    Low Power Microrobotics Utilizing Biologically Inspired Energy Generation

    The Low Power Microrobotics (LPM) project is a NASA NIAC-funded multi-disciplinary research effort involving the research and advancement of low power electronics, low power mobility and their integration with state of the art microbial fuel cell for power generation. The goal of this project was to advance the capabilities of each of these systems with a 10-year future target of a near one kilogram space exploration vehicle that contains each of these systems. In order to accomplish this task, each system was investigated independently in order to establish the power requirements/limitations while considering how each system affects the other systems. This was performed through numerous trade studies and experimental work, primarily focused around the power capacity of the microbial fuel cell base-lined for this project and how its strengths and limitations affected the design of the remaining onboard systems. Finally an end-to-end system test utilized a microbial fuel cell to charge a super capacitor through an energy harvesting circuit, which was discharged to activate a robotic locomotion system

    Analog VLSI-Based Modeling of the Primate Oculomotor System

    One way to understand a neurobiological system is by building a simulacrum that replicates its behavior in real time using similar constraints. Analog very large-scale integrated (VLSI) electronic circuit technology provides such an enabling technology. We here describe a neuromorphic system that is part of a long-term effort to understand the primate oculomotor system. It requires both fast sensory processing and fast motor control to interact with the world. A one-dimensional hardware model of the primate eye has been built that simulates the physical dynamics of the biological system. It is driven by two different analog VLSI chips, one mimicking cortical visual processing for target selection and tracking and another modeling brain stem circuits that drive the eye muscles. Our oculomotor plant demonstrates both smooth pursuit movements, driven by a retinal velocity error signal, and saccadic eye movements, controlled by retinal position error, and can reproduce several behavioral, stimulation, lesion, and adaptation experiments performed on primates

    Advanced Computing and Related Applications Leveraging Brain-inspired Spiking Neural Networks

    In the rapid evolution of next-generation brain-inspired artificial intelligence and increasingly sophisticated electromagnetic environment, the most bionic characteristics and anti-interference performance of spiking neural networks show great potential in terms of computational speed, real-time information processing, and spatio-temporal information processing. Data processing. Spiking neural network is one of the cores of brain-like artificial intelligence, which realizes brain-like computing by simulating the structure and information transfer mode of biological neural networks. This paper summarizes the strengths, weaknesses and applicability of five neuronal models and analyzes the characteristics of five network topologies; then reviews the spiking neural network algorithms and summarizes the unsupervised learning algorithms based on synaptic plasticity rules and four types of supervised learning algorithms from the perspectives of unsupervised learning and supervised learning; finally focuses on the review of brain-like neuromorphic chips under research at home and abroad. This paper is intended to provide learning concepts and research orientations for the peers who are new to the research field of spiking neural networks through systematic summaries

    Neuromorphic computing using non-volatile memory

    Dense crossbar arrays of non-volatile memory (NVM) devices represent one possible path for implementing massively-parallel and highly energy-efficient neuromorphic computing systems. We first review recent advances in the application of NVM devices to three computing paradigms: spiking neural networks (SNNs), deep neural networks (DNNs), and ‘Memcomputing’. In SNNs, NVM synaptic connections are updated by a local learning rule such as spike-timing-dependent-plasticity, a computational approach directly inspired by biology. For DNNs, NVM arrays can represent matrices of synaptic weights, implementing the matrix–vector multiplication needed for algorithms such as backpropagation in an analog yet massively-parallel fashion. This approach could provide significant improvements in power and speed compared to GPU-based DNN training, for applications of commercial significance. We then survey recent research in which different types of NVM devices – including phase change memory, conductive-bridging RAM, filamentary and non-filamentary RRAM, and other NVMs – have been proposed, either as a synapse or as a neuron, for use within a neuromorphic computing application. The relevant virtues and limitations of these devices are assessed, in terms of properties such as conductance dynamic range, (non)linearity and (a)symmetry of conductance response, retention, endurance, required switching power, and device variability.11Yscopu
