What Constitutes 'Discrimination' in Everyday Talk? Argumentative Lines and the Social Representations of Discrimination
Most people agree that discrimination is wrong, but the boundary between 'discrimination' and 'not discrimination' is often highly contested in everyday practice. We explore the social representations of 'discrimination' as an object of study in qualitative interviews and focus groups with both minority (self-identified as BAME and/ or gay men) and majority (self-identified as white and/ or heterosexual) participants (n= 54). Our analysis suggests three repeated and pervasive argumentative lines in social representations of discrimination; (1) that there are two distinct kinds of discrimination (hard versus soft), (2) that you need to understand the intention of the actor(s), and (3) that a claim of discrimination requires strong evidence. We outline the macro Functions of these resources to argue that each was non-performative: they appeared to be tools to make claims of discrimination, but in practice they were much more effective at making claims of what was not discrimination
Optical discrimination between spatial decoherence and thermalization of a massive object
We propose an optical ring interferometer to observe environment-induced
spatial decoherence of massive objects. The object is held in a harmonic trap
and scatters light between degenerate modes of a ring cavity. The output signal
of the interferometer permits to monitor the spatial width of the object's wave
function. It shows oscillations that arise from coherences between energy
eigenstates and that reveal the difference between pure spatial decoherence and
that coinciding with energy transfer and heating. Our method is designed to
work with a wide variety of masses, ranging from the atomic scale to
nano-fabricated structures. We give a thorough discussion of its experimental

Single-trial multisensory memories affect later auditory and visual object discrimination.
Multisensory memory traces established via single-trial exposures can impact subsequent visual object recognition. This impact appears to depend on the meaningfulness of the initial multisensory pairing, implying that multisensory exposures establish distinct object representations that are accessible during later unisensory processing. Multisensory contexts may be particularly effective in influencing auditory discrimination, given the purportedly inferior recognition memory in this sensory modality. The possibility of this generalization and the equivalence of effects when memory discrimination was being performed in the visual vs. auditory modality were at the focus of this study. First, we demonstrate that visual object discrimination is affected by the context of prior multisensory encounters, replicating and extending previous findings by controlling for the probability of multisensory contexts during initial as well as repeated object presentations. Second, we provide the first evidence that single-trial multisensory memories impact subsequent auditory object discrimination. Auditory object discrimination was enhanced when initial presentations entailed semantically congruent multisensory pairs and was impaired after semantically incongruent multisensory encounters, compared to sounds that had been encountered only in a unisensory manner. Third, the impact of single-trial multisensory memories upon unisensory object discrimination was greater when the task was performed in the auditory vs. visual modality. Fourth, there was no evidence for correlation between effects of past multisensory experiences on visual and auditory processing, suggestive of largely independent object processing mechanisms between modalities. We discuss these findings in terms of the conceptual short term memory (CSTM) model and predictive coding. Our results suggest differential recruitment and modulation of conceptual memory networks according to the sensory task at hand
Stimulus Repetition and the Perception of Time: The Effects of Prior Exposure on Temporal Discrimination, Judgment, and Production
It has been suggested that repeated stimuli have shorter subjective duration than novel items, perhaps because of a reduction in the neural response to repeated presentations of the same object. Five experiments investigated the effects of repetition on time perception and found further evidence that immediate repetition reduces apparent duration, consistent with the idea that subjective duration is partly based on neural coding efficiency. In addition, the experiments found (a) no effect of repetition on the precision of temporal discrimination, (b) that the effects of repetition disappeared when there was a modest lag between presentations, (c) that, across participants, the size of the repetition effect correlated with temporal discrimination, and (d) that the effects of repetition suggested by a temporal production task were the opposite of those suggested by temporal judgments. The theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed
Discrimination of human and dog faces and inversion responses in domestic dogs (Canis familiaris)
Although domestic dogs can respond to many facial cues displayed by other dogs and humans, it remains unclear whether they can differentiate individual dogs or humans based on facial cues alone and, if so, whether they would demonstrate the face inversion effect, a behavioural hallmark commonly used in primates to differentiate face processing from object processing. In this study we first established the applicability of the Visual Paired Comparison (VPC or preferential looking) procedure for dogs using a simple object discrimination task with 2D pictures. The animals demonstrated a clear looking preference for novel objects when simultaneously presented with prior-exposed familiar objects. We then adopted this VPC procedure to assess their face discrimination and inversion responses. Dogs showed a deviation from random behaviour, indicating discrimination capability when inspecting upright dog faces, human faces and object images; but the pattern of viewing preference was dependent upon image category. They directed longer viewing time at novel (vs. familiar) human faces and objects, but not at dog faces, instead, a longer viewing time at familiar (vs. novel) dog faces was observed. No significant looking preference was detected for inverted images regardless of image category. Our results indicate that domestic dogs can use facial cues alone to differentiate individual dogs and humans, and that they exhibit a non-specific inversion response. In addition, the discrimination response by dogs of human and dog faces appears to differ with the type of face involved
Deformable Object Tracking with Gated Fusion
The tracking-by-detection framework receives growing attentions through the
integration with the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Existing
tracking-by-detection based methods, however, fail to track objects with severe
appearance variations. This is because the traditional convolutional operation
is performed on fixed grids, and thus may not be able to find the correct
response while the object is changing pose or under varying environmental
conditions. In this paper, we propose a deformable convolution layer to enrich
the target appearance representations in the tracking-by-detection framework.
We aim to capture the target appearance variations via deformable convolution,
which adaptively enhances its original features. In addition, we also propose a
gated fusion scheme to control how the variations captured by the deformable
convolution affect the original appearance. The enriched feature representation
through deformable convolution facilitates the discrimination of the CNN
classifier on the target object and background. Extensive experiments on the
standard benchmarks show that the proposed tracker performs favorably against
state-of-the-art methods
