VR/Urban: spread.gun - design process and challenges in developing a shared encounter for media façades
Designing novel interaction concepts for urban environments is not only a technical challenge in terms of scale, safety, portability and deployment, but also a challenge of designing for social configurations and spatial settings. To outline what it takes to create a consistent and interactive experience in urban space, we describe the concept and multidisciplinary design process of VR/Urban's media intervention tool called Spread.gun, which was created for the Media Façade Festival 2008 in Berlin. Main design aims were the anticipation of urban space, situational system configuration and embodied interaction. This case study also reflects on the specific technical, organizational and infrastructural challenges encountered when developing media façade installations
Including the most vulnerable : social funds and people with disabilities
People with disabilities face many of the challenges that other vulnerable groups face, such as lack of adequate support services in their communities, lack of resources and economic opportunities, and physical and attitudinal barriers to their participating fully in society. One of the best-established World Bank instruments for targeting poor, and vulnerable groups is social funds. The authors review the extent of current disability activities within World Bank-financed social funds, and provide recommendations, and resources for increasing support for persons with disabilities in social fund subprojects. Towards the design of a platform for abuse detection in OSNs using multimedial data analysis
Online social networks (OSNs) are becoming increasingly popular every day. The vast amount of data created by users and their actions yields interesting opportunities, both socially and economically. Unfortunately, these online communities are prone to abuse and inappropriate behaviour such as cyber bullying. For victims, this kind of behaviour can lead to depression and other severe problems. However, due to the huge amount of users and data it is impossible to manually check all content posted on the social network. We propose a pluggable architecture with reusable components, able to quickly detect harmful content. The platform uses text-, image-, audio- and video-based analysis modules to detect inappropriate content or high risk behaviour. Domain services aggregate this data and flag user profiles if necessary. Social network moderators need only check the validity of the flagged profiles. This paper reports upon key requirements of the platform, the architectural components and important challenges
Reuse potential assessment framework for gamification-based smart city pilots
The paper proposes a unified framework for assessing the re-use potential for the Smart Engagement Pilot currently being realized in the city of Ghent (Belgium). The pilot aims to stimulate the digital engagement in users (citizens) by involving them in online and offline communities, and increasing the social capital through the use of ICT (Information and Communications Technology). To engage the citizens, the pilot makes use of Gamification based entities (intelligent wireless sensors) embedded in public hardware, through which innovative games are organized in places of interest (neighbourhood, parks, schools, etc.). Once finished, this pilot will be re-used in other European cities under the context of CIP SMART IP project. Since, the success of a pilot in one city doesn't guarantee its success in the other, an objective socio-economic-organizational reuse assessment becomes critical. To do this assessment, we propose a framework, which uses a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) based scorecard to determine the roadblocks and battlefields that could deter such a transition

The research is focus on the concept of storytelling associated with product design, trying to investigate new ways of designing and a possible future scenario related to the concept of death. MY BOY BUILDS COFFINS is a gravestone made using a combination of cremation’s ashes and resin. It is composed by a series of holes in which the user can stitch a text, in order to remember the loved one. The stitching need of a particular yarn produced in Switzerland using some parts of human body. Project also provides another version which uses LED lights instead of the yarn. The LEDs - thanks to an inductive coupling - will light when It will be posed in the hole. The gravestone can be placed where you want, as if it would create a little altar staff at home. In this way, there is a real connection between the user and the dearly departed
A Social Dimension for Digital Architectural Practice
Merged with duplicate record 10026.1/1296 on 14.03.2017 by CS (TIS)This thesis proceeds from an analysis of practice and critical commentary to claim that the
opportunities presented to some architectural practices by the advent of ubiquitous digital
technology have not been properly exploited. The missed opportunities, it claims, can be
attributed largely to the retention of a model of time and spaces as discrete design
parameters, which is inappropriate in the context of the widening awareness of social
interconnectedness that digital technology has also facilitated. As a remedy, the thesis
shows that some social considerations essential to good architecture - which could have
been more fully integrated in practice and theory more than a decade ago - can now be
usefully revisited through a systematic reflection on an emerging use of web technologies
that support social navigation. The thesis argues through its text and a number of practical
projects that the increasing confidence and sophistication of interdisciplinary studies in
geography, most notably in human geography, combined with the technological
opportunities of social navigation, provide a useful model of time and space as a unified
design parameter. In so doing the thesis suggests new possibilities for architectural
practices involving social interaction.
Through a literature review of the introduction and development of digital technologies to
architectural practice, the thesis identifies the inappropriate persistence of a number of
overarching concepts informing architectural practice. In a review of the emergence and
growth of 'human geography' it elaborates on the concept of the social production of
space, which it relates to an analysis of emerging social navigation technologies. In so
doing the thesis prepares the way for an integration of socially aware architecture with the
opportunities offered by social computing.
To substantiate its claim the thesis includes a number of practical public projects that have
been specifically designed to extend and amplify certain concepts, along with a large-scale
design project and systematic analysis which is intended to illustrate the theoretical claim
and provide a model for further practical exploitation
