Neural Empathic Response in Drug-Addicted Mothers.
Several studies showed that a history of substance abuse can compromise mothers’ competences of caring for their children (i.e., parenting). Indeed, it has been shown that neural circuits associated with parental behavior overlap with circuitry involved in addiction; in this vein, substance abuse may subtract neural resources for parenting. According to the neurocognitive model, empathy is the ability of sharing and understanding others’ emotional states. At a neural level, these two aspects result to be dissociable at an either functional and temporal level. Empathy is a fundamental element of parental abilities as it allows to response properly to children’s needs. Empathy deficits might explain the failure reported by drug addicted mothers in caring for their children. In the present study, we monitored event-related potentials (ERPs) during a pain decision task, which is classically used to activate an empathic response, with the aim to track the time-course of neural activity of mothers with (i.e., clinical) and without history of drug addiction (i.e., control group). Stimuli were pictures of adults’ and children’s hand depicted with a harmful tool either hurting the hand or placed nearby. At a behavioral level, drug addicted mothers showed a reduced reactivity to pain when compared to the control group. This difference has been corroborated at a neural level by ERPs results, starting from an early time-window. The neural reaction to pain in the control group correlated with some self-report scales of empathy, reinforcing the idea that the clinical group might report a lack of empathy when compared to a control group. These results are discussed in light of the two components of empathy proposed by the neurocognitive model

Introduction to the 28th International Conference on Logic Programming Special Issue
We are proud to introduce this special issue of the Journal of Theory and
Practice of Logic Programming (TPLP), dedicated to the full papers accepted for
the 28th International Conference on Logic Programming (ICLP). The ICLP
meetings started in Marseille in 1982 and since then constitute the main venue
for presenting and discussing work in the area of logic programming
Merrimack Valley Elder Partners
As stated in the thesis project, "My project was to generate a series of issues forums for people over 60 in the Merrimack Valley. The mission of the group I worked with, Elder Partners of the Merrimack Valley, is to "organize and empower elders in the Merrimack Valley so that they can advocate for themselves to improve services and conditions". The process was to survey various elder providers (housing authorities, family service agencies, visiting nurse associations, Councils on Aging) to get a sense of what the elder network feels are important issues. The group then held a series of "community speak-outs" with elders throughout the Merrimack Valley. These were held in elder housings using peer facilitators. Issues generated from these two sources shaped the focus of the legislative forums. The first forum held was with state representatives, the next with national representative and a third with state representatives again (in a different district of the valley). The focus of these events was to gather together elder constituents with change makers. The underlying purpose of the project continues to be to create informed, empowered and organized advocates. My role in these activities has been to work as facilitator of the planning meetings, and provide administrative resources." (Library-derived description)Mansfield, J. H. (1995). Complex Politics: A Quantitative Semantic and Topological Analysis of UK House of Commons Debates
This study is a first, exploratory attempt to use quantitative semantics
techniques and topological analysis to analyze systemic patterns arising in a
complex political system. In particular, we use a rich data set covering all
speeches and debates in the UK House of Commons between 1975 and 2014. By the
use of dynamic topic modeling (DTM) and topological data analysis (TDA) we show
that both members and parties feature specific roles within the system,
consistent over time, and extract global patterns indicating levels of
political cohesion. Our results provide a wide array of novel hypotheses about
the complex dynamics of political systems, with valuable policy applications
The Models of Village Fund’s Management at Wukirsari, Imogiri, Bantul, Yogyakarta
Health + Efficiency House: A Take on the 50x50 Glass House
Under the guidance of Professor Edmond Saliklis and Professor Meredith Sattler, four Architectural Engineering students joined forces with three Architecture students from both Cal Poly and Vilnius Technical University in Lithuania. The portfolio exemplifies a complete reimagination of Mies van der Rohe and Myron Goldsmith\u27s 50x50 Glass House as if it were designed today in Palm Springs, CA. The work completed in this interdisciplinary studio includes historical context, abstract creation, architectural and structural design all relating back to the Glass House
