From Accession to Access: A Born-Digital Materials Case Study

Between 2011 and 2013 the Getty Institutional Records and Archives made its first foray into the comprehensive ingest, arrangement, description, and delivery of unique born-digital material when it received oral history interviews generated by some of the Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. project partners. This case study touches upon the challenges and affordances inherent to this hybrid collection of audiovisual recordings, digital mixed-media files, and analog transcripts. It describes the Archives’ efforts to develop a basic processing workflow that applies the resource-management strategy commonly known as “MPLP” in a digital environment, while striving to safeguard the integrity and authenticity of the files, adhere to professional standards, and uphold fundamental archival principles. The study describes the resulting workflow and highlights a few of the inexpensive technologies that were successfully employed to automate or expedite steps in the processing of content that was transferred via easily-accessible media and consisted of current file formats

Inspiring research, inspiring scholarship: the value and benefit of digital resources for learning, teaching, research and enjoyment

This report is the product of a JISC funded project to investigate the values, benefits and impacts of digitised resources. It performs the task of synthesising information relating to the benefits of digitisation and helps to provide a compelling argument for future digitisation work.The opportunity to engage actively with British content that is educational, entertaining and deeply enlightening is here. Technology exists to drive forward a vision of intelligent environments that supply the right information to the right person at the right time. Paradoxically, what is missing is the depth of digitised content to make such technical developments more significant than mere playthings. To achieve a Digital Britain that is educated and ready to exploit these new technologies, the treasure house of British content has to be digitised much more comprehensively.For the intelligent Digital Britain we need beautiful information, authentic data, validated content and a critical mass that will drive economic impact, research innovation and social benefits

This selective bibliography covers digital curation and preservation copyright issues, digital formats (e.g., data, media, and e-journals), metadata, models and policies, national and international efforts, projects and institutional implementations, research studies, services, strategies, and digital repository concerns. Most sources have been published from 2000 through 2011; however, a limited number of key sources published prior to 2000 are also included. NDIIPP Partner Perspectives on Economic Sustainability

This article presents results from the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) Digital Preservation Sustainability Working Group survey, conducted in 2007. The Library of Congress initiated the working group to gather information about significant issues relating to the economic sustainability of activities that support digital stewardship. The group decided the most useful method to collect information was through a series of structured telephone interviews involving several open-ended questions. Eleven NDIIPP partners were invited to participate. Interviews gathered qualitative information about a variety of economic sustainability issues, including developing business cases, implementing business models, measuring costs, and developing a stable economic basis for digital preservation programs. Survey results revealed a mix of consensus and division on various issues and shed interesting light upon the sustainability of preservation programs generally. The article provides an overview of the survey and its methodology, categorizes the responses, and draws some high-level conclusions. While the survey results should be viewed within the context of NDIIPP, they may be useful for archives, libraries, and other preservation institutions as they consider economic sustainability issues.published or submitted for publicatio
