Dynamic Radio Cooperation for Downlink Cloud-RANs with Computing Resource Sharing
A novel dynamic radio-cooperation strategy is proposed for Cloud Radio Access
Networks (C-RANs) consisting of multiple Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) connected to
a central Virtual Base Station (VBS) pool. In particular, the key capabilities
of C-RANs in computing-resource sharing and real-time communication among the
VBSs are leveraged to design a joint dynamic radio clustering and cooperative
beamforming scheme that maximizes the downlink weighted sum-rate system utility
(WSRSU). Due to the combinatorial nature of the radio clustering process and
the non-convexity of the cooperative beamforming design, the underlying
optimization problem is NP-hard, and is extremely difficult to solve for a
large network. Our approach aims for a suboptimal solution by transforming the
original problem into a Mixed-Integer Second-Order Cone Program (MI-SOCP),
which can be solved efficiently using a proposed iterative algorithm. Numerical
simulation results show that our low-complexity algorithm provides
close-to-optimal performance in terms of WSRSU while significantly
outperforming conventional radio clustering and beamforming schemes.
Additionally, the results also demonstrate the significant improvement in
computing-resource utilization of C-RANs over traditional RANs with distributed
computing resources.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted to IEEE MASS 201
Resource allocation for transmit hybrid beamforming in decoupled millimeter wave multiuser-MIMO downlink
This paper presents a study on joint radio resource allocation and hybrid precoding in multicarrier massive multiple-input multiple-output communications for 5G cellular networks. In this paper, we present the resource allocation algorithm to maximize the proportional fairness (PF) spectral efficiency under the per subchannel power and the beamforming rank constraints. Two heuristic algorithms are designed. The proportional fairness hybrid beamforming algorithm provides the transmit precoder with a proportional fair spectral efficiency among users for the desired number of radio-frequency (RF) chains. Then, we transform the number of RF chains or rank constrained optimization problem into convex semidefinite programming (SDP) problem, which can be solved by standard techniques. Inspired by the formulated convex SDP problem, a low-complexity, two-step, PF-relaxed optimization algorithm has been provided for the formulated convex optimization problem. Simulation results show that the proposed suboptimal solution to the relaxed optimization problem is near-optimal for the signal-to-noise ratio SNR <= 10 dB and has a performance gap not greater than 2.33 b/s/Hz within the SNR range 0-25 dB. It also outperforms the maximum throughput and PF-based hybrid beamforming schemes for sum spectral efficiency, individual spectral efficiency, and fairness index
Space Division Multiple Access with a Sum Feedback Rate Constraint
On a multi-antenna broadcast channel, simultaneous transmission to multiple
users by joint beamforming and scheduling is capable of achieving high
throughput, which grows double logarithmically with the number of users. The
sum rate for channel state information (CSI) feedback, however, increases
linearly with the number of users, reducing the effective uplink capacity. To
address this problem, a novel space division multiple access (SDMA) design is
proposed, where the sum feedback rate is upper-bounded by a constant. This
design consists of algorithms for CSI quantization, threshold based CSI
feedback, and joint beamforming and scheduling. The key feature of the proposed
approach is the use of feedback thresholds to select feedback users with large
channel gains and small CSI quantization errors such that the sum feedback rate
constraint is satisfied. Despite this constraint, the proposed SDMA design is
shown to achieve a sum capacity growth rate close to the optimal one. Moreover,
the feedback overflow probability for this design is found to decrease
exponentially with the difference between the allowable and the average sum
feedback rates. Numerical results show that the proposed SDMA design is capable
of attaining higher sum capacities than existing ones, even though the sum
feedback rate is bounded.Comment: 29 pages; submitted to IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin
