Strategies for a centralized single product multiclass M/G/1 make-to-stock queue
Make-to-stock queues are typically investigated in the M/M/1 settings. For centralized single-item systems with backlogs, the multilevel rationing (MR) policy is established as optimal and the strict priority (SP) policy is a practical compromise, balancing cost and ease of implementation. However, the optimal policy is unknown when service time is general, i.e., for M/G/1 queues. Dynamic programming, the tool commonly used to investigate the MR policy in make-to-stock queues, is less practical when service time is general. In this paper we focus on customer composition: the proportion of customers of each class to the total number of customers in the queue. We do so because the number of customers in M/G/1 queues is invariant for any nonidling and nonanticipating policy. To characterize customer composition, we consider a series of two-priority M/G/1 queues where the first service time in each busy period is different from standard service times, i.e., this first service time is exceptional. We characterize the required exceptional first service times and the exact solution of such queues. From our results, we derive the optimal cost and control for the MR and SP policies for M/G/1 make-to-stock queues
Diffeomorphic Demons using Normalised Mutual Information, Evaluation on Multi-Modal Brain MR Images
The demons algorithm is a fast non-parametric non-rigid registration method. In recent years great efforts have been made to improve the approach; the state of the art version yields symmetric inverse-consistent large-deformation diffeomorphisms. However, only limited work has explored inter-modal similarity metrics, with no practical evaluation on multi-modality data. We present a diffeomorphic demons implementation using the analytical gradient of Normalised Mutual Information (NMI) in a conjugate gradient optimiser. We report the first qualitative and quantitative assessment of the demons for inter-modal registration. Experiments to spatially normalise real MR images, and to recover simulated deformation fields, demonstrate (i) similar accuracy from NMI-demons and classical demons when the latter may be used, and (ii) similar accuracy for NMI-demons on T1w-T1w and T1w-T2w registration, demonstrating its potential in multi-modal scenarios

The Middle Powers Initiative, a program of the Global Security Institute, organized an Extraordinary Strategy Consultation on the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) 2005 Review Conference in cooperation with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter at The Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia, January 26-28, 2005.Entitled Atlanta Consultation II: On the Future of the NPT, the gathering involved high-level representatives of key governments and was modeled after the successful Atlanta Consultation I held at The Carter Center in 2000. MIMO Transmission with Residual Transmit-RF Impairments
Physical transceiver implementations for multiple-input multiple-output
(MIMO) wireless communication systems suffer from transmit-RF (Tx-RF)
impairments. In this paper, we study the effect on channel capacity and
error-rate performance of residual Tx-RF impairments that defy proper
compensation. In particular, we demonstrate that such residual distortions
severely degrade the performance of (near-)optimum MIMO detection algorithms.
To mitigate this performance loss, we propose an efficient algorithm, which is
based on an i.i.d. Gaussian model for the distortion caused by these
impairments. In order to validate this model, we provide measurement results
based on a 4-stream Tx-RF chain implementation for MIMO orthogonal

Multiresolution source coding using entropy constrained dithered scalar quantization
In this paper, we build multiresolution source codes using entropy constrained dithered scalar quantizers. We demonstrate that for n-dimensional random vectors, dithering followed by uniform scalar quantization and then by entropy coding achieves performance close to the n-dimensional optimum for a multiresolution source code. Based on this result, we propose a practical code design algorithm and compare its performance with that of the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm on natural images
Evaluation of crime prevention initiatives
This third toolbox in the series published by the EUCPN Secretariat focuses on the main theme of the Irish Presidency, which is the evaluation of crime prevention initiatives. The theme is explored and elaborated in various ways through: a literature review; two workshops with international experts and practitioners during which the strengths and weaknesses of programme evaluation were discussed in detail; a screening of existing guidelines and manuals on evaluation; and finally, a call which was launched by the EUCPN Secretariat to the Member States to collect some practices on the evaluation of crime prevention initiatives
