Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges
With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing
number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed
and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected.
Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime
satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency
and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base
stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks
using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services.
Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs.
Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient
maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated
electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS
sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications,
conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be
tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the
demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key
technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage,
and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an
environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to
be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and
atmosphere conditions, are also discussed
Wireless communication, identification and sensing technologies enabling integrated logistics: a study in the harbor environment
In the last decade, integrated logistics has become an important challenge in
the development of wireless communication, identification and sensing
technology, due to the growing complexity of logistics processes and the
increasing demand for adapting systems to new requirements. The advancement of
wireless technology provides a wide range of options for the maritime container
terminals. Electronic devices employed in container terminals reduce the manual
effort, facilitating timely information flow and enhancing control and quality
of service and decision made. In this paper, we examine the technology that can
be used to support integration in harbor's logistics. In the literature, most
systems have been developed to address specific needs of particular harbors,
but a systematic study is missing. The purpose is to provide an overview to the
reader about which technology of integrated logistics can be implemented and
what remains to be addressed in the future

Interoperability of wireless communication technologies in hybrid networks: Evaluation of end-to-end interoperability issues and quality of service requirements
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Hybrid Networks employing wireless communication technologies have nowadays brought closer the vision of communication âanywhere, any time with anyoneâ. Such communication technologies consist of various standards, protocols, architectures, characteristics, models, devices, modulation and coding techniques. All these different technologies naturally may share some common characteristics, but there are also many important differences. New advances in these technologies are emerging very rapidly, with the advent of new models, characteristics, protocols and architectures. This rapid evolution imposes many challenges and issues to be addressed, and of particular importance are the interoperability issues of the following wireless technologies: Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) IEEE802.11, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) IEEE 802.16, Single Channel per Carrier (SCPC), Digital Video Broadcasting of Satellite (DVB-S/DVB-S2), and Digital Video Broadcasting Return Channel through Satellite (DVB-RCS). Due to the differences amongst wireless technologies, these technologies do not generally interoperate easily with each other because of various interoperability and Quality of Service (QoS) issues.
The aim of this study is to assess and investigate end-to-end interoperability issues and QoS requirements, such as bandwidth, delays, jitter, latency, packet loss, throughput, TCP performance, UDP performance, unicast and multicast services and availability, on hybrid wireless communication networks (employing both satellite broadband and terrestrial wireless technologies).
The thesis provides an introduction to wireless communication technologies followed by a review of previous research studies on Hybrid Networks (both satellite and terrestrial wireless technologies, particularly Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DVB-RCS, and SCPC). Previous studies have discussed Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DVB-RCS, SCPC and 3G technologies and their standards as well as their properties and characteristics, such as operating frequency, bandwidth, data rate, basic configuration, coverage, power, interference, social issues, security problems, physical and MAC layer design and development issues. Although some previous studies provide valuable contributions to this area of research, they are limited to link layer characteristics, TCP performance, delay, bandwidth, capacity, data rate, and throughput. None of the studies cover all aspects of end-to-end interoperability issues and QoS requirements; such as bandwidth, delay, jitter, latency, packet loss, link performance, TCP and UDP performance, unicast and multicast performance, at end-to-end level, on Hybrid wireless networks.
Interoperability issues are discussed in detail and a comparison of the different technologies and protocols was done using appropriate testing tools, assessing various performance measures including: bandwidth, delay, jitter, latency, packet loss, throughput and availability testing. The standards, protocol suite/ models and architectures for Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DVB-RCS, SCPC, alongside with different platforms and applications, are discussed and compared. Using a robust approach, which includes a new testing methodology and a generic test plan, the testing was conducted using various realistic test scenarios on real networks, comprising variable numbers and types of nodes. The data, traces, packets, and files were captured from various live scenarios and sites. The test results were analysed in order to measure and compare the characteristics of wireless technologies, devices, protocols and applications.
The motivation of this research is to study all the end-to-end interoperability issues and Quality of Service requirements for rapidly growing Hybrid Networks in a comprehensive and systematic way.
The significance of this research is that it is based on a comprehensive and systematic investigation of issues and facts, instead of hypothetical ideas/scenarios or simulations, which informed the design of a test methodology for empirical data gathering by real network testing, suitable for the measurement of hybrid network single-link or end-to-end issues using proven test tools.
This systematic investigation of the issues encompasses an extensive series of tests measuring delay, jitter, packet loss, bandwidth, throughput, availability, performance of audio and video session, multicast and unicast performance, and stress testing. This testing covers most common test scenarios in hybrid networks and gives recommendations in achieving good end-to-end interoperability and QoS in hybrid networks.
Contributions of study include the identification of gaps in the research, a description of interoperability issues, a comparison of most common test tools, the development of a generic test plan, a new testing process and methodology, analysis and network design recommendations for end-to-end interoperability issues and QoS requirements. This covers the complete cycle of this research.
It is found that UDP is more suitable for hybrid wireless network as compared to TCP, particularly for the demanding applications considered, since TCP presents significant problems for multimedia and live traffic which requires strict QoS requirements on delay, jitter, packet loss and bandwidth. The main bottleneck for satellite communication is the delay of approximately 600 to 680 ms due to the long distance factor (and the finite speed of light) when communicating over geostationary satellites.
