Channel state information (CSI) acquisition is, however, impractical in such highly mobile environments. Therefore, to address this problem, designers focus on incorporating differential designs with DSTFC for signal recovery in environments where neither the relay nodes nor destination have CSI. Traditionally, unitary matrix-based differential designs have been used to generate the differentially encoded symbols and codeword matrices. Unitary based designs are suitable for cooperative networks that utilize the amplify-and-forward protocol where the relay nodes are typically required to forego differential decoding. In considering other scenarios where relay nodes are compelled to differentially decode and re-transmit information signals, we propose a novel co-efficient vector differential distributed quasi-orthogonal space time frequency coding (DQSTFC) scheme for decode-and-forward cooperative networks. Our proposed space time frequency coding scheme relaxes the need for constant channel gain in the temporal and frequency dimensions over long symbol periods; thus, performance degradation is reduced in frequency-selective and time-selective fading environments. Simulation results illustrate the performance of our proposed co-efficient vector differential DQSTFC scheme under different channel conditions. Through pair-wise error probability analysis, we derive the full diversity design criteria for our code.Peer reviewe
Unitary Linear Dispersion Code Design and Optimisation for MIMO Communication Systems
Linear Dispersion Codes (LDCs) have recently attracted numerous research interests. Thanks to their efficient spreading of data across both the time and spatial domains, LDCs are capable of achieving a desired Diversity-Multiplexing Trade-off (DMT) in Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) broadband wireless access systems. This paper proposes a novel LDC design method, which relies on the unitary matrix theory combined with a Genetic Algorithm (GA) aided optimisation procedure. The proposed design provides a flexible framework, where new LDCs attaining higher data rates and better error resilience than a number of classic MIMO schemes can be generated. A Distributed Approach to Interference Alignment in OFDM-based Two-tiered Networks
In this contribution, we consider a two-tiered network and focus on the
coexistence between the two tiers at physical layer. We target our efforts on a
long term evolution advanced (LTE-A) orthogonal frequency division multiple
access (OFDMA) macro-cell sharing the spectrum with a randomly deployed second
tier of small-cells. In such networks, high levels of co-channel interference
between the macro and small base stations (MBS/SBS) may largely limit the
potential spectral efficiency gains provided by the frequency reuse 1. To
address this issue, we propose a novel cognitive interference alignment based
scheme to protect the macro-cell from the cross-tier interference, while
mitigating the co-tier interference in the second tier. Remarkably, only local
channel state information (CSI) and autonomous operations are required in the
second tier, resulting in a completely self-organizing approach for the SBSs.
The optimal precoder that maximizes the spectral efficiency of the link between
each SBS and its served user equipment is found by means of a distributed
one-shot strategy. Numerical findings reveal non-negligible spectral efficiency
enhancements with respect to traditional time division multiple access
approaches at any signal to noise (SNR) regime. Additionally, the proposed
technique exhibits significant robustness to channel estimation errors,
achieving remarkable results for the imperfect CSI case and yielding consistent
performance enhancements to the network.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted and to appear in IEEE Transactions on

Linear Precoders for Non-Regenerative Asymmetric Two-way Relaying in Cellular Systems
Two-way relaying (TWR) reduces the spectral-efficiency loss caused in
conventional half-duplex relaying. TWR is possible when two nodes exchange data
simultaneously through a relay. In cellular systems, data exchange between base
station (BS) and users is usually not simultaneous e.g., a user (TUE) has
uplink data to transmit during multiple access (MAC) phase, but does not have
downlink data to receive during broadcast (BC) phase. This non-simultaneous
data exchange will reduce TWR to spectrally-inefficient conventional
half-duplex relaying. With infrastructure relays, where multiple users
communicate through a relay, a new transmission protocol is proposed to recover
the spectral loss. The BC phase following the MAC phase of TUE is now used by
the relay to transmit downlink data to another user (RUE). RUE will not be able
to cancel the back-propagating interference. A structured precoder is designed
at the multi-antenna relay to cancel this interference. With multiple-input
multiple-output (MIMO) nodes, the proposed precoder also triangulates the
compound MAC and BC phase MIMO channels. The channel triangulation reduces the
weighted sum-rate optimization to power allocation problem, which is then cast
as a geometric program. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the
proposed protocol over conventional solutions.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless
