Nonlinear system identification and control using state transition algorithm
By transforming identification and control for nonlinear system into
optimization problems, a novel optimization method named state transition
algorithm (STA) is introduced to solve the problems. In the proposed STA, a
solution to a optimization problem is considered as a state, and the updating
of a solution equates to a state transition, which makes it easy to understand
and convenient to implement. First, the STA is applied to identify the optimal
parameters of the estimated system with previously known structure. With the
accurate estimated model, an off-line PID controller is then designed optimally
by using the STA as well. Experimental results have demonstrated the validity
of the methodology, and comparisons to STA with other optimization algorithms
have testified that STA is a promising alternative method for system
identification and control due to its stronger search ability, faster
convergence rate and more stable performance.Comment: 20 pages, 18 figure
State-of-the-art in aerodynamic shape optimisation methods
Aerodynamic optimisation has become an indispensable component for any aerodynamic design over the past 60 years, with applications to aircraft, cars, trains, bridges, wind turbines, internal pipe flows, and cavities, among others, and is thus relevant in many facets of technology. With advancements in computational power, automated design optimisation procedures have become more competent, however, there is an ambiguity and bias throughout the literature with regards to relative performance of optimisation architectures and employed algorithms. This paper provides a well-balanced critical review of the dominant optimisation approaches that have been integrated with aerodynamic theory for the purpose of shape optimisation. A total of 229 papers, published in more than 120 journals and conference proceedings, have been classified into 6 different optimisation algorithm approaches. The material cited includes some of the most well-established authors and publications in the field of aerodynamic optimisation. This paper aims to eliminate bias toward certain algorithms by analysing the limitations, drawbacks, and the benefits of the most utilised optimisation approaches. This review provides comprehensive but straightforward insight for non-specialists and reference detailing the current state for specialist practitioners
Optimizing Photonic Nanostructures via Multi-fidelity Gaussian Processes
We apply numerical methods in combination with finite-difference-time-domain
(FDTD) simulations to optimize transmission properties of plasmonic mirror
color filters using a multi-objective figure of merit over a five-dimensional
parameter space by utilizing novel multi-fidelity Gaussian processes approach.
We compare these results with conventional derivative-free global search
algorithms, such as (single-fidelity) Gaussian Processes optimization scheme,
and Particle Swarm Optimization---a commonly used method in nanophotonics
community, which is implemented in Lumerical commercial photonics software. We
demonstrate the performance of various numerical optimization approaches on
several pre-collected real-world datasets and show that by properly trading off
expensive information sources with cheap simulations, one can more effectively
optimize the transmission properties with a fixed budget.Comment: NIPS 2018 Workshop on Machine Learning for Molecules and Materials.

Free Search and Particle Swarm Optimisation applied to Non-constrained Test
This article presents an evaluation of Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) with variable inertia weight and Free Search (FS) with variable neighbour space applied to nonconstrained numerical test. The objectives are to assess how high convergence speed reflects on adaptation to various test problems and to identify possible balance between convergence speed and adaptation, which allows the algorithms to complete successfully the process of search on heterogeneous tasks with limited computational resources within a reasonable finite time and with acceptable for engineering purposes precision. Modification strategies of both algorithms are compared in terms of their ability for search space exploration. Five numerical tests are explored. Achieved experimental results are presented and analysed
