Resilient networking in wireless sensor networks

This report deals with security in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), especially in network layer. Multiple secure routing protocols have been proposed in the literature. However, they often use the cryptography to secure routing functionalities. The cryptography alone is not enough to defend against multiple attacks due to the node compromise. Therefore, we need more algorithmic solutions. In this report, we focus on the behavior of routing protocols to determine which properties make them more resilient to attacks. Our aim is to find some answers to the following questions. Are there any existing protocols, not designed initially for security, but which already contain some inherently resilient properties against attacks under which some portion of the network nodes is compromised? If yes, which specific behaviors are making these protocols more resilient? We propose in this report an overview of security strategies for WSNs in general, including existing attacks and defensive measures. In this report we focus at the network layer in particular, and an analysis of the behavior of four particular routing protocols is provided to determine their inherent resiliency to insider attacks. The protocols considered are: Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), Gradient-Based Routing (GBR), Greedy Forwarding (GF) and Random Walk Routing (RWR)

A secure method to detect wormhole attack in mobile adhoc network

According to recent advances in wireless telecommunications, the performance and use of wireless technologies has increased extremely. In this study concerned on the Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) is a collection of self-configuring mobile node without any infrastructure. There are different security flaws and attacks on the routing protocols in the MANET. One of the critical threats is the wormhole attacks, which have attracted a great deal of attention over the years. The wormhole attack can affect the performance of different routing protocols. During this attack, a malicious node captures packets from one location in the network, and “tunnels” them to another malicious node at a distant point, which replays them locally. This study presents a review of the most important solutions for counteracting wormhole attacks, as well as presents proposed method on DSR routing protocol for detecting them. The performance of the proposed method was examined through ns-2 simulations. Hence, the results show that proposed method can detect this serious attack in a Mobile Adhoc Network

In the current scenario Cognitive Radio (CR) has become one of the best available solution for spectrum shortage problem. Moreover, for secure data transmission over these networks it is mandatory to make these networks robust and less vulnerable against the various types of attacks. Through this paper we have presented a ubiquitous solution for one of the attack viz. black hole attack. Its implementation and simulation in detail with PDR and Throughput. The paper deals with different type of attacks and protocols explained well here. Further there is implemention of algorithm on different parameters to achieve the improved rates than earlier solutions. The paper also deals with question of selecting AODV as it protocol used in simulation. Many aspects of attacks, secure network environment are explained here in this paper. Finally in simulation we got improved results for the parameters taken with some modification in AODV protocol

Denial of service attacks and challenges in broadband wireless networks

Broadband wireless networks are providing internet and related services to end users. The three most important broadband wireless technologies are IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.16, and Wireless Mesh Network (WMN). Security attacks and vulnerabilities vary amongst these broadband wireless networks because of differences in topologies, network operations and physical setups. Amongst the various security risks, Denial of Service (DoS) attack is the most severe security threat, as DoS can compromise the availability and integrity of broadband wireless network. In this paper, we present DoS attack issues in broadband wireless networks, along with possible defenses and future directions
