    Learning to Generate Facial Depth Maps

    In this paper, an adversarial architecture for facial depth map estimation from monocular intensity images is presented. By following an image-to-image approach, we combine the advantages of supervised learning and adversarial training, proposing a conditional Generative Adversarial Network that effectively learns to translate intensity face images into the corresponding depth maps. Two public datasets, namely Biwi database and Pandora dataset, are exploited to demonstrate that the proposed model generates high-quality synthetic depth images, both in terms of visual appearance and informative content. Furthermore, we show that the model is capable of predicting distinctive facial details by testing the generated depth maps through a deep model trained on authentic depth maps for the face verification task

    3D Face Reconstruction from Light Field Images: A Model-free Approach

    Reconstructing 3D facial geometry from a single RGB image has recently instigated wide research interest. However, it is still an ill-posed problem and most methods rely on prior models hence undermining the accuracy of the recovered 3D faces. In this paper, we exploit the Epipolar Plane Images (EPI) obtained from light field cameras and learn CNN models that recover horizontal and vertical 3D facial curves from the respective horizontal and vertical EPIs. Our 3D face reconstruction network (FaceLFnet) comprises a densely connected architecture to learn accurate 3D facial curves from low resolution EPIs. To train the proposed FaceLFnets from scratch, we synthesize photo-realistic light field images from 3D facial scans. The curve by curve 3D face estimation approach allows the networks to learn from only 14K images of 80 identities, which still comprises over 11 Million EPIs/curves. The estimated facial curves are merged into a single pointcloud to which a surface is fitted to get the final 3D face. Our method is model-free, requires only a few training samples to learn FaceLFnet and can reconstruct 3D faces with high accuracy from single light field images under varying poses, expressions and lighting conditions. Comparison on the BU-3DFE and BU-4DFE datasets show that our method reduces reconstruction errors by over 20% compared to recent state of the art

    Face Recognition from Sequential Sparse 3D Data via Deep Registration

    Previous works have shown that face recognition with high accurate 3D data is more reliable and insensitive to pose and illumination variations. Recently, low-cost and portable 3D acquisition techniques like ToF(Time of Flight) and DoE based structured light systems enable us to access 3D data easily, e.g., via a mobile phone. However, such devices only provide sparse(limited speckles in structured light system) and noisy 3D data which can not support face recognition directly. In this paper, we aim at achieving high-performance face recognition for devices equipped with such modules which is very meaningful in practice as such devices will be very popular. We propose a framework to perform face recognition by fusing a sequence of low-quality 3D data. As 3D data are sparse and noisy which can not be well handled by conventional methods like the ICP algorithm, we design a PointNet-like Deep Registration Network(DRNet) which works with ordered 3D point coordinates while preserving the ability of mining local structures via convolution. Meanwhile we develop a novel loss function to optimize our DRNet based on the quaternion expression which obviously outperforms other widely used functions. For face recognition, we design a deep convolutional network which takes the fused 3D depth-map as input based on AMSoftmax model. Experiments show that our DRNet can achieve rotation error 0.95{\deg} and translation error 0.28mm for registration. The face recognition on fused data also achieves rank-1 accuracy 99.2% , FAR-0.001 97.5% on Bosphorus dataset which is comparable with state-of-the-art high-quality data based recognition performance.Comment: To be appeared in ICB201

    Extreme 3D Face Reconstruction: Seeing Through Occlusions

    Existing single view, 3D face reconstruction methods can produce beautifully detailed 3D results, but typically only for near frontal, unobstructed viewpoints. We describe a system designed to provide detailed 3D reconstructions of faces viewed under extreme conditions, out of plane rotations, and occlusions. Motivated by the concept of bump mapping, we propose a layered approach which decouples estimation of a global shape from its mid-level details (e.g., wrinkles). We estimate a coarse 3D face shape which acts as a foundation and then separately layer this foundation with details represented by a bump map. We show how a deep convolutional encoder-decoder can be used to estimate such bump maps. We further show how this approach naturally extends to generate plausible details for occluded facial regions. We test our approach and its components extensively, quantitatively demonstrating the invariance of our estimated facial details. We further provide numerous qualitative examples showing that our method produces detailed 3D face shapes in viewing conditions where existing state of the art often break down.Comment: Accepted to CVPR'18.
