Goal Set Inverse Optimal Control and Iterative Re-planning for Predicting Human Reaching Motions in Shared Workspaces
To enable safe and efficient human-robot collaboration in shared workspaces
it is important for the robot to predict how a human will move when performing
a task. While predicting human motion for tasks not known a priori is very
challenging, we argue that single-arm reaching motions for known tasks in
collaborative settings (which are especially relevant for manufacturing) are
indeed predictable. Two hypotheses underlie our approach for predicting such
motions: First, that the trajectory the human performs is optimal with respect
to an unknown cost function, and second, that human adaptation to their
partner's motion can be captured well through iterative re-planning with the
above cost function. The key to our approach is thus to learn a cost function
which "explains" the motion of the human. To do this, we gather example
trajectories from pairs of participants performing a collaborative assembly
task using motion capture. We then use Inverse Optimal Control to learn a cost
function from these trajectories. Finally, we predict reaching motions from the
human's current configuration to a task-space goal region by iteratively
re-planning a trajectory using the learned cost function. Our planning
algorithm is based on the trajectory optimizer STOMP, it plans for a 23 DoF
human kinematic model and accounts for the presence of a moving collaborator
and obstacles in the environment. Our results suggest that in most cases, our
method outperforms baseline methods when predicting motions. We also show that
our method outperforms baselines for predicting human motion when a human and a

Kinematically Redundant Octahedral Motion Platform for Virtual Reality Simulations
We propose a novel design of a parallel manipulator of Stewart Gough type for
virtual reality application of single individuals; i.e. an omni-directional
treadmill is mounted on the motion platform in order to improve VR immersion by
giving feedback to the human body. For this purpose we modify the well-known
octahedral manipulator in a way that it has one degree of kinematical
redundancy; namely an equiform reconfigurability of the base. The instantaneous
kinematics and singularities of this mechanism are studied, where especially
"unavoidable singularities" are characterized. These are poses of the motion
platform, which can only be realized by singular configurations of the

Changing Assembly Modes without Passing Parallel Singularities in Non-Cuspidal 3-R\underline{P}R Planar Parallel Robots
This paper demonstrates that any general 3-DOF three-legged planar parallel
robot with extensible legs can change assembly modes without passing through
parallel singularities (configurations where the mobile platform loses its
stiffness). While the results are purely theoretical, this paper questions the

Data-Driven Approach to Simulating Realistic Human Joint Constraints
Modeling realistic human joint limits is important for applications involving
physical human-robot interaction. However, setting appropriate human joint
limits is challenging because it is pose-dependent: the range of joint motion
varies depending on the positions of other bones. The paper introduces a new
technique to accurately simulate human joint limits in physics simulation. We
propose to learn an implicit equation to represent the boundary of valid human
joint configurations from real human data. The function in the implicit
equation is represented by a fully connected neural network whose gradients can
be efficiently computed via back-propagation. Using gradients, we can
efficiently enforce realistic human joint limits through constraint forces in a

Bipedal Hopping: Reduced-order Model Embedding via Optimization-based Control
This paper presents the design and validation of controlling hopping on the
3D bipedal robot Cassie. A spring-mass model is identified from the kinematics
and compliance of the robot. The spring stiffness and damping are encapsulated
by the leg length, thus actuating the leg length can create and control hopping
behaviors. Trajectory optimization via direct collocation is performed on the
spring-mass model to plan jumping and landing motions. The leg length
trajectories are utilized as desired outputs to synthesize a control Lyapunov
function based quadratic program (CLF-QP). Centroidal angular momentum, taking
as an addition output in the CLF-QP, is also stabilized in the jumping phase to
prevent whole body rotation in the underactuated flight phase. The solution to
the CLF-QP is a nonlinear feedback control law that achieves dynamic jumping
behaviors on bipedal robots with compliance. The framework presented in this
