Overview: Individual and organizational perspectives on emotion management and display
As reported in Volume 1 of Research on Emotions in Organizations (Ashkanasy, Zerbe, & Härtel, 2005), the chapters in this volume are drawn from the best contributions to the 2004 International Conference on Emotion and Organizational Life held at Birkbeck College, London, complemented by additional, invited chapters. (This biannual conference has come to be known as the “Emonet” conference, after the listserv of members.) Previous edited volumes (Ashkanasy, Härtel, & Zerbe, 2000; Ashkanasy, Zerbe, & Härtel, 2002; Härtel, Zerbe, & Ashkanasy, 2004) were published every two years following the Emonet conference. With the birth of this annual Elsevier series came the opportunity for greater focus in the theme of each volume, and for greater scope for invited contributions. This volume contains eight chapters selected from conference contributions for their quality, interest, and appropriateness to the theme of this volume, as well as four invited chapters. We again acknowledge in particular the assistance of the conference paper reviewers (see the appendix). In the year of publication of this volume the 2006 Emonet conference will be held in Atlanta, USA and will be followed by Volumes 3 and 4 of Research on Emotions in Organizations. Eigenvector localization as a tool to study small communities in online social networks
We present and discuss a mathematical procedure for identification of small
"communities" or segments within large bipartite networks. The procedure is
based on spectral analysis of the matrix encoding network structure. The
principal tool here is localization of eigenvectors of the matrix, by means of
which the relevant network segments become visible. We exemplified our approach
by analyzing the data related to product reviewing on Amazon.com. We found
several segments, a kind of hybrid communities of densely interlinked reviewers
and products, which we were able to meaningfully interpret in terms of the type
and thematic categorization of reviewed items. The method provides a
complementary approach to other ways of community detection, typically aiming
at identification of large network modules

Enhancing Federal Agency Peer Review
Peer review, the process of reviewing a piece of scientific research for accuracy and reliability, is widely used in government. It serves an important function, allowing government agencies and other groups to assess the validity of research and identify any possible shortcomings. Unfortunately however, it is often not used effectively. This White Paper examines the use of peer review by federal agencies, with a particular focus on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It discusses the existing federal regulatory framework for peer review and recommends various changes thereto designed to improve the effectiveness of peer review.
The White Paper was written by J.D. student Ian Petersen, with support from the University of Texas Regulatory Oversight Group (UTROG). UTROG is an unofficial organization at the University of Texas. The evaluation of ontologies: Editorial review vs. democratic ranking
Increasingly, the high throughput technologies used by biomedical researchers are bringing about a situation in which large bodies of data are being described using controlled structured vocabularies—also known as ontologies—in order to support the integration and analysis of this data. Annotation of data by means of ontologies is already contributing in significant ways to the cumulation of scientific knowledge and, prospectively, to the applicability of cross-domain algorithmic reasoning in support of scientific advance. This very success, however, has led to a proliferation of ontologies of varying scope and quality. We define one strategy for achieving quality assurance of ontologies—a plan of action already adopted by a large community of collaborating ontologists—which consists in subjecting ontologies to a process of peer review analogous to that which is applied to scientific journal articles
Systematic reviews of health effects of social interventions: 1. Finding the evidence: how far should you go?
Study objective: There is little guidance on how to identify useful evidence about the health effects of social interventions. The aim of this study was to assess the value of different ways of finding this type of information.
Design: Retrospective analysis of the sources of studies for one systematic review.
Setting: Case study of a systematic review of the effectiveness of interventions in promoting a population shift from using cars towards walking and cycling.
Main results: Only four of the 69 relevant studies were found in a "first-line" health database such as Medline. About half of all relevant studies were found through the specialist Transport database. Nine relevant studies were found through purposive internet searches and seven relevant studies were found by chance. The unique contribution of experts was not to identify additional studies, but to provide more information about those already found in the literature.
Conclusions: Most of the evidence needed for this review was not found in studies indexed in familiar literature databases. Applying a sensitive search strategy across multiple databases and interfaces is very labour intensive. Retrospective analysis suggests that a more efficient method might have been to search a few key resources, then to ask authors and experts directly for the most robust reports of studies identified. However, internet publications and serendipitous discoveries did make a significant contribution to the total set of relevant evidence. Undertaking a comprehensive search may provide unique evidence and insights that would not be obtained using a more focused search
