    Personnel recognition and gait classification based on multistatic micro-doppler signatures using deep convolutional neural networks

    In this letter, we propose two methods for personnel recognition and gait classification using deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) based on multistatic radar micro-Doppler signatures. Previous DCNN-based schemes have mainly focused on monostatic scenarios, whereas directional diversity offered by multistatic radar is exploited in this letter to improve classification accuracy. We first propose the voted monostatic DCNN (VMo-DCNN) method, which trains DCNNs on each receiver node separately and fuses the results by binary voting. By merging the fusion step into the network architecture, we further propose the multistatic DCNN (Mul-DCNN) method, which performs slightly better than VMo-DCNN. These methods are validated on real data measured with a 2.4-GHz multistatic radar system. Experimental results show that the Mul-DCNN achieves over 99% accuracy in armed/unarmed gait classification using only 20% training data and similar performance in two-class personnel recognition using 50% training data, which are higher than the accuracy obtained by performing DCNN on a single radar node

    Near-Surface Interface Detection for Coal Mining Applications Using Bispectral Features and GPR

    The use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) for detecting the presence of near-surface interfaces is a scenario of special interest to the underground coal mining industry. The problem is difficult to solve in practice because the radar echo from the near-surface interface is often dominated by unwanted components such as antenna crosstalk and ringing, ground-bounce effects, clutter, and severe attenuation. These nuisance components are also highly sensitive to subtle variations in ground conditions, rendering the application of standard signal pre-processing techniques such as background subtraction largely ineffective in the unsupervised case. As a solution to this detection problem, we develop a novel pattern recognition-based algorithm which utilizes a neural network to classify features derived from the bispectrum of 1D early time radar data. The binary classifier is used to decide between two key cases, namely whether an interface is within, for example, 5 cm of the surface or not. This go/no-go detection capability is highly valuable for underground coal mining operations, such as longwall mining, where the need to leave a remnant coal section is essential for geological stability. The classifier was trained and tested using real GPR data with ground truth measurements. The real data was acquired from a testbed with coal-clay, coal-shale and shale-clay interfaces, which represents a test mine site. We show that, unlike traditional second order correlation based methods such as matched filtering which can fail even in known conditions, the new method reliably allows the detection of interfaces using GPR to be applied in the near-surface region. In this work, we are not addressing the problem of depth estimation, rather confining ourselves to detecting an interface within a particular depth range

    Micro-Doppler Based Human-Robot Classification Using Ensemble and Deep Learning Approaches

    Radar sensors can be used for analyzing the induced frequency shifts due to micro-motions in both range and velocity dimensions identified as micro-Doppler (μ\boldsymbol{\mu}-D) and micro-Range (μ\boldsymbol{\mu}-R), respectively. Different moving targets will have unique μ\boldsymbol{\mu}-D and μ\boldsymbol{\mu}-R signatures that can be used for target classification. Such classification can be used in numerous fields, such as gait recognition, safety and surveillance. In this paper, a 25 GHz FMCW Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) radar is used in industrial safety for real-time human-robot identification. Due to the real-time constraint, joint Range-Doppler (R-D) maps are directly analyzed for our classification problem. Furthermore, a comparison between the conventional classical learning approaches with handcrafted extracted features, ensemble classifiers and deep learning approaches is presented. For ensemble classifiers, restructured range and velocity profiles are passed directly to ensemble trees, such as gradient boosting and random forest without feature extraction. Finally, a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) is used and raw R-D images are directly fed into the constructed network.     An Adversarial Super-Resolution Remedy for Radar Design Trade-offs

    Radar is of vital importance in many fields, such as autonomous driving, safety and surveillance applications. However, it suffers from stringent constraints on its design parametrization leading to multiple trade-offs. For example, the bandwidth in FMCW radars is inversely proportional with both the maximum unambiguous range and range resolution. In this work, we introduce a new method for circumventing radar design trade-offs. We propose the use of recent advances in computer vision, more specifically generative adversarial networks (GANs), to enhance low-resolution radar acquisitions into higher resolution counterparts while maintaining the advantages of the low-resolution parametrization.     Comparison of Classifiers for Radar Emitter Type Identification

    ARTMAP neural network classifiers are considered for the identification of radar emitter types from their waveform parameters. These classifiers can represent radar emitter type classes with one or more prototypes, perform on-line incremental learning to account for novelty encountered in the field, and process radar pulse streams at high speed, making them attractive for real-time applications such as electronic support measures (ESM). The performance of four ARTMAP variants- ARTMAP (Stage 1), ARTMAP-IC, fuzzy ARTMAP and Gaussian ARTMAP - is assessed with radar data gathered in the field. The k nearest neighbor (kNN) and radial basis function (RDF) classifiers are used for reference. Simulation results indicate that fuzzy ARTMAP and Gaussian ARTMAP achieve an average classification rate consistently higher than that of the other ARTMAP classifers and comparable to that of kNN and RBF. ART-EMAP, ARTMAP-IC and fuzzy ARTMAP require fewer training epochs than Gaussian ARTMAP and RBF, and substantially fewer prototype vectors (thus, smaller physical memory requirements and faster fielded performance) than Gaussian ARTMAP, RBF and kNN. Overall, fuzzy ART MAP performs at least as well as the other classifiers in both accuracy and computational complexity, and better than each of them in at least one of these aspects of performance.     Radar-based Feature Design and Multiclass Classification for Road User Recognition

    The classification of individual traffic participants is a complex task, especially for challenging scenarios with multiple road users or under bad weather conditions. Radar sensors provide an - with respect to well established camera systems - orthogonal way of measuring such scenes. In order to gain accurate classification results, 50 different features are extracted from the measurement data and tested on their performance. From these features a suitable subset is chosen and passed to random forest and long short-term memory (LSTM) classifiers to obtain class predictions for the radar input. Moreover, it is shown why data imbalance is an inherent problem in automotive radar classification when the dataset is not sufficiently large. To overcome this issue, classifier binarization is used among other techniques in order to better account for underrepresented classes. A new method to couple the resulting probabilities is proposed and compared to others with great success.     Buffered Reset Leads to Improved Compression in Fuzzy ARTMAP Classification of Radar Range Profiles

    Fuzzy ARTMAP has to date been applied to a variety of automatic target recognition tasks, including radar range profile classification. In simulations of this task, it has demonstrated significant compression compared to k-nearest-neighbor classifiers. During supervised learning, match tracking search allocates memory based on the degree of similarity between newly encountered and previously encountered inputs, regardless of their prior predictive success.
