Characterization of ISP Traffic: Trends, User Habits, and Access Technology Impact
In the recent years, the research community has increased its focus on network monitoring which is seen as a key tool to understand the Internet and the Internet users. Several studies have presented a deep characterization of a particular application, or a particular network, considering the point of view of either the ISP, or the Internet user. In this paper, we take a different perspective. We focus on three European countries where we have been collecting traffic for more than a year and a half through 5 vantage points with different access technologies. This humongous amount of information allows us not only to provide precise, multiple, and quantitative measurements of "What the user do with the Internet" in each country but also to identify common/uncommon patterns and habits across different countries and nations. Considering different time scales, we start presenting the trend of application popularity; then we focus our attention to a one-month long period, and further drill into a typical daily characterization of users activity. Results depict an evolving scenario due to the consolidation of new services as Video Streaming and File Hosting and to the adoption of new P2P technologies. Classification of changes in API evolution
Applications typically communicate with each other, accessing and exposing data and features by using Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Even though API consumers expect APIs to be steady and well established, APIs are prone to continuous changes, experiencing different evolutive phases through their lifecycle. These changes are of different types, caused by different needs and are affecting consumers in different ways. In this paper, we identify and classify the changes that often happen to APIs, and investigate how all these changes are reflected in the documentation, release notes, issue tracker and API usage logs. The analysis of each step of a change, from its implementation to the impact that it has on API consumers, will help us to have a bigger picture of API evolution. Thus, we review the current state of the art in API evolution and, as a result, we define a classification framework considering both the changes that may occur to APIs and the reasons behind them. Profiling Users by Modeling Web Transactions
Users of electronic devices, e.g., laptop, smartphone, etc. have
characteristic behaviors while surfing the Web. Profiling this behavior can
help identify the person using a given device. In this paper, we introduce a
technique to profile users based on their web transactions. We compute several
features extracted from a sequence of web transactions and use them with
one-class classification techniques to profile a user. We assess the efficacy
and speed of our method at differentiating 25 users on a dataset representing 6

Data mining technology for the evaluation of web-based teaching and learning systems
Instructional design for Web-based teaching and learning environments causes problems for two reasons. Firstly, virtual forms of teaching and learning result in little or no direct contact between instructor and learner, making the evaluation of course effectiveness difficult. Secondly, the Web as a relatively new teaching and learning medium still requires more research into learning processes with this technology. ATTACK2VEC: Leveraging Temporal Word Embeddings to Understand the Evolution of Cyberattacks
Despite the fact that cyberattacks are constantly growing in complexity, the
research community still lacks effective tools to easily monitor and understand
them. In particular, there is a need for techniques that are able to not only
track how prominently certain malicious actions, such as the exploitation of
specific vulnerabilities, are exploited in the wild, but also (and more
importantly) how these malicious actions factor in as attack steps in more
complex cyberattacks. In this paper we present ATTACK2VEC, a system that uses
temporal word embeddings to model how attack steps are exploited in the wild,
and track how they evolve. We test ATTACK2VEC on a dataset of billions of
security events collected from the customers of a commercial Intrusion
Prevention System over a period of two years, and show that our approach is
effective in monitoring the emergence of new attack strategies in the wild and
in flagging which attack steps are often used together by attackers (e.g.,
vulnerabilities that are frequently exploited together). ATTACK2VEC provides a
useful tool for researchers and practitioners to better understand cyberattacks
and their evolution, and use this knowledge to improve situational awareness
and develop proactive defenses
