An Applied Electromagnetics Course with a Conceiving-Designing-Implementing-Operating Approach in Engineering Education
This paper describes and discusses the implementation of a project-based undergraduate course on applied electromagnetics in electronics engineering with a conceiving-designing-implementing-operating (CDIO) approach involving active project-based learning (PBL). The course, which requires a combination of mathematical and physics concepts for its completion, allows students to understand the principles of electromagnetic transmission theory in wireless communication systems. This paper presents the course proposal, its project description, and results hinting at the relationship with the CDIO process. The proposed projects allow students to engage in core concepts such as complex vectors, Maxwell’s equations, boundary conditions, Poynting\u27s theorem, uniform plane waves, reflection and transmission of waves, waveguides, cavity resonators, and computer-assisted design. The proposed methodology results suggest that students lowered their perception of the difficulty of the course, and most students recognized a better learning process of the core concepts for this course. In addition, students’ final course grades showed an average improvement of approximately 6% compared with the final grades of other groups with different methodologies
Holographic MIMO Communications: Theoretical Foundations, Enabling Technologies, and Future Directions
Future wireless systems are envisioned to create an endogenously
holography-capable, intelligent, and programmable radio propagation
environment, that will offer unprecedented capabilities for high spectral and
energy efficiency, low latency, and massive connectivity. A potential and
promising technology for supporting the expected extreme requirements of the
sixth-generation (6G) communication systems is the concept of the holographic
multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO), which will actualize holographic radios
with reasonable power consumption and fabrication cost. The HMIMO is
facilitated by ultra-thin, extremely large, and nearly continuous surfaces that
incorporate reconfigurable and sub-wavelength-spaced antennas and/or
metamaterials. Such surfaces comprising dense electromagnetic (EM) excited
elements are capable of recording and manipulating impinging fields with utmost
flexibility and precision, as well as with reduced cost and power consumption,
thereby shaping arbitrary-intended EM waves with high energy efficiency. The
powerful EM processing capability of HMIMO opens up the possibility of wireless
communications of holographic imaging level, paving the way for signal
processing techniques realized in the EM-domain, possibly in conjunction with
their digital-domain counterparts. However, in spite of the significant
potential, the studies on HMIMO communications are still at an initial stage,
its fundamental limits remain to be unveiled, and a certain number of critical
technical challenges need to be addressed. In this survey, we present a
comprehensive overview of the latest advances in the HMIMO communications
paradigm, with a special focus on their physical aspects, their theoretical
foundations, as well as the enabling technologies for HMIMO systems. We also

The use of microcomputers in the training of deck officers
The changes in the maritime industry have led to major adjustments in the training of seafarers in general and deck officers in particular. There are innovations not only in the training programs, but also in the means to achieve them. The maritime community is seeking ways to categorize the high cost simulators in order to make their training use compulsory. Obviously, not every maritime college will be able to take advantage of this valuable training tool. This paper advocates the use of microcomputers in the training of deck officers, as a possible alternative to the costly simulators. It investigates the different methodologies that may be used by computer-assisted Instruction (CAI). It gives examples and illustrations of possible use of CAI in addressing subjects such as collision avoidance and use of radar that are important for deck officer training. Moreover, it looks into some existing instructional software and some application programs and highlights their specific training features in different discipline areas of deck officer training. The delicate question of program evaluation has also been given some attention in line with the hardware prerequisites and the academic aspects of the problem. The author gives some insights into the training potentials of a cargo handling program entitled Mariner. He shows how this PC-based program may be used to teach ship stability and cargo handling. In conclusion, the paper suggests some changes in the approach of the IMO model courses and recommends guidelines for the implementation of CAI in the ARSTM1 of Abidjan

Wireless Sensor Networks And Data Fusion For Structural Health Monitoring Of Aircraft
This thesis discusses an architecture and design of a sensor web to be used for structural health monitoring of an aircraft. Also presented are several prototypes of critical parts of the sensor web. The proposed sensor web will utilize sensor nodes situated throughout the structure. These nodes and one or more workstations will support agents that communicate and collaborate to monitor the health of the structure. Agents can be any internal or external autonomous entity that has direct access to affect a given system. For the purposes of this document, an agent will be defined as an autonomous software resource that has the ability to make decisions for itself based on given tasks and abilities while also collaborating with others to find a feasible answer to a given problem regarding the structural health monitoring system. Once the agents have received relevant data from nodes, they will utilize applications that perform data fusion techniques to classify events and further improve the functionality of the system for more accurate future classifications. Agents will also pass alerts up a self-configuring hierarchy of monitor agents and make them available for review by personnel. This thesis makes use of previous results from applying the Gaia methodology for analysis and design of the multiagent system
