    O(f) Bi-Approximation for Capacitated Covering with Hard Capacities

    We consider capacitated vertex cover with hard capacity constraints (VC-HC) on hypergraphs. In this problem we are given a hypergraph G = (V, E) with a maximum edge size f. Each edge is associated with a demand and each vertex is associated with a weight (cost), a capacity, and an available multiplicity. The objective is to find a minimum-weight vertex multiset such that the demands of the edges can be covered by the capacities of the vertices and the multiplicity of each vertex does not exceed its available multiplicity. In this paper we present an O(f) bi-approximation for VC-HC that gives a trade-off on the number of augmented multiplicity and the cost of the resulting cover. In particular, we show that, by augmenting the available multiplicity by a factor of k geq 2, a cover with a cost ratio of (1+ frac{1}{k - 1})(f - 1) to the optimal cover for the original instance can be obtained. This improves over a previous result, which has a cost ratio of f^2 via augmenting the available multiplicity by a factor of f

    Improved Bounds for Metric Capacitated Covering Problems

    In the Metric Capacitated Covering (MCC) problem, given a set of balls ? in a metric space P with metric d and a capacity parameter U, the goal is to find a minimum sized subset ?\u27 ? ? and an assignment of the points in P to the balls in ?\u27 such that each point is assigned to a ball that contains it and each ball is assigned with at most U points. MCC achieves an O(log |P|)-approximation using a greedy algorithm. On the other hand, it is hard to approximate within a factor of o(log |P|) even with ? < 3 factor expansion of the balls. Bandyapadhyay et al. [SoCG 2018, DCG 2019] showed that one can obtain an O(1)-approximation for the problem with 6.47 factor expansion of the balls. An open question left by their work is to reduce the gap between the lower bound 3 and the upper bound 6.47. In this current work, we show that it is possible to obtain an O(1)-approximation with only 4.24 factor expansion of the balls. We also show a similar upper bound of 5 for a more generalized version of MCC for which the best previously known bound was 9

    An approximation algorithm for a facility location problem with stochastic demands

    In this article we propose, for any ϵ>0\epsilon>0, a 2(1+ϵ)2(1+\epsilon)-approximation algorithm for a facility location problem with stochastic demands. This problem can be described as follows. There are a number of locations, where facilities may be opened and a number of demand points, where requests for items arise at random. The requests are sent to open facilities. At the open facilities, inventory is kept such that arriving requests find a zero inventory with (at most) some pre-specified probability. After constant times, the inventory is replenished to a fixed order up to level. The time interval between consecutive replenishments is called a reorder period. The problem is where to locate the facilities and how to assign the demand points to facilities at minimal cost per reorder period such that the above mentioned quality of service is insured. The incurred costs are the expected transportation costs from the demand points to the facilities, the operating costs (opening costs) of the facilities and the investment in inventory (inventory costs). \u

    Capacitated Covering Problems in Geometric Spaces

    In this article, we consider the following capacitated covering problem. We are given a set P of n points and a set B of balls from some metric space, and a positive integer U that represents the capacity of each of the balls in B. We would like to compute a subset B\u27 subseteq B of balls and assign each point in P to some ball in B\u27 that contains it, such that the number of points assigned to any ball is at most U. The objective function that we would like to minimize is the cardinality of B\u27. We consider this problem in arbitrary metric spaces as well as Euclidean spaces of constant dimension. In the metric setting, even the uncapacitated version of the problem is hard to approximate to within a logarithmic factor. In the Euclidean setting, the best known approximation guarantee in dimensions 3 and higher is logarithmic in the number of points. Thus we focus on obtaining "bi-criteria" approximations. In particular, we are allowed to expand the balls in our solution by some factor, but optimal solutions do not have that flexibility. Our main result is that allowing constant factor expansion of the input balls suffices to obtain constant approximations for this problem. In fact, in the Euclidean setting, only (1+epsilon) factor expansion is sufficient for any epsilon > 0, with the approximation factor being a polynomial in 1/epsilon. We obtain these results using a unified scheme for rounding the natural LP relaxation; this scheme may be useful for other capacitated covering problems. We also complement these bi-criteria approximations by obtaining hardness of approximation results that shed light on our understanding of these problems

