Preferences, Choice, Goal Attainment, Satisfaction:That’s Life?
We make choices to achieve an objective. The objective is defined by an individual’s preferences. Subject to constraints, the objective is approached or achieved. Is this a good characterization of life? To answer this question we weaken one of the most basic assumptions of economics: individuals know their preferences. Instead we assume that an individual’s preferences are shaped and reshaped by his environment, experiences, expectations, and by exogenous events. In this model of individual self-discovery, preferences emerge, evolve, and change. These redefinitions change the future course of the individual’s life and reinterpret his past. Adaptation to climate extremes in developing countries : the role of education
Global climate models predict a rise in extreme weather in the next century. To better understand future interactions among adaptation costs, socioeconomic development, and climate change in developing countries, observed losses of life from floods and droughts during 1960-2003 are modeled using three determinants: weather events, income per capita, and female education. The analysis reveals countries with high female education weathered extreme weather events better than countries with equivalent income and weather conditions. In that case, one would expect resilience to increase with economic growth and improvements in education. The relationship between resilience in the face of extreme weather events and increases in female education expenditure holds when socioeconomic development continues but the climate does not change, and socioeconomic development continues with weather paths driven by"wet"and"dry"Global Climate Models. A Process Model of Locational Change in Entrepreneurial Firms: An Evolutionary Perspective
How do changes in the spatial organization of entrepreneurial firms come about? This paper provides a conceptualisation of the process of locational change. A process model of locational change is constructed on the basis of an empirical study of 109 locational events during the life course of 25 young firms in knowledge intensive sectors (knowledge services and biomedicals). This process model of locational change maps both internal and external variation and selection processes. Stability and Change of Personality across the Life Course: The Impact of Age and Major Life Events on Mean-Level and Rank-Order Stability of the Big Five
Does personality change across the entire life course, and are those changes due to intrinsic maturation or major life experiences? This longitudinal study investigated changes in the mean levels and rank order of the Big Five personality traits in a heterogeneous sample of 14,718 Germans across all of adulthood. Latent change and latent moderated regression models provided four main findings: First, age had a complex curvilinear influence on mean levels of personality. Second, the rank-order stability of Emotional Stability, Extraversion, Openness, and Agreeableness all followed an inverted U-shaped function, reaching a peak between the ages of 40 and 60, and decreasing afterwards, whereas Conscientiousness showed a continuously increasing rank-order stability across adulthood. Third, personality predicted the occurrence of several objective major life events (selection effects) and changed in reaction to experiencing these events (socialization effects), suggesting that personality can change due to factors other than intrinsic maturation.. - Fourth, when events were clustered according to their valence, as is commonly done,. - effects of the environment on changes in personality were either overlooked or. - overgeneralized. Climate Change and Dam Owner Liability in Rhode Island
Increasing precipitation associated with climate change is affecting dam operation and hazards in Rhode Island. Flooding caused by increased precipitation or extreme weather events can cause dam failure or upstream or downstream flooding, resulting in loss of life and property. These losses can result in liability, which may vary based on the dam owner and its purpose. This study assists dam owners and the public in understanding the potential liabilities that may arise as a result of flooding from extreme weather events. Section one provides a background of dam hazards in Rhode Island in the context of climate change. Section two introduces the statutory, common law, and constitutional claims that may be brought against a dam owner after a flood. Section three applies these potential liabilities to illustrate how they may apply to different types of dams and dam owners. Section four evaluates Rhode Island law in the context of state laws from the northeast region, focusing on the application of statutory liability, strict liability and negligence standards, and liability for drawdown
Accommodating repair actions into gas turbine prognostics
Elements of gas turbine degradation, such as compressor
fouling, are recoverable through maintenance actions like
compressor washing. These actions increase the usable engine
life and optimise the performance of the gas turbine.
However, these maintenance actions are performed by a separate
organization to those undertaking fleet management operations,
leading to significant uncertainty in the maintenance
state of the asset. The uncertainty surrounding maintenance
actions impacts prognostic efficacy. In this paper, we adopt
Bayesian on-line change point detection to detect the compressor
washing events. Then, the event detection information
is used as an input to a prognostic algorithm, advising an
update to the estimation of remaining useful life. To illustrate
the capability of the approach, we demonstrated our on-line
Bayesian change detection algorithms on synthetic and real
aircraft engine service data, in order to identify the compressor
washing events for a gas turbine and thus provide demonstrably
improved prognosis
Wildlife and Human Diseases: Symptoms of Endangered Marine Ecosystems & Climate Change
The Center for Health and the Global Environment, Harvard Medical School; Wildlife Trust; the Consortium for Conservation Medicine; and the Environmental and Energy Study Institute hosted a Congressional briefing entitled "Wildlife and Human Diseases: Symptoms of Endangered Marine Ecosystems and Climate Change." The marine coastal environment is being subjected to increased pressure from residential, recreational, and commercial development. The combined effects of spills, leaks and accidents associated with oil extraction and transport further weakens coastal ecosystems leaving them vulnerable to injury. These disturbances, in conjunction with new stresses posed by climate change, is adversely affecting the health of marine life. An increase in disease among marine species raises significant concern on the part of scientists, environmental researchers, and policymakers who believe such events herald heightened risk to wildlife and humans
Climate change and its risk reduction by mangrove ecosystem of Bangladesh
Climate change is amongst the most dreaded problems of the new
millennium. Bangladesh is a coastal country bounded by Bay of
Bengal on its southern part and here natural disasters are an
ongoing part of human life. This paper discusses about the possible
impact of climate change through tropical cyclones, storm surges,
coastal erosion and sea level rise in the coastal community of
Bangladesh and how they cope with these extreme events by the
help of mangrove ecosystem. Both qualitative and quantitative
