Quarterly literature review of the remote sensing of natural resources
The Technology Application Center reviewed abstracted literature sources, and selected document data and data gathering techniques which were performed or obtained remotely from space, aircraft or groundbased stations. All of the documentation was related to remote sensing sensors or the remote sensing of the natural resources. Sensors were primarily those operating within the 10 to the minus 8 power to 1 meter wavelength band. Included are NASA Tech Briefs, ARAC Industrial Applications Reports, U.S. Navy Technical Reports, U.S. Patent reports, and other technical articles and reports
Automatic differentiation in machine learning: a survey
Derivatives, mostly in the form of gradients and Hessians, are ubiquitous in
machine learning. Automatic differentiation (AD), also called algorithmic
differentiation or simply "autodiff", is a family of techniques similar to but
more general than backpropagation for efficiently and accurately evaluating
derivatives of numeric functions expressed as computer programs. AD is a small
but established field with applications in areas including computational fluid
dynamics, atmospheric sciences, and engineering design optimization. Until very
recently, the fields of machine learning and AD have largely been unaware of
each other and, in some cases, have independently discovered each other's
results. Despite its relevance, general-purpose AD has been missing from the
machine learning toolbox, a situation slowly changing with its ongoing adoption
under the names "dynamic computational graphs" and "differentiable
programming". We survey the intersection of AD and machine learning, cover
applications where AD has direct relevance, and address the main implementation
techniques. By precisely defining the main differentiation techniques and their
interrelationships, we aim to bring clarity to the usage of the terms
"autodiff", "automatic differentiation", and "symbolic differentiation" as
these are encountered more and more in machine learning settings.Comment: 43 pages, 5 figure

Cyber Infrastructure Protection: Vol. II
View the Executive SummaryIncreased reliance on the Internet and other networked systems raise the risks of cyber attacks that could harm our nation’s cyber infrastructure. The cyber infrastructure encompasses a number of sectors including: the nation’s mass transit and other transportation systems; banking and financial systems; factories; energy systems and the electric power grid; and telecommunications, which increasingly rely on a complex array of computer networks, including the public Internet. However, many of these systems and networks were not built and designed with security in mind. Therefore, our cyber infrastructure contains many holes, risks, and vulnerabilities that may enable an attacker to cause damage or disrupt cyber infrastructure operations. Threats to cyber infrastructure safety and security come from hackers, terrorists, criminal groups, and sophisticated organized crime groups; even nation-states and foreign intelligence services conduct cyber warfare. Cyber attackers can introduce new viruses, worms, and bots capable of defeating many of our efforts. Costs to the economy from these threats are huge and increasing. Government, business, and academia must therefore work together to understand the threat and develop various modes of fighting cyber attacks, and to establish and enhance a framework to assess the vulnerability of our cyber infrastructure and provide strategic policy directions for the protection of such an infrastructure. This book addresses such questions as: How serious is the cyber threat? What technical and policy-based approaches are best suited to securing telecommunications networks and information systems infrastructure security? What role will government and the private sector play in homeland defense against cyber attacks on critical civilian infrastructure, financial, and logistical systems?
