4:1! Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) program, AlphaGo, has won Go Master Lee Sedol in a best-of-five competition held in Korean March 9−15, 2016. Seen by many as a landmark moment for AI, the outcome did not come as a surprise, considering the excellent combination of 1920 CPUs with sophisticated AI algorithms, including neural networks and Monte Carlo tree search (Gibney, 2016; Silver et al., 2016). Indeed, research on distributed computing and artificial intelligence (DCAI) has matured during the last decade and many effective applications are now deployed, performing an increasingly important role in modern computer science, including the two most hyped technologies: Internet of Things and Big Data. Indeed, it is fair to say that the application of artificial intelligence in distributed environments is becoming an essential element of high added value and economic potential

On the Reliability Assessment of Artificial Neural Networks Running on AI-Oriented MPSoCs

Nowadays, the usage of electronic devices running artificial neural networks (ANNs)-based applications is spreading in our everyday life. Due to their outstanding computational capabilities, ANNs have become appealing solutions for safety-critical systems as well. Frequently, they are considered intrinsically robust and fault tolerant for being brain-inspired and redundant computing models. However, when ANNs are deployed on resource-constrained hardware devices, single physical faults may compromise the activity of multiple neurons. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the reliability of the entire neural computing system, including both the software and the hardware components. This article systematically addresses reliability concerns for ANNs running on multiprocessor system-on-a-chips (MPSoCs). It presents a methodology to assign resilience scores to individual neurons and, based on that, schedule the workload of an ANN on the target MPSoC so that critical neurons are neatly distributed among the available processing elements. This reliability-oriented methodology exploits an integer linear programming solver to find the optimal solution. Experimental results are given for three different convolutional neural networks trained on MNIST, SVHN, and CIFAR-10. We carried out a comprehensive assessment on an open-source artificial intelligence-based RISC-V MPSoC. The results show the reliability improvements of the proposed methodology against the traditional scheduling

Simple, Efficient and Convenient Decentralized Multi-Task Learning for Neural Networks

    Get PDF
Artificial intelligence relying on machine learning is increasingly used on small, personal, network-connected devices such as smartphones and vocal assistants, and these applications will likely evolve with the development of the Internet of Things. The learning process requires a lot of data, often real users’ data, and computing power. Decentralized machine learning can help to protect users’ privacy by keeping sensitive training data on users’ devices, and has the potential to alleviate the cost born by service providers by off-loading some of the learning effort to user devices. Unfortunately, most approaches proposed so far for distributed learning with neural network are mono-task, and do not transfer easily to multi-tasks problems, for which users seek to solve related but distinct learning tasks and the few existing multi-task approaches have serious limitations. In this paper, we propose a novel learning method for neural networks that is decentralized, multitask, and keeps users’ data local. Our approach works with different learning algorithms, on various types of neural networks. We formally analyze the convergence of our method, and we evaluateits efficiency in different situations on various kind of neural networks, with different learning algorithms, thus demonstrating its benefits in terms of learning quality and convergence
