Localised and nonlocalised structures in nonlinear lattices with fermions
We discuss the quasiclassical approximation for the equations of motions of a
nonlinear chain of phonons and electrons having phonon mediated hopping.
Describing the phonons and electrons as even and odd grassmannian functions and
using the continuum limit we show that the equations of motions lead to a
Zakharov-like system for bosonic and fermionic fields. Localised and
nonlocalised solutions are discussed using the Hirota bilinear formalism.
Nonlocalised solutions turn out to appear naturally for any choice of wave
parameters. The bosonic localised solution has a fermionic dressing while the
fermionic one is an oscillatory localised field. They appear only if some
constraints on the dispersion are imposed. In this case the density of fermions
is a strongly localised travelling wave. Also it is shown that in the multiple
scales approach the emergent equation is linear. Only for the resonant case we
get a nonlinear fermionic Yajima-Oikawa system. Physical implications are
discussed.Comment: 7 pages, LaTeX, no figures. to appear in Europhysics Latter
Bioinspired auditory sound localisation for improving the signal to noise ratio of socially interactive robots
In this paper we describe a bioinspired hybrid architecture for acoustic sound source localisation and tracking to increase the signal to noise ratio (SNR) between speaker and background sources for a socially interactive robot's speech recogniser system. The model presented incorporates the use of Interaural Time Differ- ence for azimuth estimation and Recurrent Neural Net- works for trajectory prediction. The results are then pre- sented showing the difference in the SNR of a localised and non-localised speaker source, in addition to presenting the recognition rates between a localised and non-localised speaker source. From the results presented in this paper it can be seen that by orientating towards the sound source of interest the recognition rates of that source can be in- creased
The influence of heterogenous porosity on silicon nitride/steel wear in lubricated rolling contact
Heterogeneous porosity is detected on the surface and subsurface of hot isostatically pressed (HIPed) silicon nitride spherical rolling elements. The extent of the localised porosity accounts for an area of 6% of the rolling element surface and 4% of the material volume. An experimental investigation using a rotary tribometer is described to compare the lubricated rolling wear mechanisms and performance of HIPed silicon nitride with heterogeneous porosity defect in contact with steel. A brief review of previous investigations is presented. Localised porosity detection using white and violet light microscopy with post-test evaluation is described. Discussions, micro-hardness measurements and scanning electron microscopy illustrations are presented. Critical localised porosity size is evaluated from experimental results
Enhanced shot noise in resonant tunnelling via interacting localised states
In a variety of mesoscopic systems shot noise is seen to be suppressed in
comparison with its Poisson value. In this work we observe a considerable
enhancement of shot noise in the case of resonant tunnelling via localised
states. We present a model of correlated transport through two localised states
which provides both a qualitative and quantitative description of this effect.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Connexin communication compartments and wound repair in epithelial tissue
Epithelial tissues line the lumen of tracts and ducts connecting to the external environment. They are critical in forming an interface between the internal and external environment and, following assault from environmental factors and pathogens, they must rapidly repair to maintain cellular homeostasis. These tissue networks, that range from a single cell layer, such as in airway epithelium, to highly stratified and differentiated epithelial surfaces, such as the epidermis, are held together by a junctional nexus of proteins including adherens, tight and gap junctions, often forming unique and localised communication compartments activated for localised tissue repair. This review focuses on the dynamic changes that occur in connexins, the constituent proteins of the intercellular gap junction channel, during wound-healing processes and in localised inflammation, with an emphasis on the lung and skin. Current developments in targeting connexins as corrective therapies to improve wound closure and resolve localised inflammation are also discussed. Finally, we consider the emergence of the zebrafish as a concerted whole-animal model to study, visualise and track the events of wound repair and regeneration in real-time living model systems
Domain walls inside localised orientifolds
The equations of motion of toroidal orientifold compactifications with fluxes
are in one-to-one correspondence with gauged supergravity if the orientifold
(and D-brane) sources are smeared over the compact space. This smeared limit is
identical to the approximation that ignores warping. It is therefore relevant
to compare quantities obtained from the gauged supergravity with the true 10d
solution with localised sources. In this paper we find the correspondence
between BPS domain walls in gauged SUGRA and 10D SUGRA with localised sources.
Our model is the simplest orientifold with fluxes we are aware of: an O6/D6
compactification on T^3/Z_2 in massive IIA with H_3-flux. The BPS domain walls
correspond to a O6/D6/NS5/D8 bound state. Our analysis reveals that the domain
wall energy computed in gauged SUGRA is unaffected by the localisation of the
O6/D6 sources.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figur
Radiationless travelling waves in saturable nonlinear Schrödinger lattices
The longstanding problem of moving discrete breathers (intrinsic localised modes) in nonlinear Schrödinger lattices is revisited. The context is photorefractive crystal lattices with saturable nonlinearity whose generalised Peierls-Nabarro barrier vanishes for isolated coupling strength values. Genuinely localised travelling waves (i.e., moving discrete breathers) are computed as a function of the system parameters for the first time. The relevant solutions exist only for finite velocities
