    Explication of Extrinsic Forearm Muscles On the Classification of Thumb Position Using High-Density Surface Electromyogram

    Muscles for hand functions and movements play a major role in basic daily activities such as writing and lifting objects. The main digit of the finger in differentiating the hand gesture is the thumb and its main muscles are intrinsic muscles. However, for transradial amputees, despite the loss of access to the intrinsic muscles, any information from the extrinsic muscles would be paramount and non-negotiable in creating a perfect hand prosthesis. As such, the research is dedicated to studying the relationship between extrinsic muscles located at the human’s forearm to characterize the actual thumb attitudes. A 64-channel HD-sEMG recording device together with a thumb force measuring platform was utilized to collect the required signals from 17 participants at several thumb angle positions namely zero-degrees, thirty-degree, sixty-degrees, and ninety-degree. For each position, the participants were required to place their thumbs on top of a load cell at relaxing (no force at all) and contact (30% of their individual Maximum Voluntary Contraction or known as MVC) conditions repetitively by following a designated trajectory. Feature extraction was performed by calculating the Root Mean Square (RMS) values of the HD-sEMG data collected from each channel. Six different classifiers have been used to classify the relationship between the forearm HD-sEMG and the corresponding thumb positions. As a result, LazyIBK obtained the highest correctly classified instances with 81.05%. The finding is significant in developing a dedicated control framework for a prosthetic hand for tansradial amputees that can operate as closely as normal

    Detection of multiple innervation zones from multi-channel surface EMG recordings with low signal-to-noise ratio using graph-cut segmentation

    Knowledge of the location of muscle Innervation Zones (IZs) is important in many applications, e.g. for minimizing the quantity of injected botulinum toxin for the treatment of spasticity or for deciding on the type of episiotomy during child delivery. Surface EMG (sEMG) can be noninvasively recorded to assess physiological and morphological characteristics of contracting muscles. However, it is not often possible to record signals of high quality. Moreover, muscles could have multiple IZs, which should all be identified. We designed a fully-automatic algorithm based on the enhanced image Graph-Cut segmentation and morphological image processing methods to identify up to five IZs in 60-ms intervals of very-low to moderate quality sEMG signal detected with multi-channel electrodes (20 bipolar channels with Inter Electrode Distance (IED) of 5 mm). An anisotropic multilayered cylinder model was used to simulate 750 sEMG signals with signal-to-noise ratio ranging from -5 to 15 dB (using Gaussian noise) and in each 60-ms signal frame, 1 to 5 IZs were included. The micro- and macro- averaged performance indices were then reported for the proposed IZ detection algorithm. In the micro-averaging procedure, the number of True Positives, False Positives and False Negatives in each frame were summed up to generate cumulative measures. In the macro-averaging, on the other hand, precision and recall were calculated for each frame and their averages are used to determine F1-score. Overall, the micro (macro)-averaged sensitivity, precision and F1-score of the algorithm for IZ channel identification were 82.7% (87.5%), 92.9% (94.0%) and 87.5% (90.6%), respectively. For the correctly identified IZ locations, the average bias error was of 0.02±0.10 IED ratio. Also, the average absolute conduction velocity estimation error was 0.41±0.40 m/s for such frames. The sensitivity analysis including increasing IED and reducing interpolation coefficient for time samples was performed. Meanwhile, the effect of adding power-line interference and using other image interpolation methods on the deterioration of the performance of the proposed algorithm was investigated. The average running time of the proposed algorithm on each 60-ms sEMG frame was 25.5±8.9 (s) on an Intel dual-core 1.83 GHz CPU with 2 GB of RAM.     Statistical and Graph-Based Signal Processing: Fundamental Results and Application to Cardiac Electrophysiology

