    Investigating the importance of motivations and barriers related to microgeneration uptake in the UK

    AbstractMicrogeneration technologies such as solar photovoltaics, solar thermal, wind and heat pumps may be able to contribute to meeting UK climate change and energy security targets, but their contribution to UK domestic energy supply remains low. This research uses a best-worst scaling survey of microgeneration adopters, considerers and rejecters (n=291) to determine the relative importance of different motivations and barriers in microgeneration (non) adoption decisions. The most important motivations are earning money from installation, increasing household energy independence and protecting against future high energy costs. Results indicate that the introduction of Feed-in Tariffs has clearly encouraged a new, more financially-motivated, group to install. Financial factors are the most important barriers and of most importance to rejecters is the prospect of losing money if they moved home. The Green Deal was introduced to reduce this barrier, but may instead exacerbate the problem as potential homebuyers are put off purchasing a home with an attached Green Deal debt. The difficulty in finding trustworthy information on microgeneration is also a major obstacle to adoption, particularly for considerers, despite efforts by the government and microgeneration interest groups to reduce this barrier. Self-sufficiency in energy is a more important motivation for those considering or having rejected installation than for adopters. Provision of accessible information and greater emphasis on household self-sufficiency in energy could help improve the uptake

    Expert elicitation of remote meat inspection prerequisites in Sweden using best-worst scaling (case 1)

    Remote work technologies offer unprecedented flexibility to modernise official meat inspection (MI). Remote meat inspections, alongside on -site controls have a potential to make MI more sustainable when it comes to working conditions, logistic control hurdles and travel -related emissions. Nevertheless, preferences of meat control staff for features and technological set up of remote MI remain unknown. The paper investigates preferences of official Swedish MI staff for different features of remote MI. The study utilises a quantitative method, namely best -worst scaling to compare the relative importance of six aspects of remote inspections: camera location and settings, connectivity, availability of personnel at abattoirs, communication and language, security and fraud prevention, and ability to relay olfaction and haptics. The survey, administered in September - October 2023 was answered by 54.7% of the Swedish meat control staff employed by the Swedish Food Agency. The results show that respondents rate security and fraud prevention (Security) as the most important aspect for remote MI followed by connectivity and camera placement (Camera). Communication and language (Communication) and ability to relay olfaction and haptics (Senses) are considered the least important aspects. The latter findings can be explained by the fact that Official Veterinarians, which represent the majority of respondents (49%), do not routinely communicate directly with slaughter personnel who are often seasonal workers coming from outside Sweden. Moreover, olfaction and haptics could be considered naturally impractical with remote technologies. The study also finds that respondents from different administrative units and job titles have different preferences for the features of remote MI. Respondents from the headquarter generally have higher preferences for connectivity than respondents from other units. Additionally, respondents with more hands-on experience in MI, such as Official Veterinarians, tend to rate security issues higher than respondents with leading or support roles. Overall, it seems possible to meet the control staff expectations and preferences regarding the prerequisites of remote MI by legal and technical adaptations needed for this type of control flexibility

    Factoring community welfare estimates into freshwater allocation decision making in New Zealand : a common good case study : a thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Natural Resource Management at Massey University, New Zealand

    The study recognises the centrality of the ‘common good’ by working to improve the intergenerational well-being of all people in society. The research adopts the Tukituki River catchment in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand as a case study to demonstrate how community welfare estimates can be factored into freshwater allocation planning and decision-making. The Tukituki catchment faces water pollution and allocation challenges that are typical of agricultural landscapes with summer water scarcity. A survey measured both current and future perceptions of the catchment, focussing on comparing perceptions of anglers and gamebird hunters with other recreational users. A second survey estimated the marginal welfare benefits generated by improved water quality and the welfare associated with trust in freshwater advocates and policy-oriented organisations. Most users felt the catchment was in a poor state and wanted a future with improved water quality. There was little or no difference between the perceptions of anglers and other recreational users. Gamebird hunter’s perceptions were different from other recreational users at the p<.05 level. Recreational users were willing to pay a mean $6.67 a month for ten years to improve water quality to a level representative of the successful delivery of current policy goals by 2030. Bayesian trust scores were used to model social capital in the form of a novel social trust economy, which proved to be an effective descriptor of the known political economy.
