Menger-type theorems with restrictions on path lengths
AbstractIf the paths of length ⩽s, joining two non-adjacent vertices u, υ of a graph cannot be destroyed by deleting less than t vertices, then there are at least t internally vertex-disjoint paths joining u and υ, each having length less than (t+s−2s−2)+(t+s−3s−2). Some constructions show that using paths of length at least st−1t might be necessary
From spanners to multipath spanners
This thesis deals with multipath spanners, as an extension of classical graph spanners. A spanner H of a graph G is a spanning subgraph such that for any pair of vertices a,b is an element of V(G) the distance measured in the spanner dh(a,b) isn't too much stretched compared to the distance measured in the original graph dg(a,b). As such there exists a stretch factor (alpha, beta) such that for all a,b is an element of V(G), dh(a,b) is less than or equal to alpha dg(a,b)+beta. Motivated by multipath routing and after noting that the concept of spanner can be extended to any non decreasing metric, we introduce the notion of multipath spanner. After an introduction to the topic, we will show the results obtained. The first part is devoted to edge-disjoint multipath spanners. The second part id devoted to vertex-disjoint spanners.BORDEAUX1-Bib.electronique (335229901) / SudocSudocFranceF

Path systems are understood to be Graphs. Thus we consider topological minor-
ship as a natural relation of containment for graphs.
By ¯xing special vertices of a topological minor in the containing graph we
specialise this relation to get a short way to formulate theorems about the exi-
stence of path systems. Three new and short proofs of Menger's theorem about
the existence of a special path system are given. One of these proofs gives both
a new version of this theorem including prescribability of initial and terminal
vertices of a non-maximal path system for a maximal path system and an easy
implementable linear Algorithm for ¯nding the desired path system. It is shown
that this theorem contains wellknown theorems of transversal theory (like Hall's
marriage theorem and Ford and Fulkerson's theorem about common transver-
sals) as special cases. The prescibability of startvertices even will be shown for
Mader's theorem. Moreover the new version of Menger's theorem is used to gi-
ve a procedure which investigates the following question: Do some connectivity
conditions (possibly combined with a given path system) force the existence of a
desired path system in a graph? The procedure is constructivly. Either it ¯nds a
counterexample, that is, a graph satisfying the given assumptions but not con-
taining the desired path system, or it gives an algorithm with a linear running
time in the number of vertices and edges of the input graph which constructs
the desired path system. More precisely the algorithm either ¯nds a separator
showing that the input graph doesn't satisfy the connectivity condition or the
desired path system will be constructed. Two examples demonstrate how this
procedure works: Two Theorems about the existance of cycles in a given graph
containing prescribed vertices will be deduced.
