Building dynamic capabilities in product development: the role of knowledge management

    Get PDF
This paper contributes to the clarification of the connections between knowledge management and dynamic capabilities in the context of product development to see how they explain product development competences. Building on the knowledge management and dynamic capabilities literatures, the paper argues that the social side of knowledge management has a role to play as enabler of dynamic capabilities in the context of product development. Further, dynamic capabilities shape product development competences. Empirical evidence is provided by performing survey research with data collected from 80 product development projects developed in Spain.Capabilities , Knowledge management, Organizational knowledge

Knowledge Management Applied To Business Process Reengineering

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the role of knowledge management (KM) as a critical factor for the business process reengineering (BPR) success. It supports the theory that the knowledge management can supply the dynamic necessary to stimulate successful reengineering and minimize the failure rate and its sources. Implementing KM strategy in reengineering projects will lead to better outcomes, building the support for long-term success into the design of business systems and processes

Applying knowledge management in education : teaching database normalization : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Information Science at Massey University

In tertiary education, Information Science has been attracting more attention in both teaching and learning. However, along the course on the database design theory, learners always find it hard to grasp the knowledge on database normalisation and hard to apply different levels of the normal forms while designing a database. This results poor database construction and difficulties in database maintenance. In regard to this teaching and learning dilemma, academic teaching staff should, on the one hand, pay more attention to organising different teaching resources on database normalisation concepts and making the best use of the existing and newly developed resources so as to make the teaching environment more adaptive and more sharable. and on the other hand, apply different teaching methods to different students according to their knowledge levels by understanding the nature of each learner's behaviour, interests and preferences concerning the existing learning resources. However, at present there is no effective Information Technology tool to use in considering the dynamic nature of knowledge discovery, creation, transfer utilisation and reuse in this area. This provides an opportunity to examine the potentiality of applying knowledge management in education with the focus on teaching database normalisation, in terms of knowledge discovering, sharing, utilisation and reuse. This thesis contains a review of knowledge management and web mining technologies in the education environment, presents a dynamic knowledge management framework for better utilising teaching resource in the area of database normalisation and diagnoses the students' learning patterns and behaviours to assist effective teaching and learning. It is argued that knowledge management-supported education can work as a value-added process which supports the different needs of teachers and learners

The era of the new millennium has witnessed a wide range of the revolutionized technology that affects our lives and the way an organization is conducted. The contemporary business sectors start to recognize the potential use of knowledge management in the new organizational processes. As a result, increasing numbers of organizations pay attention to the creative value of leveraging knowledge as one of their potential assets. Therefore, organizations start to focus on knowledge as one of the important elements in competitive advantage that needs to be utilized efficiently and effectively. They have shown a great attention of knowledge management in their business strategy incorporated with technology. The role of technological tools and applications is essential in supporting and enhancing knowledge management strategy. There has been a transition from traditional information system to new a concept of knowledge management system employed by organization to sustain competitive advantage in dynamic and unstable environment. Further, to shift the paradigm of knowledge management systems concept from business sectors, this study focused on the KMS applications and tools particularly in Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) environment. The purpose of this study is to (a) identify the relationship of business strategy, knowledge management (KM) Strategy, knowledge management systems (KMS) strategy, information system (IS) strategy and information technology (IT) strategy, particularly in the context of IHE, (b) describe those strategies and their relationship based on the context of IHE. This will provide guidance and effective methods for formulating the KMS strategy with the aim to align it with business strategies and ensuring success of its implementation

Towards a Unifying Process Framework for Services Knowledge Management

    Get PDF
Activities concerned with the design, planning and execution of services are becoming increasingly complex. This is due to the involvement of many different stakeholders, the complexity of the service systems themselves, and the dynamic nature of their organizational and ICT environments. Service knowledge management helps share and reuse relevant knowledge among the different stakeholders, and therefore emerges as a critical factor to perform service activities with required efficiency and quality. Recent advances in knowledge management provide promising opportunities to support individual service activities within a single domain. Yet, sharing knowledge throughout the service life-cycle and across service domains is still very challenging. The source of service knowledge, its usage, update frequency, encoding and associated stakeholders may vary depending upon the service activity and the service domain. Based on a critical analysis of currently proposed frameworks, we argue that a process framework approach is beneficial for service knowledge management. To support our claim, we offer an abstract template and a typical service life-cycle that can be adopted to integrate heterogeneous service knowledge from diverse sources

Information Technology as a Facilitator of Enhancing Dynamic Capability through Knowledge Management

Dynamic capability is an emergent field of firms encountering turbulent administrative environment. Eisenhardt and Martin (2000) point out that firms with dynamic capability are not guaranteed to enhancing organizational performance, but without dynamic capability it is impossible for firms to enhance organizational performance. Another research stream in current management thoughts is related to knowledge management that has been confirmed to be a major source of competitive advantage. Research question of this research is whether or not knowledge management contributes to the enhancement of dynamic capability, and thus to the enhancement of competitive advantage of a firm. Following previous research interest of knowledge management on the application of information technology (IT), this research incorporates knowledge management facilitated by IT to examine the effect on enhancement of dynamic capability. Based on a survey of top 1000 Taiwanese firms, the current empirical research tests relevant hypotheses with regression models. Empirical findings include management of both endogenous and exogenous knowledge through IT applications significantly affects the enhancement of dynamic capability. Results shed light to current strategic management issues
