Adaptive control strategy for low voltage ride through capability enhancement of a grid-connected switched reluctance wind generator

    Get PDF
This paper presents the application of an adaptive control strategy to enhance the low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of a grid-connected switched reluctance wind generator. In this study, the switched reluctance generator (SRG) is driven by a variable-speed wind turbine and connected to the grid through an asymmetric half bridge inverter, DC-link, and DC-AC inverter system. The adaptive proportional-integral (PI) controllers are used to control the power electronic circuits. The Widrow-Hoff adaptation algorithm is used in this study. The Widrow-Hoff delta rule can be used to adapt the PI controllers' parameters. The detailed modelling and control strategies of the overall system are presented. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified under a severe symmetrical grid fault condition. The validity of the proposed system is verified by the simulation results, which are carried out using PSCAD/EMTDC

Control of variable reluctance machine (8/6) by artificiel intelligence techniques

The non-linearity of variable-Reluctance Machine (8/6) and the dependence of machine inductance on rotor position and applied current complicate the development of the control strategies of drives using variable-Reluctance Machine variable-Reluctance Machine (VRM). The classical-control algorithms for example of derived full proportional action may prove sufficient if the requirements on the accuracy and performance of systems are not too strict. In the opposite case and particularly when the controlled part is submitted to strong nonlinearity and to temporal variations, control techniques must be designed which ensure the robustness of the process with respect to the uncertainties on the parameters and their variations. These techniques include artificial-intelligence-based techniques constituted of neural networks and fuzzy logic. This technique has the ability to replace PID regulators by nonlinear ones using the human brain’s reasoning and functioning and is simulated by using MATLAB/Simulink software. Finally, by using obtained waveforms, these results will be compared

Optimal performance of the electric machine/drive system is mandatory to improve the energy consumption and reliability. To achieve this goal, mathematical models of the electric machine/drive system are necessary. Hence, this motivated the editors to instigate the Special Issue “Mathematical Approaches to Modeling, Optimally Designing, and Controlling Electric Machine”, aiming to collect novel publications that push the state-of-the art towards optimal performance for the electric machine/drive system. Seventeen papers have been published in this Special Issue. The published papers focus on several aspects of the electric machine/drive system with respect to the mathematical modelling. Novel optimization methods, control approaches, and comparative analysis for electric drive system based on various electric machines were discussed in the published papers

As one of the greatest inventions of human beings, the electric machine (EM) has realized the mutual conversion between electrical energy and mechanical energy, which has essentially led humanity into the age of electrification and greatly promoted the progress and development of human society. This paper will briefly review the development of EMs in the past two centuries, highlighting the historical milestones and investigating the driving force behind it. With the innovation of theory, the progress of materials and the breakthrough of computer science and power electronic devices, the mainstream EM types has been continuously changing since its appearance. This paper will not only summarize the basic operation principle and performance characteristics of traditional EMs, but also that of the emerging types of EMs. Meanwhile, control and drive system, as a non-negligible part of EM system, will be complementarily introduced. Finally, due to the background of global emission reduction, industrial intelligentization and transportation electrification, EM industry will usher again in a golden period of development. Accordingly, several foreseeable future developing trends will be analyzed and summarized

Two-axis torque control of BLDC motors for electric vehicle applications.

    M. Sc. Eng. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban 2014.This thesis begins with a literature review focusing on electric vehicle (EV) applications. Systems used for steering, braking and energy storage are investigated, with specific concentration on torque control in various DC and AC motors commonly used in EVs. A final solution for a low range personal transportation EV in the form of a wheelchair is proposed. The theme for this thesis is motion control, focusing on a two axis (or two wheel drive) brushless DC hub motor (BLDCHM) EV, with torque and direction control tracking a user reference. The operation principle for a BLDCHM is documented and the dynamic and electrical equations derived. Simulation results for motor response under different load and speed conditions are compared to practical measurements. Current and torque control loops are designed, implemented and tuned on a single-axis test-bed with an induction motor (IM) load coupled via a torque transducer. A Texas Instrument DSP development kit is used for the control algorithm bench testing. The final control algorithm is then duplicated and expanded in simulation to form a dynamic two axis system for an electric wheelchair. It incorporates both motor drive and regenerative capabilities. After demonstrating two axis controls for BLDCHMs, a control algorithm is designed simulated and compared to traditional systems. The final solution focuses specifically on an intuitive response to the driver input whilst maintaining direction tracking, even when there is a difference in smoothness of the individual terrains traversed by the left and right wheels. In addition the motor drives are equipped with controllers that ensure regenerative braking in order to recover as much energy as possible when the wheelchair is commanded to decelerate