    Parameterized Approximation Schemes using Graph Widths

    Combining the techniques of approximation algorithms and parameterized complexity has long been considered a promising research area, but relatively few results are currently known. In this paper we study the parameterized approximability of a number of problems which are known to be hard to solve exactly when parameterized by treewidth or clique-width. Our main contribution is to present a natural randomized rounding technique that extends well-known ideas and can be used for both of these widths. Applying this very generic technique we obtain approximation schemes for a number of problems, evading both polynomial-time inapproximability and parameterized intractability bounds

    FPT Constant-Approximations for Capacitated Clustering to Minimize the Sum of Cluster Radii

    Clustering with capacity constraints is a fundamental problem that attracted significant attention throughout the years. In this paper, we give the first FPT constant-factor approximation algorithm for the problem of clustering points in a general metric into kk clusters to minimize the sum of cluster radii, subject to non-uniform hard capacity constraints. In particular, we give a (15+ϵ)(15+\epsilon)-approximation algorithm that runs in 20(k2logk)n32^{0(k^2\log k)}\cdot n^3 time. When capacities are uniform, we obtain the following improved approximation bounds: A (4 + ϵ\epsilon)-approximation with running time 2O(klog(k/ϵ))n32^{O(k\log(k/\epsilon))}n^3, which significantly improves over the FPT 28-approximation of Inamdar and Varadarajan [ESA 2020]; a (2 + ϵ\epsilon)-approximation with running time 2O(k/ϵ2log(k/ϵ))dn32^{O(k/\epsilon^2 \cdot\log(k/\epsilon))}dn^3 and a (1+ϵ)(1+\epsilon)-approximation with running time 2O(kdlog((k/ϵ)))n32^{O(kd\log ((k/\epsilon)))}n^{3} in the Euclidean space; and a (1 + ϵ\epsilon)-approximation in the Euclidean space with running time 2O(k/ϵ2log(k/ϵ))dn32^{O(k/\epsilon^2 \cdot\log(k/\epsilon))}dn^3 if we are allowed to violate the capacities by (1 + ϵ\epsilon)-factor. We complement this result by showing that there is no (1 + ϵ\epsilon)-approximation algorithm running in time f(k)nO(1)f(k)\cdot n^{O(1)}, if any capacity violation is not allowed.Comment: Full version of a paper accepted to SoCG 202

    Tight Approximation for Partial Vertex Cover with Hard Capacities

    We consider the partial vertex cover problem with hard capacity constraints (Partial VC-HC) on hypergraphs. In this problem we are given a hypergraph G=(V,E) with a maximum edge size f and a covering requirement R. Each edge is associated with a demand, and each vertex is associated with a capacity and an (integral) available multiplicity. The objective is to compute a minimum vertex multiset such that at least R units of demand from the edges are covered by the capacities of the vertices in the multiset and the multiplicity of each vertex does not exceed its available multiplicity. In this paper we present an f-approximation for this problem, improving over a previous result of (2f+2)(1+epsilon) by Cheung et al to the tight extent possible. Our new ingredient of this work is a generalized analysis on the extreme points of the natural LP, developed from previous works, and a strengthened LP lower-bound obtained for the optimal solutions

    On Network Coding Capacity - Matroidal Networks and Network Capacity Regions

    One fundamental problem in the field of network coding is to determine the network coding capacity of networks under various network coding schemes. In this thesis, we address the problem with two approaches: matroidal networks and capacity regions. In our matroidal approach, we prove the converse of the theorem which states that, if a network is scalar-linearly solvable then it is a matroidal network associated with a representable matroid over a finite field. As a consequence, we obtain a correspondence between scalar-linearly solvable networks and representable matroids over finite fields in the framework of matroidal networks. We prove a theorem about the scalar-linear solvability of networks and field characteristics. We provide a method for generating scalar-linearly solvable networks that are potentially different from the networks that we already know are scalar-linearly solvable. In our capacity region approach, we define a multi-dimensional object, called the network capacity region, associated with networks that is analogous to the rate regions in information theory. For the network routing capacity region, we show that the region is a computable rational polytope and provide exact algorithms and approximation heuristics for computing the region. For the network linear coding capacity region, we construct a computable rational polytope, with respect to a given finite field, that inner bounds the linear coding capacity region and provide exact algorithms and approximation heuristics for computing the polytope.
