The Conference proceedings' website is located at http://www.terasoft.com.tw/conf/ismir2014/Proceedings.htmlThis paper presents a user study on music information needs and behaviors of university students in Hong Kong. A mix of quantitative and qualitative methods was used. A survey was completed by 101 participants and supplemental interviews were conducted in order to investigate users’ music information related activities. We found that university students in Hong Kong listened to music frequently and mainly for the purposes of entertainment, singing and playing instruments, and stress reduction. This user group often searches for music with multiple methods, but common access points like genre and time period were rarely used. Sharing music with people in their online social networks such as Facebook and Weibo was a common activity. Furthermore, the popularity of smartphones prompted the need for streaming music and mobile music applications. We also examined users’ preferences on music services available in Hong Kong such as YouTube and KKBox, as well as the characteristics liked and disliked by the users. The results not only offer insights into non-Western users’ music behaviors but also for designing online music services for young music listeners in Hong Kong. © Xiao Hu, Jin Ha Lee, Leanne Ka Yan Wong.published_or_final_versio

This is an accepted manuscript of an article published by Emerald in Journal of Documentation on 26/05/2021, available online at: https://doi.org/10.1108/JD-02-2021-0033 The accepted version of the publication may differ from the final published version.Purpose: Despite lifestyle information needs being an important part of our daily lives, little is known about the role of common sources. Whilst magazines and television are traditional providers of lifestyle content, including for fashion, makeup, fitness, and cookery, they have been partly replaced by content-creating online influencers. Design/methodology/approach: To investigate this new resource, this article analyses comments on the videos of 223 UK female lifestyle influencers on YouTube for information about possible viewing patterns. Findings: Three quarters of comments are written during the week of the video being published, consistent with videos being consumed with an information browsing function, rather than treated as an information resource to be searched when needed. Commenting on the videos of multiple influencers occurred often, suggesting that many viewers are not loyal to a single influencer. Thus, influencers seem to primarily support active scanning rather than searching for specific information. Typical viewers of UK female lifestyle influencers can therefore expect to accumulate lifestyle ideas and knowledge for potential future use in addition to gaining timely suggestions for near future routine decision making. Practical implications: Public-facing information professionals, health professionals and counsellors may consider recommending selected videos or influencers to help with lifestyle concerns. Originality: This is the first large scale study of content-creating influencers as a lifestyle information resource

Purpose: The following research study is aimed at understanding the information practices of music fans, particularly fans of tango music and metal music in the city of Medellín. Design/methodology/approach: Based on three conceptual starting points, a social practice theory, the serious leisure perspective, and the information transfer model, a qualitative study was designed, with an exploratory and descriptive scope. In-depth interviews and observations were carried out with 18 music fans, 9 of tango music, 9 of metal music. The collected data was analized deductively using categories found on the conceptual models, and comparing it with the findings of a review of 50 previous studies found on the literature. Findings: The studies found on the literature suggest that up to this moment, music information behaviour has not been studied in a comprehensive manner, rather each activity has been viewed as isolated from others. The statements gathered from fans allow us to assert that an information practice is a coherent whole, all its activities are connected to each other and integrated with each person‟s lifestyle. Personal factors sucha as general understandings, values and world view are the ones that have greater incidence upon the practice, more so tan sociodemographic factors. A model for information practice is presented that describes all these elements. Originality/value: This study proposes a new theoretical and practical approach to the subject. The findings are an original and novel description upon which it is posible to conduct further studies
