Code Design for Non-Coherent Detection of Frame Headers in Precoded Satellite Systems
In this paper we propose a simple method for generating short-length
rate-compatible codes over that are robust to non-coherent
detection for -PSK constellations. First, a greedy algorithm is used to
construct a family of rotationally invariant codes for a given constellation.
Then, by properly modifying such codes we obtain codes that are robust to
non-coherent detection. We briefly discuss the optimality of the constructed
codes for special cases of BPSK and QPSK constellations. Our method provides an
upper bound for the length of optimal codes with a given desired non-coherent
distance. We also derive a simple asymptotic upper bound on the frame error
rate (FER) of such codes and provide the simulation results for a selected set
of proposed codes. Finally, we briefly discuss the problem of designing binary
codes that are robust to non-coherent detection for QPSK constellation.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Concatenated Turbo/LDPC codes for deep space communications: performance and implementation
Deep space communications require error correction codes able to reach extremely low bit-error-rates, possibly with a steep waterfall region and without error floor. Several schemes have been proposed in the literature to achieve these goals. Most of them rely on the concatenation of different codes that leads to high hardware implementation complexity and poor resource sharing. This work proposes a scheme based on the concatenation of non-custom LDPC and turbo codes that achieves excellent error correction performance. Moreover, since both LDPC and turbo codes can be decoded with the BCJR algorithm, our preliminary results show that an efficient hardware architecture with high resource reuse can be designe

Results of research on the use of convolutional codes in data communications are presented. Convolutional coding fundamentals are discussed along with modulation and coding interaction. Concatenated coding systems and data compression with convolutional codes are described
A CRC usefulness assessment for adaptation layers in satellite systems
This paper assesses the real usefulness of CRCs in today's satellite network-to-link adaptation layers under the lights of enhanced error control and framing techniques, focusing on the DVB-S and DVB-S2 standards. Indeed, the outer block codes of their FEC schemes (Reed-Solomon and BCH, respectively) can provide very accurate error-detection information to the receiver in addition to their correction capabilities, at virtually no cost. This handy feature could be used to manage on a frame-by-frame basis what CRCs do locally, on the frames' contents, saving the bandwidth and processing load associated with them, and paving the way for enhanced transport of IP over DVB-S2. Mathematical and experimental results clearly show that if FEC has been properly congured for combined error correction and detection, having an uncorrected event after FEC decoding is likely to be an extremely improbable event. Under such conditions, it seems possible and attractive to optimize the way global error-control is done over satellite links by reducing the role of CRCs, or even by removing them from the overall encapsulation process
