    Effect of contact ratio on spur gear dynamic load

    A computer simulation is presented which shows how the gear contact ratio affects the dynamic load on a spur gear transmission. The contact ratio can be affected by the tooth addendum, the pressure angle, the tooth size (diametral pitch), and the center distance. The analysis presented was performed using the NASA gear dynamics code, DANST. In the analysis, the contact ratio was varied over the range 1.20 to 2.40 by changing the length of the tooth addendum. In order to simplify the analysis, other parameters related to contact ratio were held constant. The contact ratio was found to have a significant influence on gear dynamics. Over a wide range of operating speeds, a contact ratio close to 2.0 minimized dynamic load. For low contact ratio gears (contact ratio less than 2.0), increasing the contact ratio reduced the gear dynamic load. For high contact ratio gears (contact ratio = or greater than 2.0), the selection of contact ratio should take into consideration the intended operating speeds. In general, high contact ratio gears minimized dynamic load better than low contact ratio gears

    Influence of linear profile modification and loading conditions on the dynamic tooth load and stress of high contact ratio gears

    A computer simulation for the dynamic response of high-contact-ratio spur gear transmissions is presented. High contact ratio gears have the potential to produce lower dynamic tooth loads and minimum root stress but they can be sensitive to tooth profile errors. The analysis presented examines various profile modifications under realistic loading conditions. The effect of these modifications on the dynamic load (force) between mating gear teeth and the dynamic root stress is presented. Since the contact stress is dependent on the dynamic load, minimizing dynamic loads will also minimize contact stresses. It is shown that the combination of profile modification and the applied load (torque) carried by a gear system has a significant influence on gear dynamics. The ideal modification at one value of applied load will not be the best solution for a different load. High-contact-ratio gears were found to require less modification than standard low-contact-ratio gears. High-contact-ratio gears are more adversely affected by excess modification than by under modification. In addition, the optimal profile modification required to minimize the dynamic load (hence the contact stress) on a gear tooth differs from the optimal modification required to minimize the dynamic root (bending) stress. Computer simulation can help find the design tradeoffs to determine the best profile modification to satisfy the conflicting constraints of minimizing both the load and root stress in gears which must operate over a range of applied loads

    Hydrodynamic lubrication of rigid nonconformal contacts in combined rolling and normal motion

    A numerical solution to the problem of hydrodynamic lubrication of rigid point contacts with an isoviscous, incompressible lubricant was obtained. The hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity under unsteady (or dynamic) conditions arising from the combined effects of squeeze motion superposed upon the entraining motion was determined for both normal approach and separation. Superposed normal motion considerably increases net load-carrying capacity during normal approach and substantially reduces net load-carrying capacity during separation. Geometry was also found to have a significant influence on the dynamic load-carrying capacity. The ratio of dynamic to steady state load-carrying capacity increases with increasing geometry parameter for normal approach and decreases during separation. The cavitation (film rupture) boundary is also influenced significantly by the normal motion, moving downstream during approach and upstream during separation. For sufficiently high normal separation velocity the rupture boundary may even move upstream of the minimum-film-thickness position.     Simplified fatigue life analysis for traction drive contacts

    A simplified fatigue life analysis for traction drive contacts of arbitrary geometry is presented. The analysis is based on the Lundberg-Palmgren theory used for rolling-element bearings. The effects of torque, element size, speed, contact ellipse ratio, and the influence of traction coefficient are shown. The analysis shows that within the limits of the available traction coefficient, traction contacts exhibit longest life at high speeds. Multiple, load-sharing roller arrangements have an advantageous effect on system life, torque capacity, power-to-weight ratio and size

    A parametric study on the buckling of functionally graded material plates with internal discontinuities using the partition of unity method

    In this paper, the effect of local defects, viz., cracks and cutouts on the buckling behaviour of functionally graded material plates subjected to mechanical and thermal load is numerically studied. The internal discontinuities, viz., cracks and cutouts are represented independent of the mesh within the framework of the extended finite element method and an enriched shear flexible 4-noded quadrilateral element is used for the spatial discretization. The properties are assumed to vary only in the thickness direction and the effective properties are estimated using the Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. The plate kinematics is based on the first order shear deformation theory. The influence of various parameters, viz., the crack length and its location, the cutout radius and its position, the plate aspect ratio and the plate thickness on the critical buckling load is studied. The effect of various boundary conditions is also studied. The numerical results obtained reveal that the critical buckling load decreases with increase in the crack length, the cutout radius and the material gradient index.     Fire resistance of steel beam to square CFST column composite joints using RC slabs: Experiments and numerical studies