    The goal of cardiac electrophysiology is to obtain information about the mechanism, function, and performance of the electrical activities of the heart, the identification of deviation from normal pattern and the design of treatments. Offering a better insight into cardiac arrhythmias comprehension and management, signal processing can help the physician to enhance the treatment strategies, in particular in case of atrial fibrillation (AF), a very common atrial arrhythmia which is associated to significant morbidities, such as increased risk of mortality, heart failure, and thromboembolic events. Catheter ablation of AF is a therapeutic technique which uses radiofrequency energy to destroy atrial tissue involved in the arrhythmia sustenance, typically aiming at the electrical disconnection of the of the pulmonary veins triggers. However, recurrence rate is still very high, showing that the very complex and heterogeneous nature of AF still represents a challenging problem. Leveraging the tools of non-stationary and statistical signal processing, the first part of our work has a twofold focus: firstly, we compare the performance of two different ablation technologies, based on contact force sensing or remote magnetic controlled, using signal-based criteria as surrogates for lesion assessment. Furthermore, we investigate the role of ablation parameters in lesion formation using the late-gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance imaging. Secondly, we hypothesized that in human atria the frequency content of the bipolar signal is directly related to the local conduction velocity (CV), a key parameter characterizing the substrate abnormality and influencing atrial arrhythmias. Comparing the degree of spectral compression among signals recorded at different points of the endocardial surface in response to decreasing pacing rate, our experimental data demonstrate a significant correlation between CV and the corresponding spectral centroids. However, complex spatio-temporal propagation pattern characterizing AF spurred the need for new signals acquisition and processing methods. Multi-electrode catheters allow whole-chamber panoramic mapping of electrical activity but produce an amount of data which need to be preprocessed and analyzed to provide clinically relevant support to the physician. Graph signal processing has shown its potential on a variety of applications involving high-dimensional data on irregular domains and complex network. Nevertheless, though state-of-the-art graph-based methods have been successful for many tasks, so far they predominantly ignore the time-dimension of data. To address this shortcoming, in the second part of this dissertation, we put forth a Time-Vertex Signal Processing Framework, as a particular case of the multi-dimensional graph signal processing. Linking together the time-domain signal processing techniques with the tools of GSP, the Time-Vertex Signal Processing facilitates the analysis of graph structured data which also evolve in time. We motivate our framework leveraging the notion of partial differential equations on graphs. We introduce joint operators, such as time-vertex localization and we present a novel approach to significantly improve the accuracy of fast joint filtering. We also illustrate how to build time-vertex dictionaries, providing conditions for efficient invertibility and examples of constructions. The experimental results on a variety of datasets suggest that the proposed tools can bring significant benefits in various signal processing and learning tasks involving time-series on graphs. We close the gap between the two parts illustrating the application of graph and time-vertex signal processing to the challenging case of multi-channels intracardiac signals

    A three-dimensional finite-element model of gluteus medius muscle incorporating inverse-dynamics-based optimization for simulation of non-uniform muscle contraction

    Non-uniform contraction exists in many skeletal muscles and plays an important role in the function of the musculoskeletal system. Particularly in the gluteus medius (GM) muscle, its three subdivisions appear activated differently while performing various motion tasks. However, the non-uniform contractile mechanism of GM is poorly understood. In this study, a three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of GM was developed. Non-uniform contraction patterns of the three subdivisions of GM during abduction, internal and external rotation were simulated through an inverse-dynamics-based optimization approach. A set of sensitivity studies were also undertaken to evaluate the influence of parameters including the cost function of optimization and dimension of GM subdivisions on the predicted non-uniform contraction and biomechanics of the muscle. Contraction across GM was found to be highly non-uniform during various motions. The whole GM was activated during abduction, whereas only the anterior and posterior subdivisions were primarily involved in internal and external rotation, respectively. The active contractile stress in a subdivision during abduction was increased if its proportion in GM was expanded. The cost functions of minimizing the sum of active contractile stresses squared/cubed provide similar qualitative predictions of the trend of results. This approach provides the methodological basis to enable simulation of non-uniform muscle contraction using 3D musculoskeletal models

    On the Utility of Representation Learning Algorithms for Myoelectric Interfacing

    Electrical activity produced by muscles during voluntary movement is a reflection of the firing patterns of relevant motor neurons and, by extension, the latent motor intent driving the movement. Once transduced via electromyography (EMG) and converted into digital form, this activity can be processed to provide an estimate of the original motor intent and is as such a feasible basis for non-invasive efferent neural interfacing. EMG-based motor intent decoding has so far received the most attention in the field of upper-limb prosthetics, where alternative means of interfacing are scarce and the utility of better control apparent. Whereas myoelectric prostheses have been available since the 1960s, available EMG control interfaces still lag behind the mechanical capabilities of the artificial limbs they are intended to steer—a gap at least partially due to limitations in current methods for translating EMG into appropriate motion commands. As the relationship between EMG signals and concurrent effector kinematics is highly non-linear and apparently stochastic, finding ways to accurately extract and combine relevant information from across electrode sites is still an active area of inquiry.This dissertation comprises an introduction and eight papers that explore issues afflicting the status quo of myoelectric decoding and possible solutions, all related through their use of learning algorithms and deep Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. Paper I presents a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for multi-label movement decoding of high-density surface EMG (HD-sEMG) signals. Inspired by the successful use of CNNs in Paper I and the work of others, Paper II presents a method for automatic design of CNN architectures for use in myocontrol. Paper III introduces an ANN architecture with an appertaining training framework from which simultaneous and proportional control emerges. Paper Iv introduce a dataset of HD-sEMG signals for use with learning algorithms. Paper v applies a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) model to decode finger forces from intramuscular EMG. Paper vI introduces a Transformer model for myoelectric interfacing that do not need additional training data to function with previously unseen users. Paper vII compares the performance of a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network to that of classical pattern recognition algorithms. Lastly, paper vIII describes a framework for synthesizing EMG from multi-articulate gestures intended to reduce training burden

