On Model Adaptation for Sensorimotor Control of Robots
International audienceIn this expository article, we address the problem of computing adaptive models that can be used for guiding the motion of robotic systems with uncertain action-to-perception relations. The formulation of the uncalibrated sensor-based control problem is first presented, then, various methods for building adaptive sensorimotor models are derived and analysed. Higher coordination with less control - A result of information maximization in the sensorimotor loop
This work presents a novel learning method in the context of embodied
artificial intelligence and self-organization, which has as few assumptions and
restrictions as possible about the world and the underlying model. The learning
rule is derived from the principle of maximizing the predictive information in
the sensorimotor loop. It is evaluated on robot chains of varying length with
individually controlled, non-communicating segments. The comparison of the
results shows that maximizing the predictive information per wheel leads to a
higher coordinated behavior of the physically connected robots compared to a
maximization per robot. Another focus of this paper is the analysis of the
effect of the robot chain length on the overall behavior of the robots. It will
be shown that longer chains with less capable controllers outperform those of
shorter length and more complex controllers. The reason is found and discussed
in the information-geometric interpretation of the learning process
Robot pain: a speculative review of its functions
Given the scarce bibliography dealing explicitly with robot pain, this chapter has enriched its review with related research works about robot behaviours and capacities in which pain could play a role. On Neuromechanical Approaches for the Study of Biological Grasp and Manipulation
Biological and robotic grasp and manipulation are undeniably similar at the
level of mechanical task performance. However, their underlying fundamental
biological vs. engineering mechanisms are, by definition, dramatically
different and can even be antithetical. Even our approach to each is
diametrically opposite: inductive science for the study of biological systems
vs. engineering synthesis for the design and construction of robotic systems.
The past 20 years have seen several conceptual advances in both fields and the
quest to unify them. Chief among them is the reluctant recognition that their
underlying fundamental mechanisms may actually share limited common ground,
while exhibiting many fundamental differences. This recognition is particularly
liberating because it allows us to resolve and move beyond multiple paradoxes
and contradictions that arose from the initial reasonable assumption of a large
common ground. Here, we begin by introducing the perspective of neuromechanics,
which emphasizes that real-world behavior emerges from the intimate
interactions among the physical structure of the system, the mechanical
requirements of a task, the feasible neural control actions to produce it, and
the ability of the neuromuscular system to adapt through interactions with the
environment. This allows us to articulate a succinct overview of a few salient
conceptual paradoxes and contradictions regarding under-determined vs.
over-determined mechanics, under- vs. over-actuated control, prescribed vs.
emergent function, learning vs. implementation vs. adaptation, prescriptive vs.
descriptive synergies, and optimal vs. habitual performance. We conclude by
presenting open questions and suggesting directions for future research. We
hope this frank assessment of the state-of-the-art will encourage and guide
these communities to continue to interact and make progress in these important
areas
Evolutionary Robotics: a new scientific tool for studying cognition
We survey developments in Artificial Neural Networks, in Behaviour-based Robotics and Evolutionary Algorithms that set the stage for Evolutionary Robotics in the 1990s. We examine the motivations for using ER as a scientific tool for studying minimal models of cognition, with the advantage of being capable of generating integrated sensorimotor systems with minimal (or controllable) prejudices. These systems must act as a whole in close coupling with their environments which is an essential aspect of real cognition that is often either bypassed or modelled poorly in other disciplines. We demonstrate with three example studies: homeostasis under visual inversion; the origins of learning; and the ontogenetic acquisition of entrainment
