in the limiting cases. The security of the proposed scheme and its
advantage over corresponding discrete variable counterpart are also discussed.
Specifically, the ignorance of an eavesdropper in the proposed scheme is shown
to be very high compared with corresponding discrete variable scheme and thus
the present scheme is less prone to information leakage inherent with the
discrete variable quantum dialogue based schemes. It is further established that
the proposed scheme can be viewed as a continuous variable counterpart of
quantum cryptographic switch which allows a supervisor to control the
information transferred between the two legitimate parties to a continuously
varying degree.Comment: Quantum dialogue and its application in the continuous variable
scenario is studied in detai
Confidential direct communications: a quantum approach using continuous variables
We consider the problem of privacy in direct communications, showing how
quantum mechanics can be useful to guarantee a certain level of
confidentiality. In particular, we review a continuous variable approach
recently proposed by us [S. Pirandola et al., Europhys. Lett. 84, 20013
(2008)]. Here, we analyze the degree of privacy of this technique against a
broader class of attacks, which includes non-Gaussian eavesdropping.Comment: Invited paper. Extension of results presented in arXiv:0802.0656

Stabilisation of Quantum Computations by Symmetrisation
We propose a method for the stabilisation of quantum computations (including
quantum state storage). The method is based on the operation of projection into
, the symmetric subspace of the full state space of redundant
copies of the computer. We describe an efficient algorithm and quantum network
effecting --projection and discuss the stabilising effect of the
proposed method in the context of unitary errors generated by hardware
imprecision, and nonunitary errors arising from external environmental
interaction. Finally, limitations of the method are discussed.Comment: 20 pages LaTeX, 2 postscript figure
Classical light vs. nonclassical light: Characterizations and interesting applications
We briefly review the ideas that have shaped modern optics and have led to
various applications of light ranging from spectroscopy to astrophysics, and
street lights to quantum communication. The review is primarily focused on the
modern applications of classical light and nonclassical light. Specific
attention has been given to the applications of squeezed, antibunched, and
entangled states of radiation field. Applications of Fock states (especially
single photon states) in the field of quantum communication are also discussed.Comment: 32 pages, 3 figures, a review on applications of ligh
