    Visible camera cryostat design and performance for the SuMIRe Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS)

    We describe the design and performance of the SuMIRe Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) visible camera cryostats. SuMIRe PFS is a massively multi-plexed ground-based spectrograph consisting of four identical spectrograph modules, each receiving roughly 600 fibers from a 2394 fiber robotic positioner at the prime focus. Each spectrograph module has three channels covering wavelength ranges 380~nm -- 640~nm, 640~nm -- 955~nm, and 955~nm -- 1.26~um, with the dispersed light being imaged in each channel by a f/1.07 vacuum Schmidt camera. The cameras are very large, having a clear aperture of 300~mm at the entrance window, and a mass of ∼\sim280~kg.     This publication is a collection of extended abstracts of presentations given at the HPCCP/CAS (High Performance Computing and Communications Program/Computational Aerosciences Project) Workshop held on August 24-26, 1998, at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California. The objective of the Workshop was to bring together the aerospace high performance computing community, consisting of airframe and propulsion companies, independent software vendors, university researchers, and government scientists and engineers. The Workshop was sponsored by the HPCCP Office at NASA Ames Research Center. The Workshop consisted of over 40 presentations, including an overview of NASA's High Performance Computing and Communications Program and the Computational Aerosciences Project; ten sessions of papers representative of the high performance computing research conducted within the Program by the aerospace industry, academia, NASA, and other government laboratories; two panel sessions; and a special presentation by Mr. James Bailey

    Compact Modeling Framework v3.0 for high-resolution global ocean–ice–atmosphere models

    We present a new version of the Compact Modeling Framework (CMF3.0) developed for the software environment of stand-alone and coupled global geophysical fluid models. The CMF3.0 is designed for use on high- and ultrahigh-resolution models on massively parallel supercomputers.The key features of the previous CMF, version 2.0, are mentioned to reflect progress in our research. In CMF3.0, the message passing interface (MPI) approach with a high-level abstract driver, optimized coupler interpolation and I/O algorithms is replaced with the Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) paradigm communications scheme, while the central hub architecture evolves into a set of simultaneously working services. Performance tests for both versions are carried out. As an addition, some information about the parallel realization of the EnOI (Ensemble Optimal Interpolation) data assimilation method and the nesting technology, as program services of the CMF3.0, is presented.</p

    The research objectives of the 280 projects placed under contract in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) 1990 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase 1 program are described. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses in response to NASA's 1990 SBIR Phase 1 Program Solicitation. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 280, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. The document also includes Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference in the 1990 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA field center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number

    NASA high performance computing and communications program

    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's HPCC program is part of a new Presidential initiative aimed at producing a 1000-fold increase in supercomputing speed and a 100-fold improvement in available communications capability by 1997. As more advanced technologies are developed under the HPCC program, they will be used to solve NASA's 'Grand Challenge' problems, which include improving the design and simulation of advanced aerospace vehicles, allowing people at remote locations to communicate more effectively and share information, increasing scientist's abilities to model the Earth's climate and forecast global environmental trends, and improving the development of advanced spacecraft. NASA's HPCC program is organized into three projects which are unique to the agency's mission: the Computational Aerosciences (CAS) project, the Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) project, and the Remote Exploration and Experimentation (REE) project. An additional project, the Basic Research and Human Resources (BRHR) project exists to promote long term research in computer science and engineering and to increase the pool of trained personnel in a variety of scientific disciplines. This document presents an overview of the objectives and organization of these projects as well as summaries of individual research and development programs within each project

    The population of most western countries is ageing and, therefore, the ageing issue now matters more than ever. According to the reports of the United Nations in 2017, there were a total of 15.8 million (26.9%) people over 60 years of age in the United Kindom, and the numbers are projected to reach 23.5 million (31.5%) by 2050. Spending on medical treatment and healthcare for older adults accounts for two-fifths of the UK National Health Service (NHS) budget. Keeping older people healthy is a challenge. In general, exercise is believed to benefit both mental and physical health. Specifically, resistance band exercises are proven by many studies that they have potentially positive effects on both mental and physical health. However, treatment using resistance band exercise is usually done in unmonitored environments, such as at home or in a rehabilitation centre; therefore, the exercise cannot be measured and/or quantified accurately.     The NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP) attempts to reach a culturally diverse group of promising U.S. graduate students whose research interests are compatible with NASA's programs in space science and aerospace technology. Each year we select approximately 100 new awardees based on competitive evaluation of their academic qualifications, their proposed research plan and/or plan of study, and their planned utilization of NASA research facilities. Fellowships of up to $22,000 are awarded for one year and are renewable, based on satisfactory progress, for a total of three years. Approximately 300 graduate students are, thus, supported by this program at any one time. Students may apply any time during their graduate career or prior to receiving their baccalaureate degree. An applicant must be sponsored by his/her graduate department chair or faculty advisor; this book discusses the GSRP in great detail