    On Improving Generalization of CNN-Based Image Classification with Delineation Maps Using the CORF Push-Pull Inhibition Operator

    Deployed image classification pipelines are typically dependent on the images captured in real-world environments. This means that images might be affected by different sources of perturbations (e.g. sensor noise in low-light environments). The main challenge arises by the fact that image quality directly impacts the reliability and consistency of classification tasks. This challenge has, hence, attracted wide interest within the computer vision communities. We propose a transformation step that attempts to enhance the generalization ability of CNN models in the presence of unseen noise in the test set. Concretely, the delineation maps of given images are determined using the CORF push-pull inhibition operator. Such an operation transforms an input image into a space that is more robust to noise before being processed by a CNN. We evaluated our approach on the Fashion MNIST data set with an AlexNet model. It turned out that the proposed CORF-augmented pipeline achieved comparable results on noise-free images to those of a conventional AlexNet classification model without CORF delineation maps, but it consistently achieved significantly superior performance on test images perturbed with different levels of Gaussian and uniform noise

    Assessing Variability of EEG and ECG/HRV Time Series Signals Using a Variety of Non-Linear Methods

    Time series signals, such as Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Electrocardiogram (ECG) represent the complex dynamic behaviours of biological systems. The analysis of these signals using variety of nonlinear methods is essential for understanding variability within EEG and ECG, which potentially could help unveiling hidden patterns related to underlying physiological mechanisms. EEG is a time varying signal, and electrodes for recording EEG at different positions on the scalp give different time varying signals. There might be correlation between these signals. It is important to know the correlation between EEG signals because it might tell whether or not brain activities from different areas are related. EEG and ECG might be related to each other because both of them are generated from one co-ordinately working body. Investigating this relationship is of interest because it may reveal information about the correlation between EEG and ECG signals. This thesis is about assessing variability of time series data, EEG and ECG, using variety of nonlinear measures. Although other research has looked into the correlation between EEGs using a limited number of electrodes and a limited number of combinations of electrode pairs, no research has investigated the correlation between EEG signals and distance between electrodes. Furthermore, no one has compared the correlation performance for participants with and without medical conditions. In my research, I have filled up these gaps by using a full range of electrodes and all possible combinations of electrode pairs analysed in Time Domain (TD). Cross-Correlation method is calculated on the processed EEG signals for different number unique electrode pairs from each datasets. In order to obtain the distance in centimetres (cm) between electrodes, a measuring tape was used. For most of our participants the head circumference range was 54-58cm, for which a medium-sized I have discovered that the correlation between EEG signals measured through electrodes is linearly dependent on the physical distance (straight-line) distance between them for datasets without medical condition, but not for datasets with medical conditions. Some research has investigated correlation between EEG and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) within limited brain areas and demonstrated the existence of correlation between EEG and HRV. But no research has indicated whether or not the correlation changes with brain area. Although Wavelet Transformations (WT) have been performed on time series data including EEG and HRV signals to extract certain features respectively by other research, so far correlation between WT signals of EEG and HRV has not been analysed. My research covers these gaps by conducting a thorough investigation of all electrodes on the human scalp in Frequency Domain (FD) as well as TD. For the reason of different sample rates of EEG and HRV, two different approaches (named as Method 1 and Method 2) are utilised to segment EEG signals and to calculate Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient for each of the EEG frequencies with each of the HRV frequencies in FD. I have demonstrated that EEG at the front area of the brain has a stronger correlation with HRV than that at the other area in a frequency domain. These findings are independent of both participants and brain hemispheres. Sample Entropy (SE) is used to predict complexity of time series data. Recent research has proposed new calculation methods for SE, aiming to improve the accuracy. To my knowledge, no one has attempted to reduce the computational time of SE calculation. I have developed a new calculation method for time series complexity which could improve computational time significantly in the context of calculating a correlation between EEG and HRV. The results have a parsimonious outcome of SE calculation by exploiting a new method of SE implementation. In addition, it is found that the electrical activity in the frontal lobe of the brain appears to be correlated with the HRV in a time domain. Time series analysis method has been utilised to study complex systems that appear ubiquitous in nature, but limited to certain dynamic systems (e.g. analysing variables affecting stock values).
