    Wavelet transform - artificial neural network receiver with adaptive equalisation for a diffuse indoor optical wireless OOK link

    This paper presents an alternative approach for signal detection and equalization using the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and the artificial neural network (ANN) in diffuse indoor optical wireless links (OWL). The wavelet analysis is used for signal preprocessing (feature extraction) and the ANN for signal detection. Traditional receiver architectures based on matched filter (MF) experience significant performance degradation in the presence of artificial light interference (ALI) and multipath induced intersymbol interference (ISI). The proposed receiver structure reduces the effect of ALI and ISI by selecting a particular scale of CWT that corresponds to the desired signal and classifying the signal into binary 1 and 0 based on an observation vector. By selecting particular scales corresponding to the signal, the effect of ALI is reduced. We show that there is little variation when using 30 and 5 neurons in the first layer, with one layer ANN model showing a consistently worse BER performance than other models, whilst the 15 neuron model show some behaviour anomalies from a BER of approximately 10-3. The simulation results show that the Wavelet-ANN architecture outperforms the traditional MF based receiver even with the filter is matched to the ISI affected pulse shape. The Wavelet-ANN receiver is also capable of providing a bit error rate (BER) performance comparable to the equalized forms of traditional receiver structure

    An Indoor Navigation System Using a Sensor Fusion Scheme on Android Platform

    With the development of wireless communication networks, smart phones have become a necessity for people’s daily lives, and they meet not only the needs of basic functions for users such as sending a message or making a phone call, but also the users’ demands for entertainment, surfing the Internet and socializing. Navigation functions have been commonly utilized, however the navigation function is often based on GPS (Global Positioning System) in outdoor environments, whereas a number of applications need to navigate indoors. This paper presents a system to achieve high accurate indoor navigation based on Android platform. To do this, we design a sensor fusion scheme for our system. We divide the system into three main modules: distance measurement module, orientation detection module and position update module. We use an efficient way to estimate the stride length and use step sensor to count steps in distance measurement module. For orientation detection module, in order to get the optimal result of orientation, we then introduce Kalman filter to de-noise the data collected from different sensors. In the last module, we combine the data from the previous modules and calculate the current location. Results of experiments show that our system works well and has high accuracy in indoor situations

    Effective denoising and adaptive equalization of indoor optical wireless channel with artificial light using the discrete wavelet transform and artificial neural network

    Indoor diffuse optical wireless (OW) communication systems performance is limited due to a number of effects; interference from natural and artificial light sources and multipath induced intersymbol interference (ISI). Artificial light interference (ALI) is a periodic signal with a spectrum profile extending up to the MHz range. It is the dominant source of performance degradation at low data rates, which can be removed using a high-pass filter (HPF). On the other hand, ISI is more severe at high data rates and an equalizing filter is incorporated at the receiver to compensate for the ISI. This paper provides the simulation results for a discrete wavelet transform (DWT)—artificial neural network (ANN)-based receiver architecture for on-and-off keying (OOK) non-return-to-zero (NRZ) scheme for a diffuse indoor OW link in the presence of ALI and ISI. ANN is adopted for classification acting as an efficient equalizer compared to the traditional equalizers. The ALI is effectively reduced by proper selection of the DWT coefficients resulting in improved receiver performance compared to the digital HPF. The simulated bit error rate (BER) performance of proposed DWT-ANN receiver structure for a diffuse indoor OW link operating at a data range of 10-200 Mbps is presented and discussed. The results are compared with performance of a diffuse link with an HPF-equalizer, ALI with/without filtering, and a line-of-sight (LOS) without filtering. We show that the DWT-ANN display a lower power requirement when compared to the receiver with an HPF-equalizer over a full range of delay spread in presence of ALI. However, as expected compared to the ideal LOS link the power penalty is higher reaching to 6 dB at 200 Mbps data rate

    Artificial neural network (ANN) has application in communication engineering in diverse areas such as channel equalization, channel modeling, error control code because of its capability of nonlinear processing, adaptability, and parallel processing. On the other hand, wavelet transform (WT) with both the time and the frequency resolution provides the exact representation of signal in both domains. Applying these signal processing tools for channel compensation and noise reduction can provide an enhanced performance compared to the traditional tools. In this paper, the slot error rate (SER) performance of digital pulse interval modulation (DPIM) in diffuse indoor optical wireless (OW) links subjected to the artificial light interference (ALI) is reported with new receiver structure based on the discrete WT (DWT) and ANN.     Development of personal area network (PAN) for mobile robot using bluetooth transceiver

    The work presents the concept of providing a Personal Area Network (PAN) for microcontroller based mobile robots using Bluetooth transceiver. With the concept of replacing cable, low cost, low power consumption and communication range between 10m to 100m, Bluetooth is suitable for communication between mobile robots since most mobile robots are powered by batteries and have high mobility. The network aimed to support real-time control of up to two mobile robots from a master mobile robot through communication using Bluetooth transceiver. If a fast network radio link is implemented, a whole new world of possibilities is opened in the research of robotics control and Artificial Intelligence (AI) research works, sending real time image and information. Robots could communicate through obstacles or even through walls. Bluetooth Ad Hoc topology provides a simple communication between devices in close by forming PAN. A system contained of both hardware and software is designed to enable the robots to form a PAN and communicating, sharing information. Three microcontroller based mobile robots are built for this research work. Bluetooth Protocol Stack and mobile robot control architecture is implemented on a single microcontroller chip. The PAN enabled a few mobile robots to communicate with each other to complete a given task. The wireless communication between mobile robots is reliable based from the result of experiments carried out. Thus this is a platform for multi mobile robots system and Ad Hoc networking system. Results from experiments show that microcontroller based mobile robots can easily form a Bluetooth PAN and communicate with each other

    High speed short range optical wireless ground-to-train communications

    There is a huge demand for seamless high-speed communications in fast moving trains. People want broadband services while on board as in their home or in the workplace. This demand drives the motivation for a high speed dedicated optical wireless link. Here we propose a free space optical ground-to-train communications system which consists of optical transceivers placed on the train and along the railway track. A mathematical model for three different scenarios when the train is moving has been developed. The optical link analysis, results as well as a simple proof of concept are also presented
