Sparse Signal Processing Concepts for Efficient 5G System Design
As it becomes increasingly apparent that 4G will not be able to meet the
emerging demands of future mobile communication systems, the question what
could make up a 5G system, what are the crucial challenges and what are the key
drivers is part of intensive, ongoing discussions. Partly due to the advent of
compressive sensing, methods that can optimally exploit sparsity in signals
have received tremendous attention in recent years. In this paper we will
describe a variety of scenarios in which signal sparsity arises naturally in 5G
wireless systems. Signal sparsity and the associated rich collection of tools
and algorithms will thus be a viable source for innovation in 5G wireless
system design. We will discribe applications of this sparse signal processing
paradigm in MIMO random access, cloud radio access networks, compressive
channel-source network coding, and embedded security. We will also emphasize
important open problem that may arise in 5G system design, for which sparsity
will potentially play a key role in their solution.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in IEEE Acces
QuNetSim: A Software Framework for Quantum Networks
As quantum internet technologies develop, the need for simulation software
and education for quantum internet rises. QuNetSim aims to fill this need.
QuNetSim is a Python software framework that can be used to simulate quantum
networks up to the network layer. The goal of QuNetSim is to make it easier to
investigate and test quantum networking protocols over various quantum network
configurations and parameters. The framework incorporates many known quantum
network protocols so that users can quickly build simulations and beginners can
easily learn to implement their own quantum networking protocols.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Will SDN be part of 5G?
For many, this is no longer a valid question and the case is considered
settled with SDN/NFV (Software Defined Networking/Network Function
Virtualization) providing the inevitable innovation enablers solving many
outstanding management issues regarding 5G. However, given the monumental task
of softwarization of radio access network (RAN) while 5G is just around the
corner and some companies have started unveiling their 5G equipment already,
the concern is very realistic that we may only see some point solutions
involving SDN technology instead of a fully SDN-enabled RAN. This survey paper
identifies all important obstacles in the way and looks at the state of the art
of the relevant solutions. This survey is different from the previous surveys
on SDN-based RAN as it focuses on the salient problems and discusses solutions
proposed within and outside SDN literature. Our main focus is on fronthaul,
backward compatibility, supposedly disruptive nature of SDN deployment,
business cases and monetization of SDN related upgrades, latency of general
purpose processors (GPP), and additional security vulnerabilities,
softwarization brings along to the RAN. We have also provided a summary of the
architectural developments in SDN-based RAN landscape as not all work can be
covered under the focused issues. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on
the state of the art of SDN-based RAN and clearly points out the gaps in the
technology.Comment: 33 pages, 10 figure
Meta!Blast: A Serious Game to Explore the Complexities of Structural and Metabolic Cell Biology
Knowledge of cellular structure and function has increased dramatically with the advent of modern molecular and computational technologies. Helping students to understand cellular dynamics is a major challenge to educators. To address this challenge, we have developed the Kabala Engine, an open source engine based on OpenSG (http://www.opensg.org) and VRJuggler (http://www.vrjuggler.org). This engine is designed to enable biologists, and indeed any domain expert — chemists, artists, psychologists — to create virtual interactive worlds for teaching or research. As a proof-of-concept, we have used this engine to create Meta!Blast, a virtual plant cell containing a prototype chloroplast in which students can enter, activate the light reactions, including electron excitation, and create molecular oxygen and ATP
An experimental publish-subscribe monitoring assessment to Beyond 5G networks
Collection: Wireless Technologies for the Connectivity of the Future. The fifth generation (5G) of mobile networks is designed to accommodate different types of use cases, each of them with different and stringent requirements and key performance indicators (KPIs). To support the optimization of the network performance and validation of the KPIs, there exist the necessity of a flexible and efficient monitoring system and capable of realizing multi-site and multi-stakeholder scenarios. Nevertheless, for the evolution from 5G to 6G, the network is envisioned as a user-driven, distributed Cloud computing system where the resource pool is foreseen to integrate the participating users. In this paper, we present a distributed monitoring architecture for Beyond 5G multi-site platforms, where different stakeholders share the resource pool in a distributed environment. Taking advantage of the usage of publish-subscribe mechanisms adapted to the Edge, the developed lightweight monitoring solution can manage large amounts of real-time traffic generated by the applications located in the resource pool. We assess the performance of the implemented paradigm, revealing some interesting insights about the platform, such as the effect caused by the throughput of monitoring data in performance parameters such as the latency and packet loss, or the presence of a saturation effect due to software limitations that impacts in the performance of the system under specific conditions. In the end, the performance evaluation process has confirmed that the monitoring platform suits the requirements of the proposed scenarios, being capable of handling similar workloads in real 5G and Beyond 5G scenarios, then discussing how the architecture could be mapped to these real scenarios. This work was partly funded by the European Commission under the European Union's Horizon 2020 program-Grant Agreement Number 815074 (5G EVE project).
