Sequence Modelling For Analysing Student Interaction with Educational Systems
The analysis of log data generated by online educational systems is an
important task for improving the systems, and furthering our knowledge of how
students learn. This paper uses previously unseen log data from Edulab, the
largest provider of digital learning for mathematics in Denmark, to analyse the
sessions of its users, where 1.08 million student sessions are extracted from a
subset of their data. We propose to model students as a distribution of
different underlying student behaviours, where the sequence of actions from
each session belongs to an underlying student behaviour. We model student
behaviour as Markov chains, such that a student is modelled as a distribution
of Markov chains, which are estimated using a modified k-means clustering
algorithm. The resulting Markov chains are readily interpretable, and in a
qualitative analysis around 125,000 student sessions are identified as
exhibiting unproductive student behaviour. Based on our results this student
representation is promising, especially for educational systems offering many
different learning usages, and offers an alternative to common approaches like
modelling student behaviour as a single Markov chain often done in the

Role-Playing Game and Learning for Young People About Sustainable Development Stakes: An Experiment in Transferring and Adapting Interdisciplinary Scientific Knowledge
The study refers to the interactions between socio-economic and natural dynamics in an island biosphere reserve by using companion modelling. This approach provides scientific results and involves interdisciplinarity. In the second phase of the study, we transferred knowledge by adapting the main research output, a role-playing game, to young people. Our goal was to introduce interactions between social and ecological systems, coastal dynamics and integrated management. Adapting the game required close collaboration between the scientists and educators in order to transform both its substance and form and to run it with an easy-to-handle ergonomic platform.Children Education, Multi-Agent Environment, Role-Playing Game
Using the Internet to improve university education: Problem-oriented web-based learning and the MUNICS environment
Up to this point, university education has largely remained unaffected by the developments of novel approaches to web-based learning. The paper presents a principled approach to the design of problem-oriented, web-based learning at the university level. The principles include providing authentic contexts with multimedia, supporting collaborative knowledge construction, making thinking visible with dynamic visualisation, quick access to content resources via Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), and flexible support by tele-tutoring. These principles are used in the Munich Net-based Learning In Computer Science (MUNICS) learning environment, which is designed to support students of computer science to apply their factual knowledge from the lectures to complex real-world problems. For example, students can model the knowledge management in an educational organisation with a graphical simulation tool. Some more general findings from a formative evaluation study with the MUNICS prototype are reported and discussed. A novel algorithm for dynamic student profile adaptation based on learning styles

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.E-learning recommendation systems are used to enhance student performance and knowledge by providing tailor- made services based on the students’ preferences and learning styles, which are typically stored in student profiles. For such systems to remain effective, the profiles need to be able to adapt and reflect the students’ changing behaviour. In this paper, we introduce new algorithms that are designed to track student learning behaviour patterns, capture their learning styles, and maintain dynamic student profiles within a recommendation system (RS). This paper also proposes a new method to extract features that characterise student behaviour to identify students’ learning styles with respect to the Felder-Silverman learning style model (FSLSM). In order to test the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, we present a series of experiments that use a dataset of real students to demonstrate how our proposed algorithm can effectively model a dynamic student profile and adapt to different student learning behaviour. The results revealed that the students could effectively increase their learning efficiency and quality for the courses when the learning styles are identified, and proper recommendations are made by using our method

The various platform modules can analyze an organization’s system, identify the most critical threats, and tailor a training program to its personnel needs.
