Morality and Prosocial Behavior: the Role of Awareness, Responsibility and Norms in the Norm Activation Model
This paper examines the relationships between variables included in the Norm Activation Model of prosocial behaviour (NAM). Specifically, we evaluate the strength of two commonly used interpretations of this model, namely the NAM as a mediator model and the NAM as a moderator model. Five studies focussing on a variety of prosocial intentions and behaviours provide most support for the NAM as a mediator model. Furthermore, these studies validate past research by showing that variables included in the NAM are powerful in explaining a diversity of prosocial intentions and behaviours in the social as well as in the environmental context
Numerical action reconstruction of the dynamical history of dark matter haloes in N-body simulations
We test the ability of the numerical action method (NAM) to recover the
individual orbit histories of mass tracers in an expanding universe in a region
of radius 26Mpc/h, given the masses and redshift-space coordinates at the
present epoch. The mass tracers are represented by dark matter haloes
identified in a high resolution N-body simulation of the standard LCDM
cosmology. Since previous tests of NAM at this scale have traced the underlying
distribution of dark matter particles rather than extended haloes, our study
offers an assessment of the accuracy of NAM in a scenario which more closely
approximates the complex dynamics of actual galaxy haloes. We show that NAM can
recover present-day halo distances with typical errors of less than 3 per cent,
compared to 5 per cent errors assuming Hubble flow distances. The total halo
mass and the linear bias were both found to be constained at the 50 per cent
level. The accuracy of individual orbit reconstructions was limited by the
inability of NAM, in some instances, to correctly model the positions of haloes
at early times solely on the basis of the redshifts, angular positions, and
masses of the haloes at the present epoch. Improvements in the quality of NAM
reconstructions may be possible using the present-day three-dimensional halo
velocities and distances to further constrain the dynamics. This velocity data
is expected to become available for nearby galaxies in the coming generations

Modelling the Effect of Process Parameters on the Wet Extrusion and Spheronisation of High-Loaded Nicotinamide Pellets Using a Quality by Design Approach
Open access articleThe aim of the present study was to develop an alternative process to spray granulation in order to prepare high loaded spherical nicotinamide (NAM) pellets by wet extrusion and spheronisation. Therefore, a quality by design approach was implemented to model the effect of the process parameters of the extrusion-spheronisation process on the roundness, roughness and useable yield of the obtained pellets. The obtained results were compared to spray granulated NAM particles regarding their characteristics and their release profile in vitro after the application of an ileocolon targeted shellac coating. The wet extrusion-spheronisation process was able to form highly loaded NAM pellets (80%) with a spherical shape and a high useable yield of about 90%. However, the water content range was rather narrow between 24.7% and 21.3%. The design of experiments (DoE), showed that the spheronisation conditions speed, time and load had a greater impact on the quality attributes of the pellets than the extrusion conditions screw design, screw speed and solid feed rate (hopper speed). The best results were obtained using a low load (15 g) combined with a high rotation speed (900 m/min) and a low time (3–3.5 min). In comparison to spray granulated NAM pellets, the extruded NAM pellets resulted in a higher roughness and a higher useable yield (63% vs. 92%). Finally, the coating and dissolution test showed that the extruded and spheronised pellets are also suitable for a protective coating with an ileocolonic release profile. NAM: Non-Adversarial Unsupervised Domain Mapping
Several methods were recently proposed for the task of translating images
between domains without prior knowledge in the form of correspondences. The
existing methods apply adversarial learning to ensure that the distribution of
the mapped source domain is indistinguishable from the target domain, which
suffers from known stability issues. In addition, most methods rely heavily on
`cycle' relationships between the domains, which enforce a one-to-one mapping.
In this work, we introduce an alternative method: Non-Adversarial Mapping
(NAM), which separates the task of target domain generative modeling from the
cross-domain mapping task. NAM relies on a pre-trained generative model of the
target domain, and aligns each source image with an image synthesized from the
target domain, while jointly optimizing the domain mapping function. It has
several key advantages: higher quality and resolution image translations,
simpler and more stable training and reusable target models. Extensive

Critical behavior of spin and chiral degrees of freedom in three-dimensional disordered XY models studied by the nonequilibrium aging method
The critical behavior of the gauge-glass and the XY spin-glass models in
three dimensions is studied by analyzing their nonequilibrium aging dynamics. A
new numerical method, which relies on the calculation of the two-time
correlation and integrated response functions, is used to determine both the
critical temperature and the nonequilibrium scaling exponents, both for spin
and chiral degrees of freedom. First, the ferromagnetic XY model is studied to
validate this nonequilibirum aging method (NAM), since for this nondisordered
system we can compare with known results obtained with standard equilibrium and
nonequilibrium techniques. When applied to the case of the gauge-glass model,
we show that the NAM allows us to obtain precise and reliable values of its
critical quantities, improving previous estimates. The XY spin-glass model with
both Gaussian and bimodal bond distributions, is analyzed in more detail. The
spin and the chiral two-time correlation and integrated response functions are
calculated in our simulations. The results obtained mainly for Gaussian and, to
a lesser extent, for bimodal interactions, support the existence of a
spin-chiral decoupling scenario, where the chiral order occurs at a finite
temperature while the spin degrees of freedom order at very low or zero

Modeling intraseasonal features of 2004 North American monsoon precipitation
This study examines the capabilities and limitations of the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University-National Center for Atmospheric Research Mesoscale Model (MM5) in predicting the precipitation and circulation features that accompanied the 2004 North American monsoon (NAM). When the model is reinitialized every 5 days to restrain the growth of modeling errors, its results for precipitation checked at subseasonal time scales (not for individual rainfall events) become comparable with ground- and satellite-based observations as well as with the NAM's diagnostic characteristics. The modeled monthly precipitation illustrates the evolution patterns of monsoon rainfall, although it underestimates the rainfall amount and coverage area in comparison with observations. The modeled daily precipitation shows the transition from dry to wet episodes on the monsoon onset day over the Arizona-New Mexico region, and the multiday heavy rainfall (>1 mm day-1) and dry periods after the onset. All these modeling predictions agree with observed variations. The model also accurately simulated the onset and ending dates of four major moisture surges over the Gulf of California during the 2004 monsoon season. The model reproduced the strong diurnal variability of the NAM precipitation, but did not predict the observed diurnal feature of the precipitation peak's shift from the mountains to the coast during local afternoon to late night. In general, the model is able to reproduce the major, critical patterns and dynamic variations of the NAM rainfall at intraseasonal time scales, but still includes errors in precipitation quantity, pattern, and timing. The numerical study suggests that these errors are due largely to deficiencies in the model's cumulus convective parameterization scheme, which is responsible for the model's precipitation generation. © 2007 American Meteorological Society

Fiscal decentralization and local budget deficits in Viet Nam: An empirical analysis
Since 1975, Viet Nam has gradually decentralized more fiscal responsibilities to local authorities. This study has two objectives: (i) to take stock of the current institutional framework for intergovernmental fiscal relations in Viet Nam, and (ii) to empirically assess the debt sustainability of local governments in Viet Nam. The empirical analysis uses two estimation methods: (i) fully modified ordinary least squares (OLS) to estimate the long-term correlations between co-integration equations, including vectors of co-integration variables, and stochastic regressor innovations; and (ii) fiscal reaction equations at the provincial level, based upon the Bohn (2008) model. The empirical results suggest that deficit levels are generally sustainable at the local level
