Mass and power modeling of communication satellites
Analytic estimating relationships for the mass and power requirements for major satellite subsystems are described. The model for each subsystem is keyed to the performance drivers and system requirements that influence their selection and use. Guidelines are also given for choosing among alternative technologies which accounts for other significant variables such as cost, risk, schedule, operations, heritage, and life requirements. These models are intended for application to first order systems analyses, where resources do not warrant detailed development of a communications system scenario. Given this ground rule, the models are simplified to 'smoothed' representation of reality. Communication and distributional complexity of joint probability mass functions
The problem of truly-lossless (Pe = 0) distributed source coding [1] requires knowledge of the joint statistics of the sources. In particular the locations of the zeroes of the probability mass functions (pmfs) are crucial for encoding at rates below (H(X),H(Y)) [2]. We consider the distributed computation of the empirical joint pmf Pn of a sequence of random variable pairs observed at physically separated nodes of a network. We consider both worst-case and average measures of information exchange and treat both exact calculation of Pn and a notion of approximation. We find that in all cases the communication cost grows linearly with the size of the input. Further, we consider the problem of determining whether the empirical pmf has a zero in a particular location and show that in most cases considered this also requires a communication cost that is linear in the input size
Perception of Social and Behaviour Change Communication Media in Cross River State, Nigeria
In the wake of increased interventions into health and social problems arising from various behaviours in Cross River State, this paper is set to ascertain the most effective media that can be utilized for effective communication. The mass media of communication, including television, radio, newspapers and magazines, bill boards, hand bills, posters, theatre and many other social and interpersonal media of communication are available for patronage by interventionists targeting change in any society. The question however is which of the media is the most viable? To determine this, a survey was conducted to sample the opinions of 140 media students from two higher institutions: the University of Calabar and the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH), all in Cross River State. The population of the study comprised both undergraduates and graduate students of Theatre and Media Studies and Mass Communication in both institutions. Findings reveal that out of the fourteen (14) media tools brought into limelight, radio, television, and billboards are the most patronized tools for change communication. Mass Media and Polarisation Processes in the Bounded Confidence Model of Opinion Dynamics
This paper presents a social simulation in which we add an additional layer of mass media communication to the social network \'bounded confidence\' model of Deffuant et al (2000). A population of agents on a lattice with continuous opinions and bounded confidence adjust their opinions on the basis of binary social network interactions between neighbours or communication with a fixed opinion. There are two mechanisms for interaction. \'Social interaction\' occurs between neighbours on a lattice and \'mass communication,\' adjusts opinions based on an agent interacting with a fixed opinion. Two new variables are added, polarisation: the degree to which two mass media opinions differ, and broadcast ratio: the number of social interactions for each mass media communication. Four dynamical regimes are observed, fragmented, double extreme convergence, a state of persistent opinion exchange leading to single extreme convergence and a disordered state. Double extreme convergence is found where agents are less willing to change opinion and mass media communications are common or where there is moderate willingness to change opinion and a high frequency of mass media communications. Single extreme convergence is found where there is moderate willingness to change opinion and a lower frequency of mass media communication. A period of persistent opinion exchange precedes single extreme convergence, it is characterized by the formation of two opposing groups of opinion separated by a gradient of opinion exchange. With even very low frequencies of mass media communications this results in a move to central opinions followed by a global drift to one extreme as one of the opposing groups of opinion dominates. Re-Viewing the Mass Communication Education Curriculum. Case for Language/Linguistics, Communication Synergy.
Curriculum review of any academic curriculum is one way of demonstrating the dynamism of such discipline. Mass Communication as a dynamic discipline is one such beneficiary of curriculum review. In line with Iwuchukwu’s (2010) earlier submission that no graduate of any academic level or discipline worth’s more than the curriculum that produces him/her, it was an observed inability of some practicing journalists, especially, those in the print. To handle ethical issues, which was traced to a lacuna in the curriculum that led to the introduction of the course, ethics. This paper seeks to unveil another obvious lapse among mass communication practitioners cutting across, print, broadcast and electronic media. It further highlights that such lapses as incompetence in language use, both at the phonetic, phonological semantic. Syntactic stylistic and even psycholinguistic to be a direct fall out of a perceived lacuna in the present mass communication education curriculum especially in Nigeria. We contend that a review of the present curriculum is glaringly imperative recommending not only the inclusion of more language/linguistic courses but also a stronger synergy between language/linguistics and mass communication. This is our opinion could be boosted with a course "Language and Communication not only though to all mass communication students at all levels, but it being recognized as another Sub-field of specialization by mass communication graduates who wish to further their stadium at the postgraduates levels as in the case in the University of Calabar
A General, Mass-Preserving Navier-Stokes Projection Method
The conservation of mass is common issue with multiphase fluid simulations.
In this work a novel projection method is presented which conserves mass both
locally and globally. The fluid pressure is augmented with a time-varying
component which accounts for any global mass change. The resulting system of
equations is solved using an efficient Schur-complement method. Using the
proposed method four numerical examples are performed: the evolution of a
static bubble, the rise of a bubble, the breakup of a thin fluid thread, and
the extension of a droplet in shear flow. The method is capable of conserving
the mass even in situations with morphological changes such as droplet breakup.Comment: Submitted to Computer Physics Communication
