    An investigation of the relationship between thermal imaging and digital thermometer

    BACKGROUND: A number of research papers and theoretical clinical models summarising how temperature of the skin over the knee may be altered according to different pathological processes have been published. Thermal imaging (TI) is generally regarded as the ‘Gold’ or ‘reference’ standard for measuring skin temperature, however this technology is not widely accessible to most musculoskeletal physiotherapists working in clinical environments. This is largely due to the time required for analysis of the thermal images and high cost of the equipment. A digital thermometer (DT) is portable with a convenient display of results which could offer an inexpensive substitute. AIM: This study determined interchangeability between thermal imaging and a digital thermometer, using Bland-Altman limits of agreement, to determine skin temperature differences between right and left knees. METHOD: 71 healthy participants in the age group of 8 to 40 participated in the study. Data were collected in two phases. The first phase was as part of a public engagement event at the Lancashire Science Festival where school children were invited to learn about science. The second phase of data collection took place as part of a PhD study where staff and students at the university were recruited via electronic advert and posters displayed around the campus. All subjects were free from lower back or lower limb problems and had not had any previous lower limb surgery. RESULTS: Matched paired t tests showed no significant difference between temperature difference between right and left using DT and TI (t= 1.41, df= 69, P= 0.08). The DT and TI were interchangeable to measure knee skin temperature difference with a limit of agreement of -0.64 and 0.75; this limit of agreement is acceptable based on previous literature where skin temperature differences between affected and non-affected knees are equal to or greater than 1°C. CONCLUSION: This study concludes that an inexpensive handheld digital thermometer shows acceptable agreement with a thermal imaging camera. Clinically a handheld digital thermometer has the potential to play an important role in the localized assessment of skin temperature in physiotherapy and can offer an inexpensive substitute to thermal imaging; due to the massive difference in cost it is worth considering the adoption of digital thermometry in routine musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice

    The aim is the fabrication and mechanical testing of sandwich structures including a new core material known as fiber network sandwich materials. As fabrication norms for such a material do not exist as such, so the primary goal is to reproduce successfully fiber network sandwich specimens. Enhanced vibration testing diagnoses the quality of the fabrication process. These sandwich materials possess low structural strength as proved by the static tests (compression, bending), but the vibration test results give high damping values, making the material suitable for vibro-acoustic applications where structural strength is of secondary importance e.g., internal panelling of a helicopter

    The problem of calculating turbine engine component durability is addressed. Nonlinear, finite-element structural analyses, cyclic constitutive behavior models, and an advanced creep-fatigue life prediction method called strainrange partitioning were assessed for their applicability to the solution of durability problems in hot-section components of gas turbine engines. Three different component or subcomponent geometries are examined: a stress concentration in a turbine disk; a louver lip of a half-scale combustor liner; and a squealer tip of a first-stage high-pressure turbine blade. Cyclic structural analyses were performed for all three problems. The computed strain-temperature histories at the critical locations of the combustor linear and turbine blade components were imposed on smooth specimens in uniaxial, strain-controlled, thermomechanical fatigue tests of evaluate the structural and life analysis methods

    One of the major challenges of bone tissue engineering is the production of a suitable scaffold material. In this review the current composite materials options available are considered covering both the methods of both production and assessing the scaffolds. A range of production routes have been investigated ranging from the use of porogens to produce the porosity through to controlled deposition methods. The testing regimes have included mechanical testing of the materials produced through to in vivo testing of the scaffolds. While the ideal scaffold material has not yet been produced, progress is being made

    As a part of the investigation of the control system failure Inertial Upper Stage on IUS-1 flight to position a Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) in geosynchronous orbit, the materials utilized in the techroll seal are evaluated for possible failure models. Studies undertaken included effect of temperature on the strength of the system, effect of fatigue on the strength of the system, thermogravimetric analysis, thermomechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimeter analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, and peel test. The most likely failure mode is excessive temperature in the seal. In addition, the seal material is susceptible to fatigue damage which could be a contributing factor

Whilst defining this for a specific scenario is influenced by the associated requirements and conditions, the process can be further guided through the establishment of the relative usefulness of alternative frameworks for composing the training and testing material. In this regard, the present paper provides an analysis of the effects, on the speaker recognition accuracy, of various bases for the formation of the training and testing data. The experimental investigations are conducted based on the use of digit utterances taken from the XM2VTS database. The paper presents a detailed description of the individual approaches considered and discusses the experimental results obtained in different cases
