Motivational Interviewing for Parent-child Health Interventions: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Purpose: Motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centered approach focusing on building intrinsic motivation for change. This paper presents a meta-analysis of parent-involved MI to improve pediatric health behavior and health outcomes.
Methods: Study inclusion criteria: (1) examined modifiable pediatric health behaviors (\u3c 18 years old); (2) used MI or motivational enhancement; (3) conducted a randomized controlled trial with a comparison group (non-MI control or active treatment group); (4) conducted the intervention with only a parent or both a parent and child; and (5) were written in English. Twenty-five studies (with 5,130 participants) were included and independently rated. Weighted mean effect sizes, using random-effects assumptions, were calculated.
Results: Relative to comparison groups, MI was associated with significant improvements in health behaviors (e.g., oral health, diet, physical activity, reduced screen time, smoking cessation, reduced second hand smoke) and reduction in body mass index. Results suggest that MI may also outperform comparison groups in terms of dental caries, but more studies are needed. MI interventions were more successful at improving diets for Caucasians and when the intervention included more MI components.
Conclusions: Our findings provide support for providing motivational interviewing to parents and children to improve pediatric health behaviors
Fair Evaluation of Global Network Aligners
Biological network alignment identifies topologically and functionally
conserved regions between networks of different species. It encompasses two
algorithmic steps: node cost function (NCF), which measures similarities
between nodes in different networks, and alignment strategy (AS), which uses
these similarities to rapidly identify high-scoring alignments. Different
methods use both different NCFs and different ASs. Thus, it is unclear whether
the superiority of a method comes from its NCF, its AS, or both. We already
showed on MI-GRAAL and IsoRankN that combining NCF of one method and AS of
another method can lead to a new superior method. Here, we evaluate MI-GRAAL
against newer GHOST to potentially further improve alignment quality. Also, we
approach several important questions that have not been asked systematically
thus far. First, we ask how much of the node similarity information in NCF
should come from sequence data compared to topology data. Existing methods
determine this more-less arbitrarily, which could affect the resulting
alignment(s). Second, when topology is used in NCF, we ask how large the size
of the neighborhoods of the compared nodes should be. Existing methods assume
that larger neighborhood sizes are better.
We find that MI-GRAAL's NCF is superior to GHOST's NCF, while the performance
of the methods' ASs is data-dependent. Thus, the combination of MI-GRAAL's NCF
and GHOST's AS could be a new superior method for certain data. Also, which
amount of sequence information is used within NCF does not affect alignment
quality, while the inclusion of topological information is crucial. Finally,
larger neighborhood sizes are preferred, but often, it is the second largest
size that is superior, and using this size would decrease computational
complexity.
Together, our results give several general recommendations for a fair

Application of Generalized Partial Volume Estimation for Mutual Information based Registration of High Resolution SAR and Optical Imagery
Mutual information (MI) has proven its effectiveness for automated multimodal image registration for numerous remote sensing applications like image fusion. We analyze MI performance with respect to joint histogram bin size and the employed joint histogramming technique. The affect of generalized partial volume estimation (GPVE) utilizing B-spline kernels with different histogram bin sizes on MI performance has been thoroughly explored for registration of high resolution SAR (TerraSAR-X) and optical (IKONOS-2) satellite images. Our experiments highlight possibility of an inconsistent MI behavior with different joint histogram bin size which gets reduced with an increase in order of B-spline kernel employed in GPVE. In general, bin size reduction and/or increasing B-spline order have a smoothing affect on MI surfaces and even the lowest order B-spline with a suitable histogram bin size can achieve same pixel level accuracy as achieved by the higher order kernels more consistently
The CMS Computing System: Successes and Challenges
Each LHC experiment will produce datasets with sizes of order one petabyte
per year. All of this data must be stored, processed, transferred, simulated
and analyzed, which requires a computing system of a larger scale than ever
mounted for any particle physics experiment, and possibly for any enterprise in
the world. I discuss how CMS has chosen to address these challenges, focusing
on recent tests of the system that demonstrate the experiment's readiness for

