Fast, Robust, and Versatile Event Detection through HMM Belief State Gradient Measures
Event detection is a critical feature in data-driven systems as it assists
with the identification of nominal and anomalous behavior. Event detection is
increasingly relevant in robotics as robots operate with greater autonomy in
increasingly unstructured environments. In this work, we present an accurate,
robust, fast, and versatile measure for skill and anomaly identification. A
theoretical proof establishes the link between the derivative of the
log-likelihood of the HMM filtered belief state and the latest emission
probabilities. The key insight is the inverse relationship in which gradient
analysis is used for skill and anomaly identification. Our measure showed
better performance across all metrics than related state-of-the art works. The
result is broadly applicable to domains that use HMMs for event detection.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, double col, ieee conference forma
The Grid[Way] Job Template Manager, a tool for parameter sweeping
Parameter sweeping is a widely used algorithmic technique in computational
science. It is specially suited for high-throughput computing since the jobs
evaluating the parameter space are loosely coupled or independent.
A tool that integrates the modeling of a parameter study with the control of
jobs in a distributed architecture is presented. The main task is to facilitate
the creation and deletion of job templates, which are the elements describing
the jobs to be run. Extra functionality relies upon the GridWay Metascheduler,
acting as the middleware layer for job submission and control. It supports
interesting features like multi-dimensional sweeping space, wildcarding of
parameters, functional evaluation of ranges, value-skipping and job template
automatic indexation.
The use of this tool increases the reliability of the parameter sweep study
thanks to the systematic bookkeping of job templates and respective job
statuses. Furthermore, it simplifies the porting of the target application to
the grid reducing the required amount of time and effort.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure
Pending Evolution of Grammars
The classic approach to grammar manipulation is based on instant processing of grammar edits, which limits the kinds of grammar evolution scenarios that can be expressed with it. Treating transformation preconditions as guards poses limitations on concurrent changes of the same grammar, on reuse of evolution scripts, on expressing optionally executed steps, on batch processing and optimization of them, etc. We propose an alternative paradigm of evolution, where a transformation can be scheduled for later execution based on its precondition. This kind of extreme evolution can be useful for expressing scenarios that are impossible to fully automate within the classic or the negotiated transformation paradigms
Gapping as Constituent Coordination
A number of coordinate constructions in natural languages conjoin sequences which do not appear to correspond to syntactic constituents in the traditional sense. One striking instance of the phenomenon is afforded by the gapping construction of English, of which the following sentence is a simple example: (1) Harry eats beans, and Fred, potatoes Since all theories agree that coordination must in fact be an operation upon constituents, most of them have dealt with the apparent paradox presented by such constructions by supposing that such sequences as the right conjunct in the above example, Fred, potatoes, should be treated in the grammar as traditional constituents, of type S, but with pieces missing or deleted
The preliminary SOL (Sizing and Optimization Language) reference manual
The Sizing and Optimization Language, SOL, a high-level special-purpose computer language has been developed to expedite application of numerical optimization to design problems and to make the process less error-prone. This document is a reference manual for those wishing to write SOL programs. SOL is presently available for DEC VAX/VMS systems. A SOL package is available which includes the SOL compiler and runtime library routines. An overview of SOL appears in NASA TM 100565
