    A polyhedral compilation framework for loops with dynamic data-dependent bounds

    International audienceWe study the parallelizing compilation and loop nest optimization of an important class of programs where counted loops have a dynamic data-dependent upper bound. Such loops are amenable to a wider set of transformations than general while loops with inductively defined termination conditions: for example, the substitution of closed forms for induction variables remains applicable, removing the loop-carried data dependences induced by termination conditions. We propose an automatic compilation approach to parallelize and optimize dynamic counted loops. Our approach relies on affine relations only, as implemented in state-of-the-art polyhedral libraries. Revisiting a state-of-the-art framework to parallelize arbitrary while loops, we introduce additional control dependences on data-dependent predicates. Our method goes beyond the state of the art in fully automating the process, specializing the code generation algorithm to the case of dynamic counted loops and avoiding the introduction of spurious loop-carried dependences. We conduct experiments on representative irregular computations, from dynamic programming, computer vision and finite element methods to sparse matrix linear algebra. Furthermore, I show that the solution of the differential equations is affine in the parameters. Because the feasible set is convex pointwise in time, the standard result that a convex function composed with an affine function remains convex yields the desired result that the integrand is convex under composition. Additionally, methods are developed using interval arithmetic to derive the exact state bounds for the solution of a linear dynamic system. Given a nonzero tolerance, the method is rigorously shown to converge to the global solution in a finite time. An implementation is developed, and via a collection of case studies, the technique is shown to be very efficient in computing the global solutions. For problems with embedded nonlinear dynamic systems, the analysis requires a more sophisticated composition technique attributed to McCormick. McCormick's composition technique provides a method for computing a convex underestimator for for the integrand given an arbitrary nonlinear dynamic system provided that convex underestimators and concave overestimators can be given for the states. Because the states are known only implicitly via the solution of the nonlinear differential equations, deriving these convex underestimators and concave overestimators is a highly nontrivial task. Based on standard optimization results, outer approximation, the affine solution to linear dynamic systems, and differential inequalities, I present a novel method for constructing convex underestimators and concave overestimators for arbitrary nonlinear dynamic systems ...My thesis focuses on global optimization of nonconvex integral objective functions subject to parameter dependent ordinary differential equations. In particular, efficient, deterministic algorithms are developed for solving problems with both linear and nonlinear dynamics embedded. The techniques utilized for each problem classification are unified by an underlying composition principle transferring the nonconvexity of the embedded dynamics into the integral objective function. This composition, in conjunction with control parameterization, effectively transforms the problem into a finite dimensional optimization problem where the objective function is given implicitly via the solution of a dynamic system. A standard branch-and-bound algorithm is employed to converge to the global solution by systematically eliminating portions of the feasible space by solving an upper bounding problem and convex lower bounding problem at each node. The novel contributions of this work lie in the derivation and solution of these convex lower bounding relaxations. Separate algorithms exist for deriving convex relaxations for problems with linear dynamic systems embedded and problems with nonlinear dynamic systems embedded. However, the two techniques are unified by the method for relaxing the integral in the objective function. I show that integrating a pointwise in time convex relaxation of the original integrand yields a convex underestimator for the integral. Separate composition techniques, however, are required to derive relaxations for the integrand depending upon the nature of the embedded dynamics; each case is addressed separately.     Reduced basis approximation and a posteriori error estimation for non-coercive elliptic problems : applications to acoustics

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2007.Includes bibliographical references (p. 251-261).Modern engineering problems often require accurate, reliable, and efficient evaluation of quantities of interest, evaluation of which demands the solution of a partial differential equation. We present in this thesis a general methodology for the predicition of outputs of interest of non-coercive elliptic partial differential equations. The essential ingredients are: (i) rapidly convergent reduced basis approximations - Galerkin projection onto a space WN spanned by solutions of the governing partial differential equation at N selected points in parameter-time space; (ii) a posteriori error estimation - relaxations of the error-residual equation that provide rigorous and sharp bounds for the error in specific outputs of interest; and (iii) offline-online computational procedures - in the offline stage the reduced basis approximation is generated; in the online stage, given a new parameter value, we calculate the reduced basis output and associated error bound. The operation count for the online stage depends only on N (typically small) and the parametric complexity of the problem; the method is thus ideally suited for repeated, rapid, reliable evaluation of input-output relationships in the many-query or real-time contexts. We consider the crucial ingredients for the treatment of acoustics problems(cont.) - simultaneous treatment of non-coercive (and near-resonant), non-Hermitian elliptic operators, complex-valued fields, often unbounded domains, and quadratic outputs of interest. We introduce the successive constraint approach to approximate lower bounds to the inf-sup stability constant, a key ingredient of our rigorous a posteriori output error estimator. We develop a novel expanded formulation that enables treatment of quadratic outputs as linear compliant outputs. We also build on existing ideas in domain truncation to develop a radiation boundary condition to truncate unbounded domains. We integrate the different theoretical contributions and apply our methods as proof of concept to some representative applications in acoustic filter design and characterization. In the online stage, we achieve O(10) computational economies of cost while demonstrating both the rapid convergence of the reduced basis approximation, and the sharpness of our error estimators ([approx.] O(20)). The obtained computational economies are expected to be significantly greater for problems of larger size.