    In this paper, experimental investigation and numerical simulation of steel beam to square concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) column composite joints that use reinforced concrete (RC) slabs subjected to localized and global fire conditions are presented. Eight joints were tested under the ISO 834 fire standard, and the effect of different parameters including the load ratio of beams, the beam-to-column ratio of linear stiffness, and different fire scenarios was studied during testing. The failure patterns and the thermal responses of the structural members including the temperature distribution, axial displacement of columns, vertical deflection of the beam ends, and fire resistance of the joints were recorded and discussed. The results show that tube buckling of the square CFST columns, flange buckling of the steel beams, and separation between the top flange of the steel beams and the RC slabs were the primary failure patterns of this type of joint. Moreover, the temperatures of structural members within the connection zone were lower than those in the other regions. Compared with other factors, the load ratio of the beams demonstrated a significant influence on the displacement of the structural members and the fire resistance of the joints. A three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) model was built to simulate the fire performance of this type of composite joint. The simulation results were compared to the test results in terms of failure patterns, temperature distributions, displacements, and fire resistances, and good agreement in general was achieved. Finally, the FEA model was adopted to examine the effect of parameters on the fire resistance of the composite joints with axial and flexural constraints applied at the ends of the beam

    Fatigue crack growth under constant amplitude loading for a particular material strongly depends on load ratio (R). The prediction of fatigue crack growth life under such situation through deterministic approach is a tedious task. Application of artificial intelligence methods is more encouraging in those complex situations. In the present work a novel soft-computing approach i.e. adaptive neuro-fuzzy technique (ANFIS) has been applied to predict fatigue life of 6061 (AA 6061) aluminum alloy under the influence of load ratio. It has been observed that the ANFIS model predict the fatigue life of the alloy reasonably well with percentage deviation of ndash;0.024 and prediction ratio of 1.025

    Fire resistance tests on concrete columns

    The reinforced concrete elements are known to have enhanced fire behaviour however there are many things that can affect that performance. In the last years there have been carried out, in the University of Coimbra, Portugal, dozens of fire resistance tests on concrete columns where it was tested the influence of various parameters on the behaviour of these columns. Several parameters that might have influence on the behaviour of concrete columns in fire, were tested: cross section shape (round and square), longitudinal reinforcement ratio, slenderness of the column, stiffness of the surrounding structure (restraint level), load level and the load eccentricity. The restraining level to the thermal elongation of the columns showed not being a relevant parameter in their fire resistance probably due the increase in rotational restrain associated with the increase in the axial restraint. The first increases the fire resistance while the second reduces. The increasing of the load level lead to a reduction, while the increasing of the longitudinal reinforcement ratio or the decreasing of the slenderness of the columns lead to an increasing of the fire resistance. The spalling was also an aspect analysed in these tests. The higher load levels, the shape of the cross-section, the type of concrete with or without steel and / or polypropylene fibres, and the steel reinforcement ration was parameters that showed to have influence on concrete cracking and spalling

    Vertical facing panel-joint gap analysis for steel-seinforced soil walls

    This paper reports the results of a numerical parametric study focused on the prediction of vertical load distribution and vertical gap compression between precast concrete facing panel units in steel-reinforced soil walls ranging in height from 6 to 24 m. The vertical compression was accommodated by polymeric bearing pads placed at the horizontal joints between panels during construction. This paper demonstrates how gap compression and magnitude of vertical load transmitted between horizontal joints are influenced by joint location along the height of the wall, joint compressibility, and backfill and foundation soil stiffness. The summary plots in this study can be used to estimate the number and type (stiffness) of the bearing pads to ensure a target minimum gap thickness at the end of construction, to demonstrate the relative influence of wall height and different material component properties on vertical load levels and gap compression, or as a benchmark to test numerical models used for project-specific design. The paper also demonstrates that although the load factor (ratio of vertical load at a horizontal joint to weight of panels above the joint) and joint compression are relatively insensitive to foundation stiffness, the total settlement at the top of the wall facing is very sensitive to foundation stiffness. This paper examines the quantitative consequences of using a simple linear compressive stress–strain model for the bearing pads versus amultilinear model that is better able to capture the response of bearing pads taken to greater compression. The study demonstrates that qualitative trends in vertical load factor are preserved when a more advanced stress-dependent stiffness soil hardening model is used for the backfill soil as compared with the simpler linear elastic Mohr–Coulomb model. Although there were differences in vertical loads and gap compressionwith the use of both soilmodels for the backfill, the differenceswere small and not of practical concern.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