Background and AimsTo review published studies on the effectiveness of combining cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI) to treat comorbid clinical and subclinical alcohol use disorder (AUD) and major depression (MDD) and estimate the effect of this compared with usual care. MethodsWe conducted systematic literature searches in PubMed, PsycINFO and Embase up to June 2013 and identified additional studies through cross-references in included studies and systematic reviews. Twelve studies comprising 1721 patients met our inclusion criteria. The studies had sufficient statistical power to detect small effect sizes. ResultsCBT/MI proved effective for treating subclinical and clinical AUD and MDD compared with controls, with small overall effect sizes at post-treatment [g=0.17, confidence interval (CI)=0.07-0.28, Pless than0.001 for decrease of alcohol consumption and g=0.27, CI: 0.13-0.41, Pless than0.001 for decrease of symptoms of depression, respectively]. Subgroup analyses revealed no significant differences for both AUD and MDD. However, digital interventions showed a higher effect size for depression than face-to-face interventions (g=0.73 and g=0.23, respectively, P=0.030). ConclusionsCombined cognitive-behavioural therapy and motivational interviewing for clinical or subclinical depressive and alcohol use disorders has a small but clinically significant effect in treatment outcomes compared with treatment as usual
Wet granulation in laboratory-scale high shear mixers: Effect of chopper presence, design and impeller speed
The effect of the main means of agitation in a high shear mixer has been investigated in this study. Granulation runs have been performed on a fine cohesive microcrystalline cellulose powder (Avicel 105, d50 = 20 μm) often used as a pharmaceutical excipient in tablet formulations in two bowls of a Mi-Pro® laboratory high shearmixer with a capacity of 0.9 and 1.9 L, respectively. Torque curves recorded during granulation are found to allow good control of the process while increasing impeller speed is found to generally reduce granule size and the onset of breakage seems to occur for similar values of impeller tip speed. As a general rule, the chopper allows for better binder distribution in the Mi-Pro® and is found to be necessary for successful granulation at low to moderate impeller speeds. For high impeller speeds in excess of 4.4 m/s with or without a chopper, similar granule sizes and growth mechanisms are observed. Granule roundness was found to increase with impeller speed up to a certain speed after which granule roundness has been found to decrease with increasing impeller speed most probably because of increased breakage of the granules. Dry granule strength has been found to increase with increasing impeller speed, presenting only a slight decrease at the highest impeller speed studied
Antibodies aggravate the development of ischemic heart failure
Heart-specific antibodies have been widely associated with myocardial infarction (MI). However, it remains unclear whether autoantibodies mediate disease progression or are a byproduct of cardiac injury. To disambiguate the role of immunoglobulins in MI, we characterized the development of ischemic heart failure in agammaglobulinemic mice (AID-/-μS-/-). Although these animals can produce functional B cells, they cannot synthesize secretory IgM (μS-/-) or perform Ig class switching (AID-/-), leading to complete antibody deficiency. Agammaglobulinemia did not affect overall post-MI survival but resulted in a significant reduction in infarct size. Echocardiographic analyses showed that, compared with wild-type infarcted control mice, AID-/-μS-/- mice exhibited improved cardiac function and reduced remodeling on day 56 post-MI. These differences remained significant even after animals with matched infarct sizes were compared. Infarcted AID-/-μS-/- mice also showed reduced myocardial expression levels of transcripts known to promote adverse remodeling, such as matrix metalloproteinase-9, collagen type I a1, collagen type III a1, and IL-6. An unbiased screening of the heart reactivity potential in the plasma of wild-type MI animals revealed the presence of antibodies that target the myocardial scar and collagenase-sensitive epitopes. Moreover, we found that IgG accumulated within the scar tissues of infarcted mice and remained in close proximity with cells expressing Fcγ receptors (CD16/32), suggesting the existence of an in situ IgG-Fcγ receptor axis. Collectively, our study results confirm that antibodies contribute to ischemic heart failure progression and provide novel insights into the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Our study sheds some light on the long-standing debate over the relevance of autoantibodies in heart failure and might stimulate future research in the field. The observation of extracellular matrix-specific antibodies and the detection of Fcγ receptor-expressing cells within the scar provide novel insights into the mechanisms by which antibodies may contribute to adverse remodeling.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
