    Business Process Retrieval Based on Behavioral Semantics

    This paper develops a framework for retrieving business processes considering search requirements based on behavioral semantics properties; it presents a framework called "BeMantics" for retrieving business processes based on structural, linguistics, and behavioral semantics properties. The relevance of the framework is evaluated retrieving business processes from a repository, and collecting a set of relevant business processes manually issued by human judges. The "BeMantics" framework scored high precision values (0.717) but low recall values (0.558), which implies that even when the framework avoided false negatives, it prone to false positives. The highest pre- cision value was scored in the linguistic criterion showing that using semantic inference in the tasks comparison allowed to reduce around 23.6 % the number of false positives. Using semantic inference to compare tasks of business processes can improve the precision; but if the ontologies are from narrow and specific domains, they limit the semantic expressiveness obtained with ontologies from more general domains. Regarding the perform- ance, it can be improved by using a filter phase which indexes business processes taking into account behavioral semantics propertie

    Compositional workflow modeling with priority constraints

    Priority is an important concept in Business Process Management (BPM), useful in the context of workflow patterns such as, e.g., cancelable and compensable tasks within business transactions. Unfortunately, the presence of priority in workflows makes them difficult to be analyzed formally by automated validation and verification tools. In the past, we demonstrated that the Reo coordination language can be successfully used for modeling, automatic validation and model checking of process models. In this paper, we propose a constraint-based approach to formalize priority in Reo. We introduce special channels to initiate, propagate, and block priority flows, define their semantics as constraints, and model priority propagation as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). The semantic extension we propose in this paper enables workflow analysis in presence of priority constraints

    A business process is a complex web service with functions provided by different web services, which are already existing in web and are dynamically integrated for granting a more complex business task. For this reason, business processes have become more and more diffuse in B2B and B2C domains, so that the importance of their activities asks for a high-level of reliability. Methods and tools for supporting automatic system verification and validation could be useful. Among the techniques of automatic verification, we choose Model Checking method, because we applied it efficiently for verification of a single web service and in this paper we extend the area of application also in business processes. Descriptions of the behavior of a business process are coded using a standard language, BPEL4WS, that has broadly spread because it is able to describe a business process as both an executable process and an abstract process. Therefore, we model a BPEL description of a generic business process with a formal model and we formalize correctness properties about the reliability of the business process design. Also, we build a framework that performs automatic verification of formal models of business processes through NuSMV model checker.
