    Extending twin support vector machine classifier for multi-category classification problems

    Ā© 2013 ā€“ IOS Press and the authors. All rights reservedTwin support vector machine classifier (TWSVM) was proposed by Jayadeva et al., which was used for binary classification problems. TWSVM not only overcomes the difficulties in handling the problem of exemplar unbalance in binary classification problems, but also it is four times faster in training a classifier than classical support vector machines. This paper proposes one-versus-all twin support vector machine classifiers (OVA-TWSVM) for multi-category classification problems by utilizing the strengths of TWSVM. OVA-TWSVM extends TWSVM to solve k-category classification problems by developing k TWSVM where in the ith TWSVM, we only solve the Quadratic Programming Problems (QPPs) for the ith class, and get the ith nonparallel hyperplane corresponding to the ith class data. OVA-TWSVM uses the well known one-versus-all (OVA) approach to construct a corresponding twin support vector machine classifier. We analyze the efficiency of the OVA-TWSVM theoretically, and perform experiments to test its efficiency on both synthetic data sets and several benchmark data sets from the UCI machine learning repository. Both the theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that OVA-TWSVM can outperform the traditional OVA-SVMs classifier.     Harnessing machine learning for fiber-induced nonlinearity mitigation in long-haul coherent optical OFDM

However, CO-OFDMā€™s high peak-to-average power ratio imposes high vulnerability to fiber-induced non-linearities. DSP-based machine learning has been considered as a promising approach for fiber non-linearity compensation without sacrificing computational complexity. In this paper, we review the existing machine learning approaches for CO-OFDM in a common framework and review the progress in this area with a focus on practical aspects and comparison with benchmark DSP solutions.Peer reviewe

    Twin deficits and the Feldstein-Horioka puzzle: a comparison of the EU member states and candidate countries

    The paperā€™s main objective is to investigate the empirical link between the fiscal balance and the current account (i.e. the twin deficits phenomenon). The paper focuses on the EU member states and candidate countries which are according to their different (e.g. historical, political, economical and geographical) characteristics divided into two major groups, i.e. old EU member states (EU15) and new EU member states and candidate countries (EU12+3) in the 1995-2008 period. Additionally, the importance of the so-called Feldstein-Horioka puzzle in the considered countries is examined in order to draw some conclusions about the regionsā€™ integration with international capital markets. The empirical results suggest that budget deficits in the EU member states and candidate countries have generally signaled relatively high level of substitutability between private and public savings, implying a relatively low correlation between fiscal and external imbalances. Thus, the empirical results in general reject the validity of the twin deficit hypothesis. Finally, the paper provides evidence of a relatively higher level of capital mobility, especially in the EU12+3 region in the second sub-period (2004-2008).twin deficits, Feldstein-Horioka puzzle, capital mobility, EU member states, candidate countries, panel data analysis

    Solution Path Algorithm for Twin Multi-class Support Vector Machine

    The twin support vector machine and its extensions have made great achievements in dealing with binary classification problems, however, which is faced with some difficulties such as model selection and solving multi-classification problems quickly. This paper is devoted to the fast regularization parameter tuning algorithm for the twin multi-class support vector machine. A new sample dataset division method is adopted and the Lagrangian multipliers are proved to be piecewise linear with respect to the regularization parameters by combining the linear equations and block matrix theory. Eight kinds of events are defined to seek for the starting event and then the solution path algorithm is designed, which greatly reduces the computational cost. In addition, only few points are combined to complete the initialization and Lagrangian multipliers are proved to be 1 as the regularization parameter tends to infinity. Simulation results based on UCI datasets show that the proposed method can achieve good classification performance with reducing the computational cost of grid search method from exponential level to the constant level