The delay and packet loss can be controlled using various methods, such as traffic classification, traffic prioritization, congestion control, buffer management, using delay compensator, protocol compensator, developing automatic request technique, flow scheduling, and bandwidth allocation
A review of relay network on UAVS for enhanced connectivity
One of the best evolution in technology breakthroughs is the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). This aerial system is able to perform the mission in an agile environment and can reach the hard areas to perform the tasks autonomously. UAVs can be used in post-disaster situations to estimate damages, to monitor and to respond to the victims. The Ground Control Station can also provide emergency messages and ad-hoc communication to the Mobile Users of the disaster-stricken community using this network. A wireless network can also extend its communication range using UAV as a relay. Major requirements from such networks are robustness, scalability, energy efficiency and reliability. In general, UAVs are easy to deploy, have Line of Sight options and are flexible in nature. However, their 3D mobility, energy constraints, and deployment environment introduce many challenges. This paper provides a discussion of basic UAV based multi-hop relay network architecture and analyses their benefits, applications, and tradeoffs. Key design considerations and challenges are investigated finding fundamental issues and potential research directions to exploit them. Finally, analytical tools and frameworks for performance optimizations are presented
Improving the Performance of MANET Gateway Selection Scheme for Disaster Recovery
In this paper, we propose an improved MANET gateway selection scheme suitable for disaster recovery applications. Having an infrastructure less and decentralize features, MANET is well suited to bring the network back that has been collapse after a disaster. We focus on improving throughput performance of MANET by designing a better gateway selection scheme. The key idea is to eliminate the congestion at each MANET gateway for improved performance. Simulation results show that the proposed gateway selection scheme can efficiently manage the traffic distribution at each gateway to maximize the network performance
Efficient design of WIMAX/802.16 mesh networks
Broadband wireless networks are becoming increasingly popular due to their fast and inexpensive deployment and their capabilities of providing flexible and ubiquitous Internet access. While the majority of existing broadband wireless networks are still exclusively limited to single hop access, it is the ability of these networks to forward data frames over multi-hop wireless routes which enabled them to easily extend the network coverage area. Unfortunately, achieving good multi- hop throughput has been challenging due to several factors, such as lossy wireless links caused by interference from concurrent transmissions, and intra-path interference caused by transmissions on successive hops along a single path. A wireless mesh network WMN consists of a number of stationary wireless mesh routers, forming a wireless backbone. The wireless mesh routers serve as access points (APs) for wireless mobile devices, and some of them also act as gateways to the Internet via high speed wireless links. Several technologies are currently being considered for mesh (multi-hop) networks, including, IEEE 802.11 (both single channel and multi-channel), IEEE 802.16/WiMAX, and next generation cellular networks (LTE). In this work, we focus on the IEEE 802.16. To maximize the network performance of mesh networks (e.g., throughput), it is essential to consider a cross-layer design, exploiting the dependency between protocol layers such as the routing network layer and the scheduling resource allocation MAC layer. Therefore this PhD thesis considers a cross-layer design approach for designing efficient wireless mesh networks; we first develop mathematical models (link-based and path-based) for the problem of joint routing tree construction and link scheduling in WiMAX-based mesh networks with the objective of minimizing the schedule length to satisfy a set of uplink and downlink demands. This is achieved by maximizing the number of concurrent active transmissions in the network by efficiently reusing the spectrum spatially. Second, we exploit the broadcasts nature of the wireless medium and enhance our design models by incorporating opportunistic network coding into the joint routing tree construction and link scheduling problem. Identifying coding-aware routing structures and utilizing the broadcasting feature of the wireless medium play an important role in realizing the achievable gain of network coding. Last, the uprising mobile WiMAX (802.16e amendment) has introduced more difficulties and challenges into the network design problem; thus, ensuring larger connection lifetime and better routing stability become of greater interest for the joint routing and scheduling problem. This is addressed by augmenting the previously designed models. Throughout this thesis, we assume centralized scheduling at the base station (BS) and we develop, for the joint problems, integer linear programming (ILP) models which require the enumeration of all feasible solutions to reach the optimal solution. Given their complexities, we rely on optimization decomposition methods using column generation for solving each model in an efficient way
Resource allocation in WiMAX mesh networks
ix, 77 leaves : ill. ; 29 cmThe IEEE 802.16 standard popularly known as WiMAX is at the forefront of the technological
drive. Achieving high system throughput in these networks is challenging due to
interference which limits concurrent transmissions. In this thesis, we study routing and link
scheduling inWiMAX mesh networks. We present simple joint routing and link scheduling
algorithms that have outperformed most of the existing proposals in our experiments. Our
session based routing and links scheduling produced results approximately 90% of a trivial
lower bound.
We also study the problem of quality of service (QoS) provisioning in WiMAX mesh
networks. QoS has become an attractive area of study driven by the increasing demand
for multimedia content delivered wirelessly. To accommodate the different applications,
the IEEE 802.16 standard defines four classes of service. In this dissertation, we propose a
comprehensive scheme consisting of routing, link scheduling, call admission control (CAC)
and channel assignment that considers all classes of service. Much of the work in the
literature considers each of these problems in isolation. Our routing schemes use a metric
that combines interference and traffic load to compute routes for requests while our link
scheduling ensures that the QoS requirements of admitted requests are strictly met. Results
from our simulation indicate that our routing and link scheduling schemes significantly
improve network performance when the network is congested
