Creating R Packages: A Tutorial
This tutorial gives a practical introduction to creating R packages. We discuss how object oriented programming and S formulas can be used to give R code the usual look and feel, how to start a package from a collection of R functions, and how to test the code once the package has been created. As running example we use functions for standard linear regression analysis which are developed from scratch
Defining Original Presentism
It is surprisingly hard to define presentism. Traditional definitions
of the view, in terms of tensed existence statements, have
turned out not to to be capable of convincingly distinguishing
presentism from eternalism. Picking up on a recent proposal
by Tallant, I suggest that we need to locate the break between
eternalism and presentism on a much more fundamental level.
The problem is that presentists have tried to express their
view within a framework that is inherently eternalist. I call
that framework the Fregean nexus, as it is defined by Frege’s
atemporal understanding of predication. In particular, I show
that the tense-logical understanding of tense which is treated
as common ground in the debate rests on this very same
Fregean nexus, and is thus inadequate for a proper definition
of presentism. I contrast the Fregean nexus with what I call
the original temporal nexus, which is based on an alternative,
inherently temporal form of predication. Finally, I propose
to define presentism in terms of the original temporal nexus,
yielding original presentism. According to original presentism,
temporal propositions are distinguished from atemporal ones not
by aspects of their content, as they are on views based on the
Fregean nexus, but by their form—in particular, by their form of
predication

constructed discretely using algebraic methods. The algebraic tools are similar
to ones used in constructing topological quantum field theories.The algebraic

Semi Automated Partial Credit Grading of Programming Assignments
The grading of student programs is a time consuming process. As class sizes continue to grow, especially in entry level courses, manually grading student programs has become an even more daunting challenge. Increasing the difficulty of grading is the needs of graphical and interactive programs such as those used as part of the UNH Computer Science curriculum (and various textbooks).
There are existing tools that support the grading of introductory programming assignments (TAME and Web-CAT). There are also frameworks that can be used to test student code (JUnit, Tester, and TestNG). While these programs and frameworks are helpful, they have little or no no support for programs that use real data structures or that have interactive or graphical features. In addition, the automated tests in all these tools provide only “all or nothing” evaluation. This is a significant limitation in many circumstances. Moreover, there is little or no support for dynamic alteration of grading criteria, which means that refactoring of test classes after deployment is not easily done.
Our goal is to create a framework that can address these weaknesses. This framework needs to:
1. Support assignments that have interactive and graphical components.
2. Handle data structures in student programs such as lists, stacks, trees, and hash tables.
3. Be able to assign partial credit automatically when the instructor can predict errors in advance.
4. Provide additional answer clustering information to help graders identify and assign consistent partial credit for incorrect output that was not predefined.
Most importantly, these tools, collectively called RPM (short for Rapid Program Management), should interface effectively with our current grading support framework without requiring large amounts of rewriting or refactoring of test code
Mark Eli Kalderon, "Sympathy in Perception"
Mark Eli Kalderon's book boldly positions itself as a work in speculative metaphysics. Its point of departure is the familiar distinction between presentational and representational philosophies of perception. Kalderon notes that the latter has been more popular of late, as it is more amenable to "an account" explicating causal or counterfactual conditions on perception; but he wishes to rehabilitate the former, at least in part. One widely perceived disadvantage of presentationalism has been the way that understanding perception merely as registering the presence of things might seem to leave us vulnerable to error about the nature of what is presented. Kalderon seeks to remedy this not by dealing at length with various disjunctivist positions concerning perception which may be friendly to his position, nor by spending much time criticising opposing views, but by explicating presentationalist perception through a series of tactile metaphors, thereby providing a radically new philosophical view. He claims that we do not just 'stand before' reality, we grasp it-the metaphor survives tellingly in ordinary language-and he thereby seeks to defend a form of realism which is robust, though he admits, "pre-modern". He draws on a remarkably rich variety of thinkers to defend this position, including pre-modern, modern, and various figures from both analytic and continental philosophy-however, although there is plenty of solid scholarship here, the book is aimed at metaphysics more than the history of ideas
Representation, evolution and embodiment
As part of the ongoing attempt to fully naturalize the concept of human being--and, more specifically, to re-center it around the notion of agency--this essay discusses an approach to defining the content of representations in terms ultimately derived from their central, evolved function of providing guidance for action. This 'guidance theory' of representation is discussed in the context of, and evaluated with respect to, two other biologically inspired theories of representation: Dan Lloyd's dialectical theory of representation and Ruth Millikan's biosemantics
