    Comparative Analysis of Murabahah and Mudharabah Financing Risk from Islamic Microfinance Institutions Perspective

    The most frequently used financing contracts in Islamic financial institutions are murabahah and mudharabah. This study aims to reveal the phenomenon in the field about the description of the risk comparison between murabahah financing and mudharabah financing from the BMT side. This study uses descriptive qualitative research methods through data collection methods with in-depth interviews with nine respondents who have experience handling the risks of murabahah financing and mudharabah financing at BMT. This study shows that the risk of mudharabah financing is greater than the risk of murabahah financing. In practice, mudharabah financing tends to be relatively high due to asymmetric information and moral hazard. The inherent risk in murabahah financing is the risk of member default due to default or member negligence in returning installments. This study also identifies risk factors such as trust risk and sharia legal risk for murabahah financing with wakalah contracts. This study shows that BMT applies the precautionary principle and is appropriate to maintain the institution's health to minimize the risks that occur. This research is expected to be a reference in managing the risk of murabahah financing and mudharabah financing with innovative strategies. The BMT Islamic Microfinance Institution needs to stimulate and educate to reduce the risk of mudharabah financing so that it can become a top priority for financing

    Managing risks of capital mobility

    Inherent in pursuing openness to international capital flows is an awareness that it brings both benefits and risks. Much of the current debate is about how best to balance them. Major benefits for developing countries include access to a broader menu of investment sources, options, and instruments, as well as enhanced efficiency of domestic financial institutions and the discipline of capital markets in conducting domestic macroeconomic policy. By easing financing constraints, the greater availability of international finance can extend the period for implementing needed adjustments. From the perspective of emerging market economies, the author highlights two sources of risk: the host governments'policy of liberalizing capital controls before having established the macroeconomic, regulatory, and institutional foundations required for capital openness. A shift in foreign leaders'and investors'sentiments and confidence, not necessarily related to a particular country's long-term creditworthiness. Risk management demands judicious strategies for both corporate and financial institutions and national policy. At the institutional level, with the advances in technology and communications, financial risk management practice has improved significantly in recent years through the use of statistical models, such as value at risk, computer simulation, and stress testing. At the national level, with the worldwide trend toward democracy, the author argues that managing the risks of financial openness will require developing national mechanisms through which to provide insurance to citizens-through the marketplace or through redistributive policy-and thus to avert political pressure for capital controls. To succeed, open democratic societies have to balance the threat of capital exit, made easier by the opening of capital markets, with the political voice of citizens-demanding protection through redistribution, social safety nets, and other insurance-like measures. These insurance measures have been critical increasing the tension between politics and financial openness in OECD countries.     Innovations in rural and agriculture finance

    Most rural households lack access to reliable and affordable finance for agriculture and other livelihood activities. Many small farmers live in remote areas where retail banking is limited and production risks are high. The recent financial crisis has made the provision of credit even tighter and the need to explore innovative approaches to rural and agricultural finance even more urgent. This set of 14 briefs clearly points out the importance of business realities faced by small farmers, including low education levels, the dominance of subsistence farming, and the lack of access to modern financial instruments. These conditions mean that new and innovative institutions are required to reach small farmers. Emerging communication technologies provide new opportunities for rural banking by reducing business costs and alleviating information asymmetries. New financing instruments, such as weather index-based insurance and microinsurance, also have great potential for managing the risks faced by small farmers. In addition, bundling financial services with nonfinancial services like marketing and extension services offers new opportunities for small farmers to increase their productivity and incomes. Finally, an enabling policy environment and legal framework, enforcement of rules and regulations, and a supportive rural infrastructure all contribute immensely to making sustainable access to finance a reality.     This paper is offered not as a fully comprehensive survey of the emerging area of blended value investing, but rather as a set of examples of how such investing practices are being developed and applied around the world. The paper's intent is not to provide a single answer for all investment challenges, but to demonstrate how groups of investors are mobilizing capital on new terms to meet the challenges of emerging investment opportunities, as well as the demands of investors seeking out new asset classes in which to place their capital.This paper presents innovations in capital finance that promise to bridge market-rate interests with strategic opportunities to create blended value that benefits shareholder and stakeholder alike. The following examples speak to an evolving capital convergence wherein mainstream capital markets and investing will increasingly become drivers of new solutions to historic problems. Blended value investing funds and instruments offer financing strategies a set of tools that go beyond traditional philanthropy or market rate investing and which complement the vision we all share of a world with greater equity and opportunity for its members.This paper also identifies several areas of research that would help advance the field of blended value investing.     Integrating land financing into subnational fiscal management

    Land assets have become an important source of financing capital investments by subnational governments in developing countries. Land assets, often with billions of dollars per transaction, rival and sometimes surpass subnational borrowing or fiscal transfers for capital spending. While reducing the uncertainty surrounding future debt repayment capacity, the use of land-based revenues for financing infrastructure can entail substantial fiscal risks. Land sales often involve less transparency than borrowing. Many sales are conducted off-budget, which makes it easier to divert proceeds into operating budgets. Capital revenues from sales of land assets exert a much more volatile trend and could create an incentive to appropriate auction proceeds for financing the operating budget, particularly in times of budget shortfalls during economic downturns. Furthermore, land collateral and expected future land-value appreciation for bank loans can be linked with macroeconomic risks. It is critical to develop ex ante prudential rules comparable to those governing borrowing, to reduce fiscal risks and the contingent liabilities associated with the land-based revenues for financing infrastructure.Banks&Banking Reform,Public Sector Economics,Debt Markets,Municipal Financial Management,Public&Municipal Finance

    This Conference brings together the financial experience of rural and agricultural microfinance institutions and the experience of the Common Fund and other agencies with promoting commodities and small and microentrepreneurs producing, processing and marketing commodities. We expect that this will result in: – the further growth and development of sustainable financial services; and – the further growth and development of sustainable commodity-related enterprises. These two objectives – the growth of profitable local financial institutions and of profitable local enterprises – are interrelated and mutually reinforcing. There is one lesson to be learned from the now developed industrial countries: Focusing in an early stage of development on the poor, who largely depend on commodities, means focusing on a huge future market. We hope to get this message across to large numbers of financial institutions. --
